One of the main accused in the March 1993 serial bomb blast in Mumbai (Bombay), Hanif Kadawala, was killed on February 7. The police suspect that Chhota Rajan, a mafia leader, who is absconding, is the mastermind behind the killing. Rajan is also accused of killing four other persons believed to be involved in the blasts. Kadawala was, previously, arrested on April 16, 1993, under the erstwhile Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) for his alleged involvement in an arms smuggling charge. These weapons were reportedly used in the blasts. He was subsequently released on bail on October 14, 1998.

On February 10, Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council chairman and Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) chief Subhas Ghising was seriously injured in an ambush laid on his convoy by unidentified gunmen near Kurseong, Siliguri, West Bengal. Police also claimed to have recovered one AK-47 rifle, two magazines and a grenade from the ambush site. Gurkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) chief Subash Ghising, who was attacked on February 10, is out of danger and has appealed to the people to maintain peace. Meanwhile, arson and violence marred the start of an "indefinite hill-bandh" called on February 11 by the GNLF to protest the attack on Ghising. Police said the shutdown paralysed normal life across Darjeeling district. Observers see the attempt on the life of Subash Ghising as the culmination of a power struggle to lead the Nepali-speaking Gorkha race in West Bengal’s Darjeeling hills. So far, Ghising had been the undisputed leader of the Gorkhas in the region. Of late, a breakaway group of the GNLF, the Gorkhaland Liberation Organisation (GLO), led by former GNLF cadre Chhatra Subba, has been challenging the authority of the GNLF and Ghishing.
