Altaf Hussain, the chief of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Altaf (MQM-A), has been quoted in the Pakistani media as planning to seek appointments with Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He reportedly appealed to Indian Muslims to protest the injustice against the Mohajirs by the military regime in Pakistan. According to him, "Nothing is impossible... When I make a programme to have a meeting with Prime Minister Vajpayee... I will make it public and I will not do this secretly." While threatening to launch a "Mohajir Bahini", he added, "The people will not wait for whether I call for forming Mohajir Bahini or not. It is retribution. If the prevailing things do not change, atrocities on them are not stopped and they are denied their due rights, they can do this at any time." On the forthcoming Summit meeting between Gen. Musharraf and the Indian Premier, he said the Indian invitation to the Pakistani military ruler for talks was "a good step towards establishment of peace in the region .... And hopefully it will help resolve the Kashmir issue through negotiations."

On June 11, senior Delhi Police officials held high level meeting with the Lt-Governor and Home Ministry officials to assess the terrorist threat in the national capital particularly in view of General Musharraf's visit and the Afro-Asian games. Recent intelligence inputs had reportedly suggested that several terrorist outfits were trying to scuttle the new peace initiative by planning a series of attacks in Delhi. Reports even claimed that a team of trained terrorists is believed to be on their way to New Delhi. A senior police official, while talking to newsmen, said, "So far we only know that certain buildings, installations and people in Delhi may be targeted. But the how, who and when still remain to be answered.'' He also pointed out that there had been a distinct shift in the strategy adopted by the terrorists. While earlier they struck in the walled city area, it was high profile targets in New Delhi, which was being targeted now.
