On August 1, two more activists of the banned Muslim religious fundamentalist outfit, the Deendar Anjuman were arrested in Hyderabad for their alleged involvement in bomb explosions in Churches. They were produced before a metropolitan magistrate, who remanded them to judicial custody till August 14. Of the total 50 accused in the bomb explosions, 40 had been arrested. Seven of them have been identified as Pakistani nationals.

According to official sources, the Kanpur police registered cases of waging war and sedition against 12 activists of the Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) under section 121, 122, 123 and 124 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Besides, the police have reportedly sent a detailed report to the State government about SIMI’s links with terrorist outfits and their alleged anti-national activities. Speaking to newsmen in Kanpur, a senior police official said these persons were allegedly in violence and arson actively during the recent communal riots in the city. A senior police official said the woman, a resident of Bihar, was carrying the cartridges from Nagaland and was supposed to deliver it to a person in Kishenganj in Bihar. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has identified the Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Jammu and Srinagar airports as 'ultra hypersensitive' airports and Bangalore, Kolkota, Kochi, Coimbatore and Tiruvanathapuram as ‘sensitive airports’ in the wake of July 24 attack on the Colombo airport by rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which damaged nearly 14 aircraft. A circular to this effect has reportedly been sent to authorities of the concerned airports. The Union Cabinet, in its recent meeting, had decided to beef up the security at the vulnerable airports. Official sources said that the Security Guards (NSG) and Indo-Tibetan Border Force (ITBF) commandos have been deployed in the five ultra hypersensitive airports. Besides, armed patrolling have been introduced at the tarmac and apron areas of the Bangalore, Coimbatore, Kolkota, Kochi and Tiruvananthapuram airports, apart from the other airports.

According to a senior police official, the terrorists confessed during interrogation that they had planned to set off explosives at strategic locations in the capital and other parts of the State on the eve of Independence Day on August 15. The arrested terrorists have also confessed that they had masterminded a powerful bomb blast near Hanumangarhi temple in Ayodhya in May 2001. Quick reaction teams with sophisticated gadgets have also been deployed at sensitive areas. Besides, reports quoting official sources said a 50-member crack team of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has been deployed at the Mumbai airport to respond to any crisis arising out of terrorist attack.
