On January 1, unidentified gunmen shot dead four civilians and injured fourteen others in Lilong in Thoubal District of Manipur, reports The Hindu. As per reports, the armed miscreants came wearing Police uniforms in four vehicles and opened fire on people, adds India TodayNE. Lilong is a Meitei Pangal (Meitei Muslim)-dominated locality. This was the first incident of violence not involving tribal communities since ethnic clashes broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023. Soon after the killings, the local authorities reimposed curfew in Thoubal and the adjoining Imphal East and Imphal West Districts. The relaxation of curfew in two other Imphal Valley districts – Kakching and Bishnupur – was shortened.

On January 7, Kuki militants attacked security forces (SFs), particularly Manipur Police personnel using sophisticated weapons including bombs in Moreh in Tengnoupal District of Manipur, reports The Sangai Express. The attack came after Kuki militants warned and asked the Kuki civilians to vacate the Moreh town before January 7. State security personnel retaliated resulting in heavy exchange of firing between the two sides. Moreh than 30 bombs, rocket-propelled grenade (RPGs) and Lathod bombs were fired by the Kuki militants toward the security personnel. No casualties were reported.

On January 10, four militants belonging to combined forces of Arambai Tengol and Valley Based Insurgent Groups (VBIGs) were killed in a gunfight with Kuki-Zo village volunteers at Haotak Phailen Village in Churachandpur District of Manipur, reports India TodayNE. The gunfight resulted from some illegal cutting of firewood in the forest by the insurgents. The village volunteers on receiving reports of illegal activity in the forest acted swiftly to disperse them, resulting in the killing of four militants. On January 10, four civilians identified as Oinam Romen Meitei (45), Ahanthem Dara Meitei (56), Thoudam Ibomcha Meitei (53) and Thoudam Anand Meitei (27) were killed by Kuki militants at Haotak Phailen village in Churachandpur District of Manipur, reports India TodayNE. All four belong to Meitei community and were from Tampha Khunou Village in Bishnupur District, adjacent to Haotak Phailen. Locals in the Tampha Khunou claim that the four dead were innocent civilians who had gone to harvest ginger near the area where they were killed. SATP earlier citing India TodayNE report had reported that the killed persons were militants.

Reports said that the body was recovered after a viral video surfaced on social media on January 30, revealing a brutal killing of a person by slitting the throat with a knife by Kuki militants.
