In a joint raid by Military Intelligence (Southern Command) and Karnataka Anti-Terrorist Cell (ATC) on June 7, three people, identified as Gautam Viswanathan and Ibrahim Mullati, were arrested from BTM Layout in Bangalore, the identity of the third arrestee, a hawala (illegal money transaction) operator from Bhatkal, has not yet revealed, reports Deccan Herald. In April, 2021, Army officials were perturbed by a series of phone calls to their helplines in Siliguri, West Bengal, with unknown callers trying to inquire about army units and movements. Within weeks, the Army had traced the suspicious calls to a location in Bangalore. An investigation by Military Intelligence (Southern Command) in the city dredged up information that certain persons were exploiting the telecom system to carry out illegal activities. Sources say the suspects used telecom boxes and SIM cards to rout calls from terrorist groups.

A high-intensity explosion occurred in a madrasa (seminary) in Bihar’s Banka District on June 8, morning, killing an imam (religious teacher), Mohammad Abdul Sattar Mobin, and damaging other houses in the locality, reports Hindustan Times. According to Superintendent of Police (Banka) Arvind Kumar Gupta, the blast took place around 8am at the complex situated in Navtolia locality, pulling down a major portion of the seminary. “The compound’s front portion comprises the madrasa. It was locked from outside. There is a pathway inside which leads to the mosque, the gates of which were found open. The explosion has caused extensive damage to the seminary building,” Gupta told. A preliminary probe suggested the presence of gunpowder or explosives at the site of the explosion, said Shresthan Kumar, Assistant Director of the Forensic Sciences Laboratory at Bhagalpur. Mobin’s body was recovered just outside Navtolia locality. Preliminary investigations revealed that the injured imam died on the way to the hospital, following which his aides abandoned the body in the car and fled, said Police.

On June 10, Bangalore City Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said another two more accused, were arrested in the illegal phone exchange racket case, reports thenewsminute.com. These two helped another arrested accused Ibrahim Pullati to obtain hundreds of SIM cards using the fingerprints of innocent people. "The duo used to obtain SIM cards using multiple fingerprints of those regular customers who used to go to them to get new phone connections," Pant said. Speaking about Ibrahim, the city police chief said he had worked in Dubai as a driver and returned from there to set up the telephone exchange in Bengaluru using Voice Over Internet Protocol. Most of the calls originated from the Middle East and a few people there helped Ibrahim in making calls, the officer explained. He added that the payment for the calls used to happen in Dubai and it was routed to India through a money-laundering network.

The Union Government has reportedly taken a stand against bringing back the four women, Nimisha alias Fathima Isa, 31; Merin Jacob P. alias Mariyam, 28; Sonia Sebastian alias Ayesha, 33; and Rafala Ijas, 30 residents of Kasargod District in Kerala, who went to Afghanistan along with their husbands, who joined Islamic State (IS), India Today reports on June 14. The four women and their children had surrendered to Afghan forces in December 2019 after their husbands died in fighting. At present they are lodged in Kabul’s Pul-e-Charkhi prison for the past 17 months. The government believes Indian nationals who joined the IS are highly radicalised and their return could pose a security threat. The ‘decision’ has sealed the fate of Indian nationals who had moved to Afghanistan between 2016 and 2018, along with their families.

According to the DisInfo Lab report, the United States-based Pakistan-linked charity organisations started collecting funds in name of helping India in this pandemic time but sent only a small amount in the name of help to India, india.com reports on June 16. Calling it ‘Covid-19 Scam 2021’, the report said the donated millions of dollars are likely to be used for fomenting protests and sponsoring outright terror attacks. The report also called it one of the worst scams in human history in terms of the humanitarian cost as millions of dollars were stolen in the name of ‘Helping India Breath’. Notably, the DisInfo Lab exposed a number of charity organisations which managed to raise funds by exploiting India’s hard-earned goodwill. One such organisation which claimed to have worked for India is the Islamic Medical Association of North America (IMANA). The present chairman of IMANA is Dr Ismail Mehr who has been leading the “Help India Breathe” project. He is a Pakistan-origin doctor and currently based in the US, according to the report. The report suggested that these organisations have close ties with radical Islamists and terrorists’ organizations and being run in cahoots with the Pakistan army. “Funds worth tens of crores donated by well-meaning people world over to help India in crisis – has been stolen. There is no accountability and in the present globalised world, no mechanism to ensure any accountability,” said the report. Unlike several other organizations, IMANA was rather opaque in its recent charity drive during the Covid crisis and has provided “scanty details” about the manner it has spent crores of funds it has collected.

National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court in Mumbai, Maharashtra on June 15, convicted and sentenced three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists, identified as Mohammad Muzammil, Mohammad Sadiq and Mohammad Akram alias Imran Khan alias Khaled to 10 rigorous imprisonment under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in the Nanded LeT case, reports New Indian Express. The court has awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment to Muzammil under the UAPA and five years under the Arms Act with a fine of INR 5,000, while the other two have been sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment under the UAPA. The case was initially registered at the ATS Kalachowki, Mumbai, on August 31, 2012 under the Arms Act relating to the arrest of accused persons and recovery of firearms, the NIA has stated. “Initial investigation had revealed that the accused were members of the banned terrorist organisations Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami (HuJI). Accordingly, Sections of UAPA Act were invoked in the case. The NIA had re-registered the case on June 24, 2013 and taken over the investigation,” the agency added.
