The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on November 11 announced that it would deliver the verdict in a war crimes case against Satkhira District Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI)’s former Amir (Chief) and ex-lawmaker Mohamad Abdul Khalek Mondal (72) any day, reports New Age. The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Mohamad Shahinur Islam, announced the schedule on completion of the case summing up arguments from both the prosecution and the defence lawyers. Placing her rebuttal after the defence lawyers’ case summing up arguments, prosecutor Rezia Sultana Chamon demanded capital punishment for Khalek and other accused in the case Khan Rokunuzzaman (64), claiming that they could prove all six charges against the duo beyond doubt. She argued that the witnesses identified the accused as offenders and the duo, being active members of Islami Chhatra Sangha, the then student wing of JeI, joined Razakar force during the Liberation War. On March 5, 2018, the tribunal charged four suspects — Khalek, Rokunuzzanan, M Abdullah-Al-Baki and Zahirul Islam, for killing six people, torturing 14 people and raping two women in Satkhira. Khalek was in the dock while Rokunuzzanan was facing the trial in absentia. The tribunal dropped the names of Baki and Zahirul from the trial process as they died.

The Supreme Court (SC) on November 23 upheld the death penalty of Salauddin Salehin, a dreaded militant from the banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), who was convicted in the killing of Goni Gomez of Jamalpur in 2004, reports Dhaka Tribune. A five-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order after hearing a petition while Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath represented the state. In 2004, Goni Gomez, owner of a pharmacy, was killed by the JMB militants for converting to Christianity from Islam. In 2006, Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced Salehin and Rakib to death in the case and later the High Court (HC) upheld the sentence rejecting their appeal. Rejected by the HC, the two appealed the death sentence before the SC. The court did not consider the appeal of Rakib, another death-row convict in the case, as he was killed in a gunfight with police in 2015. Salehin has been a fugitive since 2015 when JMB militants abducted him from a prison van, carrying him to Mymensingh jail after a gun attack in Trishal upazila.

The tribunal found Momin, who faced the trial in absentia, guilty on all the three charges against him and sentenced him to death on all the charges. Momin was sentenced to death for killing 10 people, including former zamindar Shurendra Nath Das, after torturing them in confinement and setting fire to their houses at Kalsha, Rathabari villages under then-Adamdighi police station on April 22, 1971. Momin received another death sentence for killing five people of Kashimala village under the same police station on October 27, 1971 after abducting them on October 24, 1971. The tribunal also sentenced Momin to death for killing four people after taking them away from the Adamdighi police custody on November 13, 1971 and for abducting and torturing several people and carrying out several arson attacks between October 25, 1971 and November 11, 1971. The tribunal, however, said that the ‘sentences of death’ on all the charges would get merged to a single death sentence.
