Four more prosecution witnesses gave their statements before an Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal in connection with the Holey Artisan attack (July 1, 2016) case on January 16, reports Daily Star. The witnesses are Sanjoy Barua, an electrician of the café; Mohammad Hossain, a security guard; Mohammad Lelin Mollah, an employee of the café; and Tarun Gomez, manager of a building adjacent to Holey Artisan Bakery. Judge Majibur Rahman of Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal recorded their statements. Afterwards, defense counsel for the accused cross-examined the witnesses on different points. Terrorists attacked the Holy Artisan Bakery in Gulshan's diplomatic zone of Dhaka city and killed 20 people.

The order is based on the probe report submitted by Shahbagh Police Station on June 30 2018. A court in Pirojpur on February 19 sent war crimes convict Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee’s son, Masud Bin Sayedee, to jail, rejecting his bail plea, reports Dhaka Tribune. According to the case statement, Masud was holding a meeting at a house in the Saeedkhali area of Indorkani upazila on December 25. The HC may take at least three more months for releasing the full text of its verdict in the biggest ever criminal case in the country's history in terms of number of accused and convicts, Deputy Attorney General KM Zahid Sarwar Kazal told the newspaper on February 22. A Dhaka court on October 13 framed charges against eight cadres of banned militant outfit Ansar Al Islam in a case filed over the murder of publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan in 2015, reports The Daily Star. Six of the accused, now in jail, pleaded not guilty after Judge Majibur Rahman of the Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal read out the charges. The six are alleged killing squad leader Moinul Hasan Shamim alias Samir (24); alleged trainer Abdus Sabur alias Samad (23); and cadres Khairul Islam (24), Sheikh Abdullah (27), Abu Siddiq Sohel (34), and Mozammel Hossain (25).The court also issued arrest warrants for fugitives - Maj Zia and Akram Hossain. On October 15, five persons were given death penalty by International Crimes Tribunal-1 for their involvement in crimes against humanity during 1971 Liberation war, reports Daily Star. The five persons Ranju Miah, Abdul Jabbar Mondal, Jachijar Rahman, Abdul Wahed Mondal and Montaz Alia Bepari belonged to Gaibandha Sadar upazila and were involved with Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI), an anti-liberation party, during the war. The division has so far disposed of only eight such appeals in the last six years. The eight war criminals whose appeals have already been settled by the top court are JeI Ameer (Chief) Motiur Rahman Nizami, its Secretary General Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed, and its leaders Delawar Hossain Sayedee, Muhammad Kamaruzaman, Abdul Quader Mollah, Mir Quasem Ali and ATM Azharul Islam and BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury. Among them, Nizami, Mojaheed, Kamaruzzaman, Quader Mollah, Mir Quasem Ali and Salauddin Quader Chowdhury have been executed after the apex court has dismissed their review petitions against its verdicts confirming their death sentences. The Supreme Court (SC) on October 31 upheld the death penalty of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam (67) for his involvement in genocide and crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, reports The Daily Star. A four-member bench of the SC’s Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, delivered the verdict around five years after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) handed down capital punishment to Azhar for the crimes committed in Rangpur. Following the verdict, he now can file a petition with the SC seeking a review of the judgment. The petition will have to be filed within 15 days after the convict receives the certified copy of the verdict, according to court sources. If the SC rejects the review petition, Azhar can seek President’s clemency. If the President does not grant the mercy, the SC verdict will be executed.

The Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal of Dhaka city on November 27 sentenced seven Neo-Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (Neo-JMB) militants to death for their involvement in the 2016 Holey Artisan Bakery attack, terming it a disgraceful attack aimed at assassinating the non-communal character of Bangladesh, reports The Daily Star. The seven death-row convicts are - Jahangir Hossain, Aslam Hossain Rash, Hadisur Rahman, Rakibul Hasan Regan, Mohamad Abdus Sabur Khan, Shariful Islam Khaled and Mamunur Rashid Ripon. The Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal acquitted one accused as it found him not guilty in the atrocity. The court cleared accused Mizanur Rahman alias Boro Mizan from the charges. Five young militants, armed with guns, machete and grenades, stormed the upscale eatery in the diplomatic zone in Gulshan on July 1, 2016, and held the diners hostage before brutally killing 20 of them - three Bangladeshis, seven Japanese, nine Italians and one Indian. The five militants were killed during a rescue operation by army commandoes. The members of Neo-JMB, formed by a faction of JMB, carried out the “brutal and monstrous murders” in the bakery to draw attention of the IS and endanger public safety by waging so-called Jihad, the court said.

The Supreme Court (SC) on December 3 set January 14 to deliver its verdict on an appeal filed by convicted war criminal Syed Mohammad Qaisar (80) challenging the death penalty handed to him by International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) in 2014, reports The Daily Star. A four-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain fixed the date after concluding hearing on the appeal. The ICT-2 on December 23, 2014 awarded death penalty to Qaisar for committing crimes against humanity during the country’s Liberation War in 1971. During the Liberation War, he was allegedly associated with the occupation army and carried out atrocities in Habiganj and Brahmanbaria.

Sattar of Raninagar in Rajshahi city of Rajshahi District was in the dock. In 1971, he was a cadre of Islami Chhatra Sangha, the then student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), and joined the infamous Razakar force. He was charged on August 8, 2018 with two counts of crimes against humanity. The tribunal sentenced Sattar to death for abducting Babar Mandal from Shaheb Bazar of Rajshshi city on September 26, 1971, taking him to Shaheed Samsuzzoha Hall torture camp at Rajshashi University, torturing him in confinement there, and shooting him to death at the killing ground in the eastern side of the hall at midnight on September 27, 1971. He was also sentenced to death for abducting 11 freedom fighters by attacking village Talaimari, Boalia, Rajshahi on November 2, 1971, taking them to the same torture camp of Razakar force, torturing them in confinement there for two days and shooting nine of them to death at the same killing ground on November 4, 1971.
