Judge Mohamad Akhtaruzzaman pronounced the verdict convicting the six. The court also fined Tarique, his cousin Moninur Rahman, former BNP lawmaker Qazi Saleemul Huq, businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed and former principal secretary Kamal Uddin Siddique BTK 2.10 crore each.

A Dhaka Court on March 19 indicted former Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson, Begum Khaleda Zia, in charge of corruption for allegedly using an illegal fund to buy land for a charity named after her late husband, Ziaur Rahman, reports Times of India. But the application for bail in the first case was not pressed by her lawyer AJ Mohamamd Ali. In the 1st case she faces allegedly for burning the same case at the same place and time. The Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal has accepted charges against eight persons in the Holey Artisan attack case and acquitted Hasnat Karim of the charges on August 8, reports Dhaka Tribune. Six of the accused were produced before the court during the hearing. They are Jahangir Alam alias Rajib Gandhi, Rashedul Islam alias Rash, Sohel Mahfuz alias Hatkata Mahfuz, Rakibul Islam Reagan, Mizanur Rahman alias Boro Mizan and Hadisur Rahman Sagor. Two others – Shariful Islam Khalid and Mamunur Rashid Ripon – are absconding. The court has issued arrest warrants for them. Police pressed charges against eight people in the case on July 23.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on August 13 sentenced to death five Patuakhali men guilty of committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971, reports The Daily Star. The five, who were members of notorious Razakar force, were given the punishment for participating and assisting the Pakistan army in the killing of 17 people, rape of 15 women and torture of several others in Itbaria village of Patuakhali Sadar upazila in May of 1971. The convicts are Esahaq Shikder (83), Abdul Goni Hawlader (72), Mohamad Awal (69), Abdus Sattar Pyada (65) and Solaiman Mridha (86). All of them are behind bars. All the convicts were involved with the Muslim League (ML), an anti-liberation political party, and joined locally formed Razakar Bahini, an auxiliary force of the Pakistan army, to commit the crimes.

The fugitives are Shariful Islam and Mamunur Rashid. On August 8, the tribunal accepted the charge sheet against eight accused, and issued arrest warrants for the two fugitives. Six of the accused are behind bars. They are Jahangir Alam alias Rajib Gandhi, Rakibul Hasan Regan, Rashedul Islam alias Rash, Sohel Mahfuz, Mizanur Rahman alias Baro Mizan and Hadisur Rahman Sagar.

International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on August 30 framed four charges against four Sherpur men in a case filed for allegedly committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971, reports The Daily Star. The tribunal fixed September 30 to begin their trial through recording of opening statement of the prosecution and testimony of prosecution's first witness, Prosecutor Rezia Sultana said. The four accused - all from NaklaUpazila - are SM Aminuzzaman Faruk (58), AKM Akram Hossain (62), Emdadul Haque aliasKwaza Doctor (74) and Mokhlesur Rahman Tara (66). All of them except Tara have been arrested. The charges include abduction, confinement, torture, arson, enslavement and murder.

The prosecution on September 10 told a Dhaka court that Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was the chief architect of the August 21, 2004, grenade attack that killed 24 people including Ivy Rahman, former President of Mahila Awami League and wife of late President Zillur Rahman, reports The Daily Star. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the chief of Awami League narrowly escaped the attack with an ear injury. Two cases - one for murder and another under the Explosive Substances Act - were filed against 49 people with Motijheel Police Station. Of the 49 accused, eight, including three former Inspector Generals of Police, are now on bail; 18, including Tarique, are on the run; and 23, including former BNP Ministers Lutfozzaman Babar and Abdus Salam Pintu, are in jail.

The Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 1 on September 18 posted for October 10 the pronouncement of verdict in two cases for grenade attack on an Awami League (AL) rally in Dhaka on August 21, 2004, reports New Age. Tribunal judge Shahed Nuruddin passed the order after concluding the hearing of final arguments of the prosecution and defence counsel for 49 accused, including acting Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairman Tarique Rahman, now in London, and his cousin retired Navy officer Saiful Islam Duke. 24 people, including late president Zillur Rahman’s wife Ivy Rahman, were killed and over 200 were injured in the grenade attack. AL President Sheikh Hasina, now the Prime Minister, escaped the attack but the explosions caused her hearing damage. Two cases—one for the murder and the other under the Explosive Substances Act—were filed for the grenade attack.

Speedy Trial Tribunal-1, a Special Court, on October 10 ruled in the two cases filed over the grenade attack on an Awami League rally on August 21, 2004 on Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka, reports Daily Star. The incident primarily targeted at the then leader of opposition Sheikh Hasina Wajed resulted in the death of 24 people, several others were injured. Those found to be guilty include former State Minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar, Bangladesh National Party (BNP) Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman and handed down various punishments for the bombing. Former Deputy Minister for Education Abdus Salam Pintu, former Director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) Brigadier General (retd) Rezzaqul Haider, former Director General of National Security Intelligence (NSI) Brigadier General (retd) Abdur Rahim were also found guilty in the case. All of these 38 accused were also sentenced to life term imprisonment for causing grievous injuries to the survivors. In the murder case, Tarique and 18 others were sentenced to life in prison while former State Minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar and 18 others were given death penalty on charges of killing through criminal conspiracy. The Special Court also found Tarique, Babar and 36 others guilty in the case filed under the explosives substance act and handed down punishments ranging from death sentence to 20 years in prison. Judge Shahed Nuruddin of Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 observed, “The specialised deadly Arges grenades that are used in wars were blasted at the Awami League's Central Office on 23 Bangabandhu Avenue in broad daylight with the help of the then state machinery ". Judge Shahed Nuruddin further clarified, "The prosecution has been able to prove that the accused held meetings to conspire in different places before the incident and blasted grenades in a planned manner”.

The convicts were awarded the punishment for their direct involvement in genocide and crimes against humanity perpetrated in three upazilas -Lakhai of Habiganj, Nasirnagar of Brahmanbaria and Astogram of Kishoreganj. Liakat Ali, 63, former president of Lakhai upazila AL, and Aminul Islam alias Rajab Ali, 62, of Astogram upazila, are now on the run. Liakat was a commander of local “Razakar Bahini” and Aminul a commander of local “Al-Badr Bahini”. They, however, used to move together in the localities and had a nexus with the Pakistan army stationed in Astogram. Both Razakar and Al-Badr Bahini were auxiliary forces of the Pakistan army in 1971.

Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit arrested these individuals on the charge of spreading terror propaganda among Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar in the guise of a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) named Small Kindness Bangladesh (SKB). CTTC officials said the NGO, which was spreading terror propaganda in the name of humanitarian activities in the Rohingya camps, was banned by the NGO Affairs Bureau for its alleged involvement in militancy financing as well as conducting anti-state activities in August. Despite the ban, the NGO was operating its activities. Pakistan-based Al-Khidmat Foundation, an organisation that has connections with terror outfits Al-Qaeda and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), was operating militant activities in Rohingya camps through the NGO, the investigating officials claimed.
