According to Daily Star, the High Court on January 26 rejected three bail petitions filed by Asadullah-al Galib, chief of the Ahle Hadith Andolon Bangladesh (AHAB), who is accused in arms and explosives cases. Galib, a Professor at the Rajshahi University, was arrested on February 23, 2005 on charges of involvement in militancy related activities in northern Bangladesh from his Rajshahi University residence. Mohammad also confessed that he along with other JMB members were trained on shooting, blasting bombs and spying at Baghmara in Rajshahi. According to Daily Star, the Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal in Barisal on February 20 sentenced the absconding top leaders of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) leaders Abdur Rahman, Bangla Bhai, Molla Omar and Amzad alias Khalid Saifullah to 40 years' rigorous imprisonment for abetting and plotting the killing of two judges in Jhalakathi. The Tribunal acquitted another accused, Sultan giving him benefit of doubt. The sentence would be effective from the date of arrest or surrender of the accused before the tribunal, the judgement said.

On February 28, a court in Jhenidah sentenced 21 members of the Jamaa'tul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to death for taking part in the August 17, 2005-serial bomb blasts. Judge Anisur Rahman Khan of Jhenidah District and Sessions Judge's Court sentenced the 21 to death by hanging after they were found guilty of carrying out bomb blasts in Jhenidah. Three of the convicts were tried in absentia. The convicts had carried out bomb attacks at six places, including the judge court premises in the district town.

The court also heard a case against him under the Explosive Substances Act but reserved its verdict. Sunny pleaded guilty in both the cases. In his statement, Sunny said that he possessed firearms, ammunition and bomb making materials for establishing Islamic rule in the country. The SC registrar said, “Since the letters came through the jail authorities who attached their forwarding to the letters, we have accepted those as jail appeal.” The militants in their letters, reportedly, said that they are justified in killing people for establishing Islamic rules and that the judges, who held trial under taguti (non-Islamic) laws neglecting the Shariah, themselves deserve death. The Supreme Court on October 19 fixed November 5 for the hearing in petitions of six top Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants regarding reconsidering the death sentence awarded to them. Deputy Attorney General Helaluddin Mollah told New Age, “If the petitions are not accepted by the apex court and the militants don’t appeal for the president’s mercy, death sentences will be executed in a week from the order of rejection.” Meanwhile, the counsel Sarwar Ahmed, in a letter to the Chief Justice, has refused to conduct the petitions as a state defence lawyer. According to Daily Star, a case has been filed with a magistrate's court in Satkhira accusing four Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) leaders for forging Madrassa (seminary) textbooks. Bhomra union Dakhil Madrassa teacher filed the case with the court of Magistrate Abu Jafar on November 9 and after a preliminary hearing the court ordered the accused to appear before the court within 15 days. The accused are Sadar sub-district Ameer (chief) of the Jamaat and Kushkhali Union Parishad Chairman Maulana Abdul Gaffar who is also the son-in-law of former JeI lawmaker Maulana Abdul Khaleque, JeI leaders Maulana Altaf Hossain and Maulana Jamal Uddin and Kamal Uddin owner of School and College Library. All the accused are the district leaders of Madrassa Shikkhak Parishad, an organisation of the JeI. According to the complainant, the accused changed the cover and name of writers and publishers of several books of class six to class nine and published those under the name of fake writers and publishers in 2005. The complainant said that the JeI leaders earned over Taka 8 lakh by selling those forged books to students.

According to Daily Star, following the verdict, the convicted JMB cadres warned judge Shahed Nooruddin of death saying that "their court" has already sentenced the judge to death and the order would be executed shortly. The convicts reportedly said that those who followed the "worldly laws" are not real judges. The convicts can appeal to the High Court against the verdict within 30 days from the day of receipt of the judgment copy.

The Supreme Court (SC) on November 28 upheld the death sentences passed on the six militant leaders of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) for killing two judges in Jhalakathi, reports Daily Star. A seven-member full bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice J. R. Mudassir Hossain rejected the appeal of the militants seeking permission to appeal against a High Court judgement upholding the death sentences. The convicted militants, including JMB chief Abdur Rahman, his deputy Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, Majlish-e-shura (the highest decision-making body) members Ataur Rahman Sunny, Abdul Awal, and Khaled Saifullah, suicide bomber Iftekhar al Mamun, will have to petition the president for mercy. In the absence of the mercy petition within the stipulated time, the jail authorities will issue death warrants fixing dates for their executions. Senior assistant judges, Jagannath Pandey and Sohel Ahmed, were killed in a suicide bomb attack at Purba Chadkati in the Jhalakathi town on November 14, 2005, in the wake of a series of bombings by the militants across the country.

The High Court on December 13 granted bail to Asadullah Al Galib, leader of the Ahle Hadith Andolon Bangladesh (AHAB), for six months in a bomb blast case in Bogra, reports Daily Star. Galib, who is the head of the Arabic Department of Rajshahi University and was recently made a professor, was accused of bomb blasts at a local fair at Laxmikola Shah Rawshan Jalal High School ground in 2004 that left one person dead. He was arrested on February 26, 2005, from his Rajshahi residence. The 61-year-old Galib was accused in eight cases following a series of bomb blasts at non-governmental organization offices and cultural functions. Of the eight cases, he has been acquitted in five, facing trial in two and one is under investigation.

This was the first judgment of a case related with the August 17 series bomb blasts in Barisal. The acquitted persons were identified as Ziaur Rahman Zia, director of Al Ikram Ikram Samaj Kalyan Sangstha, Golam Morshed Chowdhury Reza, Jalal Ahmed, Hafez Saiful Islam, Abu Yusuf Majumdar, Abu Solaiman Sujan, director, officials and staff of the organisation, and their 'associates' Md Maruf, Jasimuddin and Zahid Babu. Zia, Yusuf and Babu have been absconding since the trial began. The six others, who are behind bars, were not released from jail as all of the nine are also accused in 11 other cases lodged in connection with the August 17 blasts.
