Dhaka Special Tribunal on January 4 rejected bail of former Joint Secretary General of Hefazat-e Islam (HeI) Mamunul Huq who is a charge sheeted accused in subversive case, reports Daily Observer. Judge Fatima Imrose Khonika of Special Tribunal of Dhaka passed the order responding to a plea. At the same time, she set March 13 for recording the depositions of the witnesses in the case. On January 14, 2015, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamat-e-Islami (JeI) leaders and workers vandalised vehicles and set those on fire at Madhya Pirerbagh of Sheorapa under Mirpur Model Police Station in Dhaka city. Later, ASI Khondker Rajib Ahmed of Mirpur Model Police Station filed the case under the Special Powers Act. Mamunul Huq was a charge sheeted accused in the case. On December 4, he was produced before the tribunal for showing him arrested. After the hearing the tribunal granted the petition. Afterward, Mamunul Huque's lawyer Syed Zainul Abedin Mesbah submitted a prayer to the tribunal seeking his client's bail. After the hearing, the tribunal rejected the bail prayer.

Pabna District Special Court on January 4 sentenced to life imprisonment four cadres of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) for killing a man in Santhia upazila (sub-District) of Pabna District in 2006, reports The Daily Star. The convicts are Wasim Munshi (39), Mohammd Mostafa (42), Mirazul Islam (43) and Shahadat Hossain (30). Of them, Shahdat and Wasim were present before the court while the other two accused were tried in absentia. District Special Judge Mohammad Ahsan Tarek also fined the convicts Tk 25,000 each. According to the case statement, Rafikul Islam of village Gobindapur village went to visit his in-laws' house at Sagarkandi village on October, 19, 2006. The same day, PBCP cadres abducted Rafikul from the house and later killed him.

Dhaka Special Tribunal on January 10 sentenced 10 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to jail for five years in a case filed over cocktail explosion during a hartal in Dhaka city's Bhashantek Police Station area in 2013, reports Observer. The jailed persons are: Sumon Chandra, Jasim, Aminul, Sohel, Kawsar, Jewel, Abdur Rahman, Shaheed, Mohsin and Liton. They were also fined BDT 5,000 each. In default, they will have to suffer three months more in jail. According to the prosecution, the accused exploded cocktails at Bhashantek intersection on November 26, 2013, during hartal-blockade called by BNP-led 18-party alliance. Later, Bhashantek Police Station sub-inspector Zahidul Islam lodged a case under the Explosive Substances Act.

A trial court in Rajshahi District on January 24 sentenced President of Haripur Union unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), to ten years behind the bar on charge of his involvement in cyber-crimes in the district in 2017, reports Daily New nation. The court also fined the convict Abdul Mukit alias Raju BDT 10,00,000, in default, to suffer one year more in jail. Rajshahi Divisional Cyber Tribunal Judge Ziaur Rahman found the accused guilty of the charge and handed down the verdict in presence of the convict. Saidur Rahman, Haripur Union President of Awami League, had lodged a case with Paba Police Station against Mukit related to his involvement in cyber-crimes on May 27, 2017.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on February 2 declared penalty of two convicts in wartime crimes invalid due to their death, reports Bangladesh Post. The apex court abated appeals of two war crimes case convicts from Keshabpur in Jessore District against their conviction and sentences by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1), as the two have already died of natural causes in jail custody. The two convicts are Maulana Sakhawat Hossain who was awarded a death sentence for committing crimes against humanity in 1971, and Billal Hossain Biswas, who was awarded life term imprisonment in the case. On August 10, 2016, the ICT-1 awarded death sentence to Sakhawat Hossain and life imprisonment till natural death to Billal Hossain Biswas. However, Billal died in 2018 and Sakhawat died on December 11, 2021, in jail, before the hearing of their appeals.

Chuadanga District Court on February 8 sentenced a cadre of banned extremist outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to life term imprisonment in a case filed over 2005 series bomb blasts, reports New Age. Chuadanga Additional District and Sessions Judge Court acting Judge Lutfor Rahman Shishir pronounced the judgment in presence of the accused. The lifer is Saikhul Islam alias Rakib (35), son of Giasuddin of Panchakaran village in Bagerhat District. The court passed the order after examining statements of 18 witnesses in the case. On August 17, 2005, some JMB extremists exploded bombs at the court premises and old jail area in Chuadanga city. On August 27, 2006, Police arrested Shaikhul Islam.

Dhaka Metropolitan Court on February 18 sent Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) Mia Golam Parwar to jail after end of his three-day remand in a case lodged under Explosive Substance Act, reports Prothom Alo. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Yasmin Ara passed the order as Police produced him before the court and pleaded to keep him behind the bars till the end of probe in the case. On February 14 the court placed the JeI leader on three-day remand in the case lodged with Paltan Police Station. A Bangladeshi construction worker in Singapore was sentenced to two years and eight months' jail on February 21 for funding Syrian terrorist group, reports The Daily Star. Ahmed Faysal (27), made 15 fund transfers in all through various online platforms to Medical Aid Syria (MAS) and Ramadan 2020 Emergency Homes for Syria. He did so despite having reasonable grounds to believe that the monies would, in part, benefit terrorist group Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is based in Syria. Ahmed started working as a construction worker in Singapore in 2017 and became radicalised the following year. Ahmed was arrested on November 24, 2020, under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for terrorism-related activities and issued an Order of Detention.

The convict is Ziaur Rahman alias Sagar alias Sabbir, Khulna ‘divisional chief’ of JMB. Khulna Additional Metropolitan Sessions judge SM Ashikur Rahman handed down the verdict. The court also fined him BDT 20,000, in default, to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment, said lawyer Kazi Sabbir Ahmed of the court. According to the case, members of Rapid Action Battalion arrested Ziaur Rahman from Miapara of Khulna District on December 29, 2005. He has also been slapped with a fine of BDT 20,000, the default of which will result in an additional jail-term of two months. According to court sources, a notice was issued to Mufti Izahar on July 4, 2013, to submit a statement of his wealth. On September 17, 2013, ACC Deputy Assistant Director Mohammad Sirajul Haque, filed the case with Khulshi Police Station after Izahrul failed to provide the statement. On April 21, 2014, the ACC filed a chargesheet in the case and an arrest order was issued on April 26. The court framed charges against him on May 12, 2014, and he was arrested on August 7, 2015.

International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1), chaired by Justice Mohamad Shahinur Islam, announced the verdict. Khaleq Mondol was in the dock when the verdict was delivered while Roknuzzaman had been tried in absentia. In 1971, Khaleq was the organizer of Razakar forces in Satkhira, and Roknuzzaman was a member of that force. The prosecution had charged the two with a total of six counts of crimes against humanity, all of which had been proved beyond doubt, the tribunal said. The case was filed in 2015 and the tribunal started the trial on March 5, 2018.

Convicts Asaduzzaman alias Apple of Patgram's Rasulganj village, Shafiq Islam of the same village, and Mokhlesur Rahman of Sohagpur village of the same upazila were sentenced to life in prison. Abu Zahid alias Zahidul Islam alias Rumel of Patgram Post Office area was sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment. All the convicts are currently in Lalmonirhat District Jail. They were arrested on August 8, 2018, while they were having a "secret meeting" in Patgram's Post Office area.

The plot to snatch two death-row convicts from the Dhaka court premises in the Dhaka Division in November was planned inside the jail by five operatives of the banned Ansar al-Islam along with 20-25 others, Police said on December 7, reports The Daily Star. The five militants who are involved in the crime are Arafat Rahman, Khairul Islam alias Sifat, Mozammel Hossain, Sheikh Abdullah and Abdur Sabur. All five are in jail.

On December 25, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Sheikh Sadi ordered to send Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JeI) ameer (chief) Dr Shafiqur Rahman to jail, reports Dhaka tribune. Earlier, on December 13, the court granted his seven-day remand and later on December 21, three-day remand. After the request of the investigation officer, the court ordered him to be sent to jail, until the investigation is over.
