A Darbha janpad panchayat (village level local self government institution) member, who was abducted by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) on April 21, was found dead in Bastar District on April 24, reports PTI. The body of Panduram (42) was found at Chingur Nullah in Tulsi Dongri area under Darbha Police Station limits, Darbha Station House Officer (SHO) Durgesh Sharma said. Panduram was abducted along with his assistant Sanat Sethiya on April 21 from his native place Koleng by a group of armed Maoist cadres, he said. However, Sethiya was later released on April 23, he said. Condemning the incident strongly, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh said that it was a "cowardly" act by Maoists. "Panduram used to work for the development of villages and people with great dedication. He was an active and hard working representative," Singh said in his condolence message.

Unidentified armed militants abducted two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates, contesting the coming Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections, reports The Assam Tribune on May 6. One of the abducted candidates has been identified as Laminthang Kipgen from Tuzang Vichong of Sadar Hills ADC. He was abducted on May 3, while another BJP candidate of Churachandpur ADC was abducted from Geljang area in Senapati District. Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) is suspected to be behind both abductions.

Kisuram, a resident of neighbouring Chihka village, was also attacked by the ultras. He was grievously injured in the attack and has been taken to a hospital,” informed SRP Kalluri, the Inspector General (IG) of Police, Bastar range. “The deceased Sarpanch and the deputy Sarpanch were killed by the Maoists on the pretext of being police informers. But the fact is that they have been killed because they contested and won elections despite Maoists’ opposition,” claimed the IG.

In worst ever shelling by Pakistan Army for the past several years, six civilians including a Sarpanch (head of Panchayat, village level local self Government institution) were killed and over 20 other civilians injured as Pakistan resorted to unprecedented shelling with 120 mm and 82 mm mortars directly targeting civilian areas in Balakote, Manjakote, Sabzian, Mandi, Mankot, Hamirpur and surrounding sectors in Poonch and Rajouri Districts on August 15, reports Daily Excelsior. Militants shot dead a National Conference (NC) worker, identified as Javed Ahmad Khan (30), resident of Khanday Pora, in South Kashmir’s Awantipora area in Pulwama District on August 25, reports Daily Excelsior. Khan had gone to wash room in the compound of his house and as he came out he was fired at indiscriminately killing him on the spot. The militants fled away under the cover of darkness. Khan was arrested by Army in March 2010 from Chandrigam Tral and was released after two years in 2013. One pistol, a grenade and six rounds were recovered from him. His house was fired at by militants in 2014. However, he escaped unhurt. He was presently working as lecturer on contractual basis at Guru Nanak B Ed College, Awantipora.

On August 31, protestors torched the private houses of Lok Sabha (lower house of Indian Parliament) Member of Parliament (MP) Thangso Baite, Health Minister Phungzathang Tonsing, Assembly Hill Areas Committee chairman Chaltolien Amo and Congress legislators T.N. Haokip, Manga Vaiphei and Vungjagin Valte, located in and around Churachandpur town. Churachandpur Deputy Commissioner Lunminthang Haokip said that on August 31, two persons died of bullet injuries, one was charred to death as the houses were set on fire and the fourth died in a road accident caused by road blocks. He, however, could not say who fired the shots. Minlan Gangte, information secretary of the Kuki Students Organisation, Churachandpur stated that "The amendment of the bill disturbs the rights of the tribal people. People are angry because our representatives did not speak for us when it was passed in the Assembly," He said the land law has not been extended to the hills till now and if it is extended to the hills it will disturb the tribal people's rights.

A former village sarpanch (head of village level local self-Government institution), identified as Somlu Tati, who was abducted by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), was found dead on September 15 in Bijapur District, reports Zee News. The body of the former sarpanch of Todka village panchayat was found lying in a pool of blood on a road near his native place Todka under Gangaloor Police Station limits, Bijapur Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Indira Kalyan Elesela said. Tati was reportedly abducted by Maoists last week from his village, after he was suspected to be a ‘Police informer’.
