Naxalites of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) shot dead a political functionary, Bandla Srinivasa Rao, at Guthikonda village in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh on January 11-night alleging that he was a police informer. The action of the Naxalites is reportedly being seen as a counter to the death of a woman sympathiser of the party in Prakasam district on January 8 in an alleged encounter. Protesting the encounter on January 11, CPI-Maoist cadres had blasted a house and left a letter at the spot saying that they would continue to kill activists of the ruling Congress party till the police stopped encounters.

Three persons were reportedly killed and 90 others sustained injuries when terrorists targeted the former Minister and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Ghulam Hassan Mir’s public meeting with a grenade explosion at Tangmarg in the Baramulla district on November 15. The PDP leader and five of his Personal Security Officers, a Deputy Superintendent of Police and Station House Officer of Tangmarg were among those wounded. According to Daily Excelsior, the grenade explosion occurred minutes after Mir and some of his PDP colleagues addressed a public meeting. Someone who identified himself as Majid Iqbal of the Al-Arifeen later informed the local news agency KNS over telephone that cadres of his group had carried out the attack.
