A leader of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist was shot dead by suspected Maoists (CPI-Maoist) in the Belpahari area of West Midnapur district on January 9, according to Times of India. Birpur zonal committee member Palaram Tudu was killed when the attackers opened fire at him on a paddy field in the Jamjhulka village under Belpahari police station, Inspector General of Police (Law and order), Raj Kanojia, said. "We are not ruling out the involvement of the Maoists," he stated. The Belpahiri region, which has reportedly witnessed landmine blasts in recent months, has been identified by the State administration as Maoist-infested.

Suspected militants carried out a grenade blast at the house of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, in the Nageen area of capital Srinagar. Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres on August 10 detonated explosions targeting the house of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the Kanker district. Police sources told Press Trust of India, "Using a tiffin bomb, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), the Maoists triggered the blast in wee hours on Friday and exploded the house of Vikram Usendi, a former minister and a current BJP MLA at Pakhanjur, about 210 km from the state capital." Since the house was vacant no one was injured in the incident, while the explosion damaged a portion of the building. Some leaflets were left behind by the Maoists at the site.

While no casualty was reported, the building was partially damaged in the incident. Police said the militants had planted the remote-controlled bomb at one end of the perimeter wall of the residence. The blast was reportedly meant to prevent the Minister from attending a public meeting at Dolamara, where militants of the same outfit had shot dead 18 Hindi-speaking persons in two separate attacks on August 10 and August 12. “His Dolamara visit has now been postponed,” a source close to the Cabinet Minister said.
