Security Forces (SFs) neutralized a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp following an exchange of fire near Lengerimunda village at Chakapad area in Kandhamal District of Odisha on January 7, reports The New Indian Express. An anti-Maoist operation was launched by a joint team of Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Volunteer Force (DVF) near the said village. While combing operation was underway, the rebels resorted to heavy firing and hurled grenades.The SFs retaliated following which the Maoists escaped taking advantage of the dense forest cover. While no casualty was reported from either side in the incident, the SFs recovered a detonator, two hand grenades, country-made guns, two magazines, haversacks, black uniforms, medicines, clothes and utensils from the camp.

Security Forces (SFs) recovered a landmine allegedly planted by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) to target the SFs in Handikhal forest under Chitrakonda block in Malkangiri District of Odisha, reports Sambad on January 10.Acting on a tip-off, Border Security Forces (BSF)troopers had initiated a search operation in the area, later, a landmine weighing five kilograms kept inside a drum was spotted by the SFs. A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, identified as Saybo alias Ranu, carrying a cash reward of INR 800,000 on his head was killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in a forested area between Kutru and Ketulnar under Kutur Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on January 16, reports The Pioneer. A joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Police launched a combing operation in the said area. On seeing the SFs, Maoists opened fire resulting in a gun-battle in which the Maoist was killed. Ranu was a‘commander’ of the Maoists’ Farsegarh Action Squad and ‘Deputy Commander’ of Farsegarh LOS (Local Operating Squad). Pistol rounds, arrow bombs and daily use items were recovered from the spot.

Security Forces (SFs) arrested two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘militia members’, along with explosive materials from Kurnapalli forest area in Cherla Mandal (administrative sub-division) in Bhadradri Kothagudem District of Telangana on January 24, reports Telangana Today. Circle Inspector (CI) B. Ashok stated that a search team comprising Cherla Police, Special Party personnel and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)’s 141 Battalion spotted three persons moving suspiciously in the forests. The SFs chased them and took two persons into custody while the third one ran away. The arrested persons were identified as – Kovasi Bhimaiah of Dokupadu in Chhattisgarh and Sodi Deepak of Burugupadu, in Charla Mandal. Both were serving as couriers for CPI-Maoist for the past three years besides being the ‘militia members’ of Cherla Area Committee.

A Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) jawan(trooper) and at least two cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were injured during an encounter on Toklo hills at the Jamro axis in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on February 7, reports Hindustan Times. “A CoBRA jawan has been injured while 2-3 Maoist extremists have also been hit in the encounter at Toklo hills of West Singhbhum district this morning. The injured jawan has been airlifted to Ranchi for appropriate medical care. The encounter happened on the border at West Singhbhum-Saraikela-Kharsawan-Khunti triangle. The search operation is still on and more details are awaited,” Ajay Linda, West Singhbhum,Superintendent of Police (SP), said. The injured CoBRA jawan has been identified as Narayan Chetri from Assam. “Narayan Chetri is now out of danger. The joint forces of district police, CRPF and CoBRA battalions have inflicted heavy damages on the Maoists. 2-3 Naxals [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] have sustained bullet injuries and search is on to trace them. We have also seized pipe bombs, land mines, IEDs, several rounds of ammunition and rucksacks,” Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Kolhan,Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP), said.Police said a Maoist squad led by Toofan alias Patiram Majhi (Giridih), who has a bounty of INR 10 million on his head, and ‘area commander’ Maharaj Pramanik, who has a reward of INR 1 million on his head, opened fired on the Security Forces (SFs) when they were on a search operation. Stating that the operation was still on and would not stop until the Maoist squads active in the three districts of Kolhan are neutralised, the DIGP, Singh, said, “We will not spare anyone and will not stop before wiping out the Naxals completely. The developmental works for the people have been greatly hampered by these naxals and their subversive activities. They better surrender or be ready to be neutralized.”

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on February 10 carried out searches in the dense forests of Khunti District in Jharkhand and recovered high-grade explosives belonging to the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), reports The New Indian Express. The searches were conducted in the Korangburu hillock at Jilingkel at the instance of an arrested Maoist identified as Naina alias Birsa Munda. “During the early morning operation, 100 metres of Cordtex wire (a type of detonating cord) and high-grade explosive -- 126 Gelatin sticks, weighing about 15 kgs -- were recovered”, an NIA spokesperson said. Naina was arrested in connection with the killing of five Police personnel in an attack by CPI-Maoist in June, 2019 at Kukru Haat in Seraikela Kharsawan District. The Jharkhand Police had arrested 11 accused and filed two charge-sheets against them. The NIA re-registered the case in December 2020 and arrested five more armed cadres of CPI-Maoist. During Naina's questioning, it was revealed that explosives procured by the CPI-Maoist were hidden at the Korangburu hillock, the NIA spokesperson added.

After receiving information regarding the presence of armed Maoists in the forest area, a special team of Special Operation Group Hawk Force and District Force was initiated an operation. On Spotting the SFs, the Maoists fired indiscriminately at the team who retaliated leading to a gun-battle in which the two Maoists were killed. After the firing stopped, a search operation was carried out by the SFsin which the bodies of a male Maoist identified as - Dulla alias Manu Dakshin and a female Maoist identified as - Geeta Dakshin Bastar were found. Both were working as ‘Area Committee Members’, Dakshin Bastar of Vistar Platoon 03 and were carrying a reward of INR 300,000 each by the Madhya Pradesh government and INR 800,000 each by the Chhattisgarh government. At least 13 Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed in an exchange of fire with Maharashtra Police’s C-60 commandos in a forest between Paydi-Kotmi in Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra on May 21, reports The Times of India. CPI-Maoist cadres of Kasansoor Dalam (armed squad) were trying to organise a meeting with the villagers regarding tendu leaves contract when the Police got a hint of it. The CPI-Maoist cadres had met the villagers and were supposed to sneak out early in the dawn but their camp was stormed by the C-60 commandos from Gadchiroli and Aheri's Pranhita headquarters. The encounter had taken place during the daybreak. Police had kicked off the operation on May 20 after learning about the CPI-Maoist cadres’ presence in the forest. About 13 dead bodies of CPI-Maoist cadres being recovered and the searches are still on. Police also recovered some arms, weapons and substantial literature and other materials of daily need from the encounter site, said Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Naxal range, Sandip Patil.

During a search operation, a joint squad of Venkatapuram Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel nabbed Boodu after a brief chase, when the latter allegedly tried to flee along with several other militia members on noticing the Police in the Pamunuru forest area on May 30. SFs recovered explosive substances including two pressure cooker bombs, two tiffin box bombs, four detonators, electric wire bundles, batteries and a walkie-talkie from his possession. He was acting on the instructions of CPI-Maoist leaders of Wajedu-Venkatapuram Area Committee to target the combing parties and involved in around 28 cases of CPI-Maoist violence, including the murder of Bheemeshwara Rao at Alubaka in October 2020, and planting of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), landmines and spikes in the forest areas frequented by the combing parties in Venkatapuram and Wajedu Mandals in the past few years, said Mulugu Superintendent of Police (SP), Sangram Singh Patil.

Gaddam Madhukar and a courier were arrested during a vehicle-check by Police. Madhukar was suffering from Covid-19, had come to Warangal for the treatment with the help of the courier, a minor. Several cases against him were pending in the Police Stations of Bastar Division. Madhukar who hails from Kumaram Bheem Asifabad District in Telangana had joined the Sirpur Dalam (armed squad) of the then People’s War Group (PWG)) in 1999. The Naxal [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] outfit later shifted him to DKSZC and since then, he was involved in several offences including killing of Police personnel and snatching away their weapons. The CPI-Maoist courier went to Venkatapuram forest area in a car and was bringing Madhukar to Hanamkonda for admission in a hospital. When Police searched the vehicle at the check post, Madhukar was found hiding in the car’s boot. Police arrested both of them and seized INR 88,000 cash. Madhukar was later admitted to a hospital for treatment, said Warangal’s Commissioner of Police, Tarun Joshi. Madhukar informed to Police that a large number of senior Maoist cadres are suffering with COVID-19. But the CPI-Maoist is not allowing them to go outside for better treatment. The cadres in exceptional cases are allowed to go outside for getting better treatment, only after their health condition turns worse. Around 10-12 Naxals [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] have set ablaze one JCB and one tractor parked at a construction site of a bridge over Binja Nala at Lamkinand in Tokisood village of Patratu Police Station in Ramgarh District of Jharkhand on June 5, reports PrabhatKhabar. Two labourers identified as Raghunandan Prasad Mahato, a resident of Giridih District and Bhunesh Ram, a resident of Chauparan in Hazaribagh District were abused and injured by the Naxals and then fired in the air. Many labourers saved their lives by hiding in nearby forests. Naxals gave a pamphlet to a labourer identified as Munshi Lagnu Mahli to be handed over to their contracter. The engineers of the construction company said that no organization threatened them to stop work or seek levy. Acting on intelligence inputs about a gathering of armed CPI-Maoist cadres for carrying out subversive activities, a search and area domination operation was launched by SFs in bordering areas of Malkangiri and Koraput Districts in Odisha. When the combing operation was on in the jungle area near Kulabeda village, there was sudden unprovoked firing from the CPI-Maoist cadres. The SFs retaliated and started controlled firing after warning and appealing to the Maoists. However, the Maoists managed to flee the area taking advantage of the jungle and hilly terrain. After the exchange of fire, a search operation was conducted during which the arms and ammunition were seized from the area, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Rishikesh D Khilari. The gunfight took place in the wee hours at a forest near Minpa village under Chintagufa Police Station limits, when a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were out on a search operation, Sukma, Superintendent of Police (SP), Sunil Sharma, said, adding, the exchange of fire lasted for about one-and-a-half hours following which the rebels escaped into the forest. Later, the body of a male Maoist was recovered from the spot, whose identity is yet to be ascertained. Based on intelligence reports, CRPF personnel launched a combing operation in the forest and seized huge number of explosives, two pistols, 35 gelatin sticks, 50 detonators, batteries, electric wire, ropes, urea tiffins, 13 live bullets and other incriminating materials with the help of sniffing dogs. “A banner of CPI Maoist Baghuna Division was also recovered from the spot. It is suspected that the group could have hidden the arms and ammunition for any ambush,” said Mitu Roy, a CRPF official, adding that further investigation into the same is underway. According to sources, the Maoists were staying in the area for the last few days and were planning for a big ambush on Independence Day and ‘Kranti Divas’, which was foiled by the security personnel. The searches were carried out at the premises of an accused and two suspects, who are suspected to be involved in procurement and transportation of arms / ammunitions for the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Bihar and Jharkhand. The case is an outcome of an FIR of police post Karauna, Jehanabad, in which a major haul of arms and ammunition was recovered from the possession of one accused Parshuram Singh. The NIA had re-registered the case on June 17 this year and took over the investigation. The NIA said in a statement, “During the searches conducted today, several incriminating materials including hand written documents, Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] literature/books have been seized. Digital storage devices in the form of pen drives have also been seized. Further investigations in the case continue.”

The DGP said Dubasi was involved in many heinous Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] related violence including the 2009 Damanjodi Exchange of Fire (EOF) in which 10 Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel were killed, Jodamba EOF in 2018, Doraguda EOF in 2020, Theegalmetta EOF in 2021, Pebbampalli EOF in 2021, Januguda Ambush in 2012 in which four BSF personnel were killed and in Govindapalli land mine blast in 2010 in which 11 Police personnel died. Three Community Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres including two women cadres have been shot dead in an encounter during a gunfight near Tulsi Pahad (Hill) under Maithili Police limits in Malkangiri District of Odisha on October 12 (today), reports Kalinga TV. Reportedly, a combing operation by a joint team of District Voluntary Force (DVF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) had been launched following which the firing exchange took place, and as a result, two women Maoists along with one male Maoist cadre were killed, while others managed to escape from the area. Senior Police officials said, this is the second instance of fierce gun battle between the Maoists and SFs reported from the area in the past one week. As per reports, a team of Special Operation Group (SOG) personnel and District Voluntary Force (DVF), had launched a combing operation after getting inputs regarding the presence and movement of the Maoists in the region. On seeing the SFs, the Maoists opened fire on them. The SFs retaliated by firing back. It is suspected that the Maoists again regrouped near the spot where three of their cadres were recently gun downed by the SFs. Around 30 to 40 Maoists were present in the camp, sources said. The combing operation was launched by a joint team comprising Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Volunteer Force (DVF) Malkangiri after receipt of credible inputs regarding presence of the Maoists on October 14, 2021. However, an exchange of fire broke out between the SFs and Left-Wing Extremists (LWEs) on October 15. The slain Maoist was identified as Pramod Koda, whose body was recovered from Lathia Pahari along with an AK47 rifle, Police said. Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), operation, Sushil M Khopde said Lakhisarai Police launched a search and rescue operation following information that some Maoists were hiding in the forest area of Bhagatpur after abducting the son of a Public Distribution System (PDS) dealer. “At around 10pm, the STF team came under heavy firing by the Maoists and fired back in self-defense,” said Khopde, adding that one Maoist was killed in the exchange of fire that lasted for about one-and-a-half hours, following which, the rebels escaped into the forest. Search operations have been intensified in the area to trace the abducted person, the official said. Pidi Bazar Station House Officer (SHO), Prajesh Kumar Dubey said armed Maoists attacked the house of PDS dealer Bhagwat Prasad at Chaukara and abducted his son Deepak Prasad (24). Police unearthed as many as 110 booby traps set up by cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in the forests near Yarrampadu village in Cherla Mandal (administrative sub-division) in Bhadradri Kothagudem District of Telangana on November 3, reports Telangana Today. Circle Inspector (CI) of Police, B Ashok in a statement stated that Cherla Police, Special Party personnel and 141 Bn ‘A’ Coy Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel jointly carried out a combing operation in the forests and found the booby traps laid in the hillocks near Yarrampadu village. The Police team removed and seized over 500 iron and wooden spikes planted in 110 pits. Maoists threatened and forced villagers of Puttaparthi, Pesarlapadu, Nimmalagudem, Jettepadu and other villages along the Telangana-Chhattisgarh State border to dig pits to plant booby traps, he said. Maoists are setting up booby traps targetting the Police personnel. But the booby traps have been injuring and killing cattle and innocent tribal people when they unknowingly stepped on the traps. The rebels opened fire after being stopped by Police, and the Police had to retaliate with counter-firing, the SP added. “They (rebels) fled the spot after getting overpowered by our men. No casualties were reported during the encounter. Combing operations are being carried out across the district,” said SP Shekhar, adding that at least 100 rounds were fired during the encounter. Police sources said the rebels were armed with modern guns, but they had to retreat as they were outnumbered by security personnel. The Maoists build memorials [rebels cite them as Shaheed Smarak] as a tribute to their dead senior leaders and cadres to highlight their contribution to the banned outfit among the local masses in areas having their presence. Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava, said, “First time a team of Dantewada district reserve guards (DRG) traced three 'smarak', each separated by a distance of 3-4 kilometre. They were dismantled. These memorials were on the name of a hardcore Maoist leader Vinod Hemla who carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head and Gundadhur (carrying a bounty of Rs 5 lakh).” The SFs were out on operation on a tip-off about the movement of Maoists along the Dantewada-Sukma border in south Bastar. A significant cache of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), detonators, and other incriminating materials were recovered during an anti-Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) operations in Malkangiri District of Odisha on December 16, reports ommcomnews.com. The joint operation comprised personnel of the District Voluntary Force (DVF), Special Operation Group (SOG) and Border Security Force (BSF) and was carried out in the erstwhile cut-off area (Swabhiman Anchal) under Jodambo Police limits. The operation was carried out following the establishment of a new BSF company operating base (COB) at Ghanabeda, which received a tip-off on a Maoist dump near Nadmenjeri village. After receiving the input, a joint team was formed which carried out extensive searches and recovered the dump in a forested area of Nadmenjeri under Jantri Gram Panchayat under Jodambo Police limits, Superintendent of Police (SP) Prahlad Meena said. As many as five IEDs, three metres of Codex wire, three detonators, two batteries, iron scrap, Maoist literature, polythene sheets, lithium button cells, and several other Maoist materials were seized. “It is suspected that the explosives and other articles were intended to be target civilians and security forces,” Meena said.

Dantewada, Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava, said, "On a tip-off a team of Dantewada district reserve guards (DRG) was out on search operation. When the forces arrived close to the forested terrain of Gonderas near Aranpur, the rebels opened fire resulting into an exchange of fire. The forces later recovered two female bodies of the banned outfit from the encounter site." The slain bodies were identified as Hidme Kohrame, Mallanger ‘area committee member, (ACM)’ of Darbha Division and Pojje, head of Chetna Natya Mandli (CNM), the outfit's cultural troupe, in Nilawaya of Mallanger area committee. Kohrame and Pojje carried the reward of INR 500,000 and INR 100,000 respectively on their heads. Initially the case was lodged in a Jharkhand Police Station on November 11 this year. Later, on December 19 the case was taken over by the NIA. After taking over the case the anti-terror agency on December 29 conducted searches at 12 locations to gather evidence against the accused persons. Reportedly, on the basis of specific information, an intensive search and area domination was conducted by Malkangiri Police and BSF resulting in uncovering of one major Maoist dump near the jungle area in between Taber and Arlingpada village under Jantri Gram Panchayat (village level local self-Government institution). This led to the recovery and seizure of a large quantity of explosives, Maoist literature, medicines, and other incriminating articles. It is suspected that these articles were intended to make Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and to target civilians and Police Forces.
