On March 13, two police personnel were killed and four others injured in an attack on an anti-Naxalite police picket by leftwing insurgents, Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG) at Opalada village in Gajapati district. According to police sources, a group of estimated 30 Naxalites armed with sophisticated weapons including AK-47 rifles opened indiscriminate fir and fled with eight SLR guns, one carbine, one revolver and about 820 rounds of live ammunition. A massive combing operation has been launched to nab the assailants. The Naxalites are believed to be a part of the Srikakulam dalam of PWG.

The landmine was reportedly triggered by left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the People's War Group (PWG). According to police sources, a six-member police team headed by a Grey Hounds inspector was combing the area since April 16 for landmines and recovered as many as 13 mines planted on the roads criss-crossing the thick forests of Rampachodavaram. The police team was returning to Y Raghavaram police station in a jeep when the incident occurred.

Earlier, a leader of the People’s Guerrilla Army (PGA), while talking to newsmen during the week beginning May 6, 2001, in the Adilabad forests, had warned that the PWG would now begin targeting BJP and Telugu Desam leaders. Six left-wing extremists, Naxalites -- five of the People's War Group (PWG) and another of the Sangharsh Jan Mukti Morcha -- were arrested on May 29 as the police launched a massive combing operation after the attack on the Mali police station, Aurangabad district by the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) on May 27. The combing operation is continuing in the bordering areas of Palamu and Rohtas districts to arrest the Naxalites and recover the looted police weapons. The operation is being carried out jointly by Palamu and Aurangabad district police. The Bihar government has taken the attack on Mali police station very seriously and in order to strengthen the police stations in the Naxalite affected areas, it has decided to fence all such police stations with barbed wires. Meanwhile, another police personnel who was seriously injured in the May 27 Mali police station attack succumbed to his injuries at the Patna Medical College Hospital.

Six GRP personnel were injured while trying to resist the Naxalites. A senior police official said this was the first time when Naxalites looted firearms from GRP personnel in a running train. The Naxalites then blasted the unit using a Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The main building of the plant and machinery is reported to have suffered extensive damage. Official sources said the incident took place when the police, who launched a massive manhunt to arrest the Naxalites responsible for the December 24 blast, came across seven Naxalites taking shelter near a hill. The police asked them to surrender, but the Naxalties hurled a bomb and opened fire forcing the police to retaliate. In the ensuing encounter, four Naxalites were killed while three others managed to escape. Three of the encounter victims have been identified as G Chandrasekhar, a teacher in a Government school, B Surender, cleaner in a local ESI hospital, and auto driver B Shankar. It is perhaps for the first time in the history of the Naxalite movement that two Government employees, including a teacher, have been killed by the police in encounter. The family members of the teacher, however, alleged that they have been killed in a fake enounter. On the other hand, the District police chief claimed that the teacher has been an activist of the PWG and two cases were pending against him in connection with the killing of two police personnel. Moreover, he was also functioning as a courier for some top leaders of the PWG, the police chief said.
