According to Kantipuronline, the three major political parties—UCPN-M, Nepali Congress (NC) and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) on July 20 filed their own candidature in the Parliament secretariat. Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda filed his nomination for the election of the Prime Minister. From CPN-UML side its Chairman Jhalanath Khanal filed his candidacy. And for NC vice chairman and parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudel filed his nomination. Kantipuronline reports that none of the two contenders of the Prime Ministerial post— Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Nepali Congress (NC) Parliamentary Party Leader Ramchandra Poudel—could secure the required 300 votes in the runoff election held on July 23. Maoist Chairman Dahal garnered 241 votes in his favour, and 113 votes were cast against him while 218 lawmakers stayed away from the voting. Out of 599, altogether 572 lawmakers were present at today's House session. Like wise, the proposal to elected Poudel as PM garnered only 123 votes, 241 votes were against him and 214 lawmakers remained neutral. The Parliament had decided to hold the re-election after none of the contestants vying for the prime minister's post could not muster the required clear majority (300 votes) on July 21 election, while the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) candidate Jhalanath Khanal pulled back at the last moment as per his party’s decision to continue the candidacy only if he could draw the support a two-thirds majority (401) votes.
