A bandh (general shutdown strike) was observed in large parts of the Jungle Mahal on April 8 following a call by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), prompting the Bengal Government to reassess the situation in Jhargram, West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura Districts which make up the region, reports The Telegraph. Reports from the Districts suggested that most pockets of the Jungle Mahal wore a deserted look from April 8 morning, which indicated that people at large did not want to take chances and preferred staying indoors. The impact was maximum in Jhargram, where three blocks, including Jhargram, witnessed a total bandh-like situation, said a Police source. “The people of the Jungle Mahal do not want to take chances with the Maoists as there had been instances of the insurgents attacking people defying their diktat.… This fear had vanished in the past few years. We need to assess why people chose to play it safe this time and stayed indoors,’’ said the senior Police officer. The Maoists had called a strike in the Jungle Mahal on April 8 to protest the State Government’s move to appoint former Maoists as junior constables or special home guards. The posters that were put up in different parts of the four Districts claimed that their former comrades were ‘‘criminals’’ and also bore threats that those not observing the strike would be killed.

Gadchiroli, Superintendent of Police (SP), Ankit Goel said that the suspected Maoists were arrested when a Police team patrolling in the area saw them putting up pro-Maoist banners at Kamalapur, provoking the tribal population to protest against the State Government and the Police for – what they claimed to be – ‘anti-people’ policies. The banners also appealed to the locals to observe ‘Martyrs Week’ from July 28 to August 3 to commemorate the death anniversary of rebel leader and founder Charu Majumdar. Maoists urged the people to observe Mazumdar’s death anniversary and also pay tribute to all ‘martyrs’ — including ‘Central Committee (CC)’ member Milind Teltumbde, who was killed in an encounter in Gadchiroli in November 2021 — and all those who laid their lives in the ‘People’s movement’. “It is alleged that the three suspected Maoists arrested were providing logistics support to the Maoists. All the three have been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act [UAPA]. We are finding out whether the doctor Uike was doing all this voluntarily or was forced to do it,” the Gadchiroli SP added.

Police intensified the poster campaign against four wanted cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), suspected to be members of an action team of the outlawed outfit, in various parts of Mulugu District of Telangana on December 10, reports The Hindu. Acting on specific information about the movement of a Maoist action team in the restive Telangana-Chhattisgarh border region, the Police launched a poster campaign announcing prize money for giving information about the elusive Maoist action team members. The ‘wanted posters’ with the pictures of four Maoist action team members surfaced at different places, including at the bus stations in Mulugu and elsewhere in the tribal majority district, on December 10. The posters captioned “Action Team Samacharam Maaku – Bahumathi Meeku” sprang up mainly in the forest fringe areas spanning the Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) affected border region, sources said. The posters contained the phone numbers of the District Police officials as well as the Inspectors of Police of Mulugu, Pasra, Eturunagaram and Venkatapuram circles with an appeal to give information about the movement of the Maoist action team members by calling Dial 100. Similar posters had also been stuck in different parts of Jayashankar Bhupalpally District as part of the multi-pronged strategy of the Police department to track down the elusive Maoists in the volatile forested region straddling the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border.
