SFs recovered a China-made M-20 pistol, four grenades, two remote-controlled devices, two detonators and some incriminating documents were recovered from the two militants.

The Rajnandgaon District Police on January 4 seized large quantities of arms, ammunition, wires, tents and other materials used by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) from the forests of Kandhura at the Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra border in the District, reports The Pioneer. The recoveries included a 12 bore gun, bullets, electronic detonator, solar plates, mobile handsets, glucose bottles, torch, wire bundles, shoes, tents, backpacks, blankets, butter papers used for printing and Maoist literatures along with banners and few other things.

Security Forces (SFs) killed six Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), including four top leaders, near Jimulgatta, in Aheri tehsil (revenue unit) of Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra, on January 20, and recovered all their bodies, reports The Times of India. The encounter with at least 12 Maoists against the elite C-60 Commandos lasted for half-an-hour. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Gadchiroli, Ravindra Kadam, said the encounter was an intelligence-based operation. He further said "Two more Naxals are likely to have suffered serious injuries, but their cadres took them away." Among the senior cadres killed were Muneshwar Lakda alias Shankar, ‘divisional committee member of Aheri Local Guerilla Squad’, Chandrayya Kodape alias Vinod, ‘commander of Aheri dalam’, Vinod's wife Geeta Usendi, ‘deputy commander of a platoon’, Mohan Kowase alias Tulsi, ‘deputy commander of Aheri dalam’, Jhuru Mattami, ‘body guard to a senior cadre’ and Sunita Kodape, ‘member of Sironcha Local Organisation Squad’. All the Maoists were in uniform. The SFs recovered two SLRs, a couple of .303, an 8mm single barrel gun and ammunition. A radio set, LWE literature, water bottles, snacks and some food materials too were recovered.

In a joint operation led by Counter Insurgency Force and Police, about eight kilograms of explosives and landmine-making equipment were recovered from a forest in Bagmundi Police Station area in Purulia District in the night of January 28, reports expressindia.com. The Police are yet to find out if the explosives had been recently dumped or it was done long ago. Pamphlets, Maoist literature and two diaries were also recovered from the area, said Police. “Two iron pipes inks and markers and apparel of men and women were also recovered from the area,” said Nilratan Ghosh, Officer-in-Charge of Bagmundi Police Station. No arrests have been made so far, but there was information from Special Intelligence Branch to all the District Police Stations that a 12-member squad of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) has infiltrated.

People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of CPI-Maoist, has imposed a ban on use of music systems during marriage function to protect tribal culture and traditional instruments. Claiming that the ban has the support of Zila Radhi Pahda Samiti, a traditional tribal organization, the outfit said people are not engaging traditional drummers and flute players during marriages because of the use of these sound systems and they deprive local artists of their traditional profession and poses a threat to their instruments. Police sources said suspected members of PLFI recently pasted posters at various places and burnt a sound system installed foe the marriage of the son of one Vishwanath Oraon in Bhandra area in Lohardaga District. The posters announced that modern musical system would be burnt down and the users would have to pay a fine of Rs 25,000. A police officer, quoting a villager from Bhandra who was present when the armed rebels attacked the house, said: "PLFI leader Budheshwar Oraon himself led the attack on the house of Vishwanath Oraon, burnt down the sound system and warned his family members not to play film songs as it was against tribal culture."

Bokaro Police on January 30 sent three persons to jail after they were arrested from Pachmo village near Jhumra hills for planting explosives which were triggered by the Maoists on January 20 injuring 11 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers, reports The Telegraph. The arrestees were identified as Loknath Mahto, a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre, Dhaneshwar Ravidas and Sohan Argaria. Mahto was arrested on January 29 from his house at Pachmo under Mahuatand Police Station area. Bokaro Superintendent of Police (SP) Kuldeep Dwivedi told that Loknath’s arrest was a big success as he had given vital information that would lead to more arrests. A group of about 15 armed members of Galikonda area committee of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) blasted a coffee godown of the Andhra Pradesh Forest Development Corporation at Pedavalasa in GK Veedhi mandal (administrative unit) in Visakhapatnam District on May 11 night, reports The Hindu. The roof of one room of the godown was blown off and walls were damaged due to the blast. Some implements for coffee collection and furniture were also damaged. The attack on the coffee godown took place several hours after Superintendent of Police G. Srinivas and other officials conducted the Satbhavana Yatra at Rallagedda, a Maoist stronghold, which is about 16 km from Pedavalasa. Two pamphlets left by the Galikonda area committee and the Adivasi Rytu Coolie Sangham and Viplava Mahila Sangham at Bodidemullu temple, one km away from the coffee godown urged the people to boycott the “fake” Panchayat elections (expected to be conducted in a few months) and demanded the government to stop the Operation Green Hunt; attacks against the Girijans by the “hired” forces of the government; harassment of the Girijans after branding them as Maoist sympathisers; illegal arrests and fake encounters after raiding the villages at midnight. According to information received here, Krishna, an important member of the Galikonda area committee, was among those who blasted the coffee godown.

The encounter ensued following the Maoists firing at the joint patrol team of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Police during the routine combing operation on the hilly terrain in the western side of the village. "The forces retaliated and the Maoists fled after nearly 45 minutes of encounter during which about 50 rounds were fired from both sides," said superintendent of police (rural) Devendra Thakur. An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) weighing around 1.5kg, seven detonators, three gelatin rods, 150 metre electric wire, a nine mm pistol, two kilogram of unused raw gunpowder, camera, radio, uniforms and Maoist literature were found from the transit camp.

The Police said one Gangadharan of Vijayarengapuram started a coaching centre for competitive and civil services examinations at Karivalamvanthanallur in Tirunelveli District a few months ago, in which one Prabhakaran was the principal and Rajaram was his deputy. They allegedly took hefty amounts ranging from INR 70,000 to INR 300,000 from foreign job aspirants by organising a ‘job fair’ on the coaching centre premises, but failed to fulfil their promise. A couple of affected job-seekers filed complaints with the Karivalamvanthanallur Police. During the search conducted on July 14 at the coaching centre and also at the residence of Rajaram, who was a former State office-bearer of Anti-Imperialist Movement, the Police recovered pamphlets and books allegedly supporting Maoists and extremism, which prompted them to alert their higher-ups and also the Q Branch.

The Security Force personnel were on anti-Maoist operations for the last two days in interior parts of Gangalur after they received information about the Maoists hiding in Kurcholi and Bodlapusnar areas. The deceased was identified as Hemla Munna (29), a member of military company II of the CPI-Maoist. The personnel of bomb disposal squad destroyed the IEDs at the spot. Investigation was on to ascertain whether the camp was of the Odisha Maoist Party (OMP) of Sabyasachi Panda or of the CPI-Maoist.

The Maoists have accused the duo of hatching a conspiracy to handover Gandhamardan hills, supposed to have huge bauxite reserves, to foreign companies for their own monetary gains. One of the two messages, displayed in an under-construction restaurant in Paikmal town, less than 200 metres from the Paikmal Police Station, charged Bariha of exploiting poor people in the name of caste. The suspected Maoists were running away into the forests in Gorna village when the Security Forces intercepted them. Those arrested were identified as Kunjam Sainu (23) Kunjam Aaytu (25) and Modiyam Laxman (20), members of Maoist cultural wing Chetna Natya Manch and two other minors said to be members of the Maoist children's group, Bal Sangham. Maoist banners, posters, pamphlets and anklets were also recovered from their possession. A case under the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act has been registered against them.

A group of Maoists cadres, including women, stormed into Padia, in the early hours and entered the block office building after breaking the lock, Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP) Akhileswar Singh said. The Maoists set the building on fire before triggering a powerful blast, causing extensive damage to the structure, he said, adding that no one was harmed in the attack. A poster found from the site stated that the attack was in protest against an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in September this year (2013) in which around 13 Maoists had been killed, police said, adding that the poster also sought a halt to anti-Maoist operation and withdrawal of Border Security Force (BSF) from the region.
