SFs arrested an Anti-Talks Faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-ATF) militant, identified as Hemakanta Changmai, from Lekhapani in Tinsukia District on January 2. An AK-81 rifle, 162 rounds of ammunition, two hand grenades and INR 43,750 in cash were recovered from him. The arrested militant revealed that ULFA-ATF ‘Vice Chairman’ Paresh Baruah was in the Taka-based camp of the group in Myanmar from January to October last year where at least 250 cadres of the outfit are currently undergoing training.

Gurumayum Khugamani Sharma alias Inao alias Nanao alias Bimol was arrested from Southern side of Palace Gate traffic point in Imphal East District. He confessed that working as an OWG of PLA since 2009. Police further revealed that the device was handed over to him by one Robertson of the PLA on January 14 for planting at various places to disrupt the Republic Day 2012 celebration as well as the conduct of 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly on January 28. The outfit planned to plant the devices in Imphal city area. However, the device was unable to plant because of tight security, the officer alleged.

Sub-divisional Police officer Modhunimai said they first arrested a militant identified as Seram Sanatomba and on his information the other four were arrested. Two hand-grenades were also seized from them. Modhunimai said that they were involved in hurling a bomb at the house of a woman candidate, W. Shyama, and sent an extortion notice to Irrigation and Flood Control (IFC) Minister N. Biren. They also tried to corner lucrative contract works in the IFC department and get big loans from the District Industrial Centre. Police arrested a GNLA cadre identified as Julius N Marak from the Goreng coal mine in Shallang in West Khasi Hills District. A crude bomb was recovered from his possession. Police informed that a group of nine GNLA cadres led by Savio Marak ‘area commander’ of Khasi Hills entered the coal-rich area of Shallang with an aim to abduct some coal traders of the area. However, the GNLA cadres were spotted by the Police who were present in the area. The Police team, however, did not fire on the militants as several coal labourers were working in the coal mine. Taking advantage, the militants fled from the scene even as SFs managed to arrest Julius who was hiding in a coal quarry. He was taken to Shallang Police Station where he confessed that he was a GNLA cadre and was involved in many acts of crime.

While the ‘home secretary’ was arrested from Thenga Loubuk at Khurai Chingangbam Leikai, his wife identified as Memton alias Ing, was arrested later from an unspecified location. Two Chinese hand grenades, one .32 pistol, two magazines, two live rounds, 80 extortion notes of URF and a personal computer set were recovered from Memton. Acting on the disclosure of the couple, four other cadres of URF were also arrested. The four other cadres have been identified as Ningombam Amarchand alias Boy, Ngangkham Ranjan alias Ibungo, Ngangkham Rocky alias Bungcha and Ngangkham Khagemba alias Laba. One .9 mm pistol containing two live rounds, 100 extortion notes of URF, two Chinese hand grenades with detonators and a mobile handset were recovered from the possession of Ranjan.

A top cadre of United National Liberation Front (UNLF), identified as Khwairakpam Romesh was arrested by Security Forces (SFs) from Ningombam Phuramakhong in Imphal West District on March 9. One .9 mm pistol along with a magazine containing two live rounds was seized from his possession. It was revealed that Nanao joined UNLF in 2008 and got basic military training in Myanmar and worked under the command of one Wanglen. Based on the disclosure made by the militant, Police on March 10 alleged that he was among the UNLF cadres who transported about 230 AK-47 and 56 rifles for National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) in December 2009. He was also involved in an ambush on SFs in Ukhrul District in 2009, Police said.
