A Dhaka court on February 1 started its trial against 11 alleged militants over killing of eight people during a bank heist in Ashulia, outside the capital Dhaka city in 2015, reports The Daily Star. Ten of the accused, now in jail, were produced before the court while the other is absconding. According to the charge sheet, all the accused are alleged members of banned militant outfits Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) and Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).On April 21, 2015, armed militants shot eight people dead and injured several others in Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited in Ashulia, before leaving with BDT 3.5 million.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on February 2 sentenced Obaidul Haque Taher (66) and Ataur Rahman Nani (62) of Netrakona District to death for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, reports The Daily Star. The court found them guilty in four out of six charges brought against them. It gave them death penalty in two charges; imprisonment until death in two others and acquitted them from two charges. Taher was the commander of Netrakona Razakar Bahini, an auxiliary force of the Pakistan army in 1971, while Nani was a member of that force. The Tribunal said that it is an undisputed and settled fact that 3 million people laid down their lives during the Bangladesh's War of Liberation in 1971.

Dhaka High Court on February 11 upheld the death sentences of three Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B) cadres for grenade attack in 2004, reports New Age. The bench confirmed the death sentences of HuJI-B leader Mufti Abdul Hannan and his associates Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul and Delwar Hossain alias Ripon. It also upheld life-terms of Mahibullah alias Mafizur Rahman and Mufti Moinuddin alias Abu Jandal.On May 21, 2004, three people including an Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police were killed while over 70 others injured in the grenade attack launched after the Jumma prayers at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal in Sylhet District. On December 23, 2008, a Sylhet District Court pronounced the verdicts in the case filed for the grenade explosion.

A court in Rajbari District on February 28 sentenced Mufti Mohammad Kutubullah (35), a militant of Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to five years’ imprisonment in a case filed under the Explosive Substance Act, reports Dhaka Tribune. The Supreme Court (SC) on March 8 upheld the death sentence awarded to Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) central executive committee member Mir Quasem Ali for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, reports Dhaka Tribune. The SC upheld death penalty for Mir Quasem in one charge. However, it acquitted him of three other charges. On November 2, 2014, Mir Quasem was given death penalty by the International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) for playing a key role behind the formation of Al-Badr and leading atrocities in torture camps. Mir Quasem appealed against the judgment on November 30, 2014 seeking acquittal.

The Supreme Court (SC) on April 10 again deferred the hearing on a petition filed by death-row convict Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) amir (chief) Motiur Rahman Nizami seeking review of the top court’s verdict that upheld his sentence for war crimes until May 3, Dhaka Tribune. A four-member bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha set the new date granting a defense petition. The hearing date was earlier deferred on April 3 when the defense sought time citing personal inconvenience of their chief counsel Khandaker Mahbub Hossain. Mahbub appeared before the court and sought time again. The court told the chief defense counsel that it would not entertain any more adjournment on May 3.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) amir (chief) Motiur Rahman Nizami (75), the kingpin of notorious Al-Badr force and second top collaborator of the Pakistani occupation forces after former JeI amir Ghulam Azam, was executed at Dhaka Central Jail at 12:10am on May 11, reports Dhaka Tribune. On October 29, 2014, International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) sentenced Nizami to death for planning, instigating and executing genocide, murder, rape and deportation among other crimes in Pabna and Dhaka during the 1971 Liberation War. Another accused was given a life term and two others three years' jail each while two were acquitted by the court. The condemned convicts are Borhan Uddin, Saiful alias Al Amin, Mahfuzur Islam alias Sumon alias Jamil, Jashim Uddin, Palash alias Sohel Rana and Mintu Prodhan. Ukil Hasan was handed life term while Abdul Baten and Shahjahan Jamadar three years' jail each. Mozammel Haque and Babul Sarder were acquitted.On April 21, 2015, a gang of 8-10 people aged between 25 and 40 looted BDT 35 lakh from a branch of Bangladesh Commerce Bank in Ashulia Industrial Area on the outskirts of Dhaka city in broad daylight. They attacked bank officials, clients and locals with sharp weapons, fired shots and hurled crude bombs while escaping the scene, leaving seven people dead. A mob later beat one of the robbers dead and handed another over to police.

The rejection cleared the way of war crimes convict Mir Quasem Ali’s execution. On November 2, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) handed down the capital punishment on Quasem over crimes against humanity. The Appellate Division upheld the verdict on March 8 and released the full text on June 6, hours after which the ICT-2 had issued a death warrant against him. Later on June 19, Quasem submitted the petition to the SC through his lawyers seeking review of the verdict.

Interrogators have already gleaned some “important information” about Avijit murder from Sabur, Monirul Islam, chief of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said on September 4. Sabur, a madrasa (Islamic Seminary) student of Jatrabari (Dhaka), used his knowledge of Arabic to disseminate distorted religious interpretations among new recruits at the training camps of the banned militant outfit ABT, he said. “Through the distorted religious views, he convinced the attackers that killing the publishers would not be a sin,” he added.

A Dhaka court on November 8 accepted charges against banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) 'chief' Mufti Jasimuddin Rahmani and nine others in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, reports Daily Star. Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court took cognizance of the charges and fixed November 27, 2016 for hearing charge framing against the accused.Earlier on July 26 this year, the Home Ministry sent an approval letter to the court regarding this. The nine others are: Kazi Mohammad Rezwan, 30, Naimul Hasan, 28, Ali Azad, 28, Jahidul Islam, 27, Junnun Shikder, 27, Amirul Islam, 25, Abu Hanif, 23, Saiful Islam, 21, and Al Asadullah alias Abdullah alias Mohammad Piyas, 19. Rahmani, Abu Hanif and Piyas are in jail while Azad is on bail and the rest are absconding.The case was filed with Mohammadpur Police Station in 2013, after they were arrested from Katashur area, for planning to gain control of a part of the country and conduct armed jihad (struggle). Rahmani, the organisation's spiritual leader, was arrested from Barguna the same year and was shown arrested in a case filed over the killing of blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider in February 2013. On December 31, 2015 Rahmani, 45, was found guilty of provoking Rajib's murder through his sermons and was sentenced to five years' imprisonment. Detectives pressed charges against Rahmani and nine others in 2014.
