A Kishoreganj District Court on April 8 sentenced United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) leader Ranjan Chowdhury alias Major Ranjan (46), former General Secretary of Dhubri District unit of ULFA and his Bangladeshi aide Pradip Marak (57) to life term imprisonment, reports The Independent. The Court also fined the duo BTK 20000 each. On July 17, 2010, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Ranjan Chowdhury and his Bangladeshi aide from Bhairab sub-District in Kishoreganj District. The elite forcer also recovered one pistol, one revolver, four handmade bombs and some bomb making materials from Ranjan’s hideout at Lakshmipur village in Bhairab. RAB filed four separate cases, including for intrusion, arms, explosives and terrorism, against the duo with Bhairab Police Station.

The Prosecution on April 19 pressed five charges against eight Al-Badr men for their alleged involvement in crimes against humanity committed in Jamalpur District during the Liberation War, reports The Daily Star. The charges include murder, abduction and torture. The crimes were committed in between April 22 and December 11, 1971 in Jamalpur District. The charges were brought for the eights' alleged involvement in nine criminal incidents. The accused are Ashraf Hossain (64), Professor Sharif Ahammed (71), Abdul Mannan (66), Abdul Bari (62), Harun (58), Abul Hashem (65), Shamsul Haque (75) and AKM Yusuf Ali, 83. Shamsul and Yusuf are in jail while the rest are absconding.

A Dhaka court on April 30 indicted 65 leaders and cadres Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) in a case of vandalism and arson at Motijheel area in Dhaka city, reports Dhaka Tribune. Metropolitan Magistrate Tariq Moinul Islam Bhuiyan framed the charges against the accused and fixed June 10 to start the trial. On November 5, 2012, the JeI-ICS leaders and cadres brought out a procession demanding release of their top leaders who were arrested on charges of War Crimes. A clash occurred between them and Police that day, where at least 50 people were injured. On November 13, 2012, Sub-Inspector Mofizur Rahman submitted the charge sheet against them at the court in Dhaka city.

Detectives on May 6 pressed murder charges against Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and 37 others for their alleged involvement in a petrol bomb attack on a bus in Dhaka city's Jatrabari area on January 23 in which one person was killed and 30 others were injured, reports The Daily Star. According to the charge sheet, Khaleda masterminded the arson attack on the passenger bus. This is the first time Khaleda, also a former Prime Minister, has been charged in a criminal case. Currently she stands accused in five corruption cases and three defamation suits. In addition, she is facing four other cases over recent blockade violence.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on May 13 sent three War Crimes suspects to jail who were arrested from Keshabpur sub-District of Jessore District, reports New Age. The arrested persons, Mohamad Bellal Hossain (75), Mohamad Akram Hossain (60) and Wajihar Morol (64), are among 11 War Crimes suspects against whom the Tribunal issued arrest warrant on May 12. All the 11 suspects were found as associates of Shakhawat Hossain, a former Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) lawmaker from Keshabpur in committing crimes against humanity in 1971. Police said that they had been trying to arrest the remaining eight suspects.

36 Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders including its standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah and its joint-secretary generals Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Amanullah Aman were charge sheeted on May 14 in a case for petrol bomb explosion in Mirpur area of Dhaka city on January 25, reports UNB. According to case records, BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) activists, as part of enforcing a hartal (general strike) called by the 20-partry alliance, exploded petrol bomb and tried to set fire on vehicles in front of Sony Cinema Hall in Mirpur area of Dhaka city on January 25. The International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) on May 20 sentenced Mahidur Rahman (84) and Ashraf Hossain Chutu (65) life imprisonment for their involvement in crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971, reports The Daily Star. Mahidur and Chutu were active members of Muslim League (ML) who later turned into Peace Committee leaders and subsequently the leaders of Razakar. The tribunal found Mahidur and Chutu guilty on two of the three charges leveled against them. The tribunal awarded the duo imprisonment until death on the first charge. The verdict on the second charge sentenced them to a five-year prison term. The third charge was dropped as the duo had already been sentenced under the 1972 Collaborators Act on the same charge. The duo was arrested on September 16, 2014, in a criminal case. Later, they were shown arrested in the War Crimes case on November 24, 2014, and on December 11, 2014, they were indicted on three charges.

Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judges Court issued the arrest warrants after accepting the charges against 36 suspects, including 33 BNP men. Dhaka High Court (HC) on July 23 rejected bail petition of Samiun Rahman alias Ibn Hamdan, a Bangladeshi origin British citizen, who came here for allegedly recruiting jihadists for the Islamic State (IS), in a case filed for conspiring to establish an IS group in Bangladesh, reports The Daily Star. Additional Attorney General Murad Reza told the court that Samiun could not get bail since there were some serious allegations against him. Citing from the charge sheet, he told the court that Samiun entered Bangladesh to recruit and motivate young people to join IS for fighting in Syria. Samiun was made accused under the Anti-Terrorism Act.On September 28, 2014, Samiun was arrested in Dhaka city’s Kamalapur following information from some people arrested earlier over alleged links with militancy.

Charges have been pressed against Tangail Municipality Mayor Shahidur Rahman Khan Mukti and two of his close aides in an arms case on August 12, reports Daily Star. Sub-Inspector Nazmul Hasan of Tangail Detective Branch (DB) of Police, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Judicial Magistrate's Court in Tangail District. The other two charge-sheeted accused are Kader Joarder and Nasiruddin Nuru. Police recovered two USA-made pistols, two magazines and three bullets from Kader's house, said Golam Mahfizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Tangail DB Police. During interrogation, Kader told Police that Nuru gave him the pistols in presence of the mayor at his (mayor's) College Para residence in Tangail town, a few months ago.

The Speedy Trial Tribunal in Dhaka city on December 31 sentenced two youths to death and jailed six others to various terms, in the first ever case of the killing of self-styled atheist blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider Shovon (26) in 2013, reports New Age. The tribunal sentenced Rezwanul Azad Rana and Faisal Bin Nayeem Dwip to death and fined them BDT 50,000. The tribunal also awarded life term to Maksudul Hasan Anik and fined him BDT 10,000. The tribunal jailed Ehsan Reza Rumman, Nayeem Sikdar Erad and Nafis Imtiaz for ten years each and fined them BDT 5,000 each for participating in the crime. Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) ‘chief’ Mufti Mohamad Jashim Uddin Rahmani was jailed for five years and fined BDT 2,000 for his sermons which had inspired the intolerant young men to attack the architect. It also jailed Sadman Yasir Mahmud for three years and fined him BDT 2,000 for his involvement in crime.On February 15, 2013, the attackers hacked to death the secular blogger, who also an activist of Gonojagoron Mancha (People's Resurgence Platform) organised for justice for war crimes, in front of his house in the Dhaka city’s Mirpur area.
