The Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court in Dhaka on April 20 sentenced 'military commander' of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Ataur Rahman Sunny, to 37 years' rigorous imprisonment in a case for possessing firearms and ammunition, reports Daily Star. The court also heard a case against him under the Explosive Substances Act but reserved its verdict. Sunny pleaded guilty in both the cases. In his statement, Sunny said that he possessed firearms, ammunition and bomb making materials for establishing Islamic rule in the country. He also possessed explosives seized from his rented house at East Bashabo in Dhaka, which he intended to use for destructive activities, he added.

Minhaz alias Shaon, the Comilla district ‘commander’ of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), confessed on June 4 to the killing of Monir Hossain Sagar, a writer of Tangail, in the year 2000 at the directive of the outfit’s chief Abdur Rahman for making "indecent remarks" about Allah and the prophet in his books, according to Daily Star. Making a confessional statement in the presence of Shafique Anwar, Dhaka Metropolitan magistrate, he also admitted to having attacked writer Humayun Azad at the instance of Abdur Rahman. Minhaz, arrested in Chittagong on April 26, also said that the JMB ‘military commander’ Ataur Rahman Sunny led the operations while he and two other operatives, Shamim and Shahid alias Shad, took part in it. He further admitted that the outfit’s cadres looted the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee office at Bhulta in Narayanganj in 2004.

A Jamalpur court on June 8 placed two Majlish-e-Shura (highest decision-making body) members of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Salahuddin and Hafez Mahmud, on a seven-day remand in the Dr Gani Gomes killing case, according to Daily Star. Dr Gomez, a converted Christian of Duanipara village under Sadar sub-district of Jamalpur district, was killed at Hazipur Bazaar on the night of September 18, 2004. JMB leaders Salahuddin and Hafez Mahmud have reportedly confessed to the killing and also told the court that JMB cadres, Shahin of Thakurgaon and Belal of Rajshahi, had also taken part in the killing.

The Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 in Dhaka on November 9 awarded death sentences to two members of the Majlish-e-Shura (highest decision-making body) of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Salauddin alias Salehin of Narayanganj and Rafiq Hassan alias Hafez Mahmud of Jamalpur, in connection with the killing of Abdul Gani alias Joseph Mandal, a medicine trader of Melandah in Jamalpur, in September 2004. According to Daily Star, following the verdict, the convicted JMB cadres warned judge Shahed Nooruddin of death saying that "their court" has already sentenced the judge to death and the order would be executed shortly. The convicts reportedly said that those who followed the "worldly laws" are not real judges. The convicts can appeal to the High Court against the verdict within 30 days from the day of receipt of the judgment copy.

The Supreme Court (SC) on November 28 upheld the death sentences passed on the six militant leaders of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) for killing two judges in Jhalakathi, reports Daily Star. A seven-member full bench of the SC headed by Chief Justice J. R. Mudassir Hossain rejected the appeal of the militants seeking permission to appeal against a High Court judgement upholding the death sentences. The convicted militants, including JMB chief Abdur Rahman, his deputy Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai, Majlish-e-shura (the highest decision-making body) members Ataur Rahman Sunny, Abdul Awal, and Khaled Saifullah, suicide bomber Iftekhar al Mamun, will have to petition the president for mercy. In the absence of the mercy petition within the stipulated time, the jail authorities will issue death warrants fixing dates for their executions. Senior assistant judges, Jagannath Pandey and Sohel Ahmed, were killed in a suicide bomb attack at Purba Chadkati in the Jhalakathi town on November 14, 2005, in the wake of a series of bombings by the militants across the country.

Two other JMB cadres, Tashnim and Shoeb, however, managed to escape. On December 19-morning, police arrested an ehsar (full-time cadre) of the JMB, Talimul Hossain, when he came to Gazipur district jail with Nahid and Shoeb, Kalihati subdistrict ‘commander’, to give foods to his brother Hassan and two other prisoners, Saidul Munshi Imon and Hosne Ara Swapna.
