A court in Tangail, on January 10, placed two militants of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) on seven-day fresh remand. Police had arrested Abdur Rahman Alal alias Fahad and Mohammed Saiful Islam alias Russell, along with a huge quantity of arms, ammunition and detonators from a bus on Rabna bypass in Tangail on December 29. Police produced the JMB cadres before the first class magistrate's court asking for a 15-day fresh remand, but the court granted a seven-day remand. According to Daily Star, during interrogation, the JMB cadres confessed that they had been executing orders from JMB commanders Hassan and Rakib.

A court in the capital Dhaka on April 23 suspended the arrest warrants issued against the former Prime Minister and Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister and AL leader Mohammad Nasim and AL activist Kiron alias Abdul Malek on April 22. Hasina is accused of involvement in the death of four political activists during street violence on October 28, 2006 -- a charge she has denied. Metropolitan Magistrate Mir Ali Reza passed the order following a petition submitted by the investigation officer of the case seeking further investigation and suspension of operation of the arrest warrants. The court also directed the investigating officer to probe the matter and fixed May 28 for submission of the probe report.

Ten people died and several others were injured on April 14, 2001, when bombs exploded at Ramna Batamul during the Bengali New Year's celebration. Hannan had made a confessional statement on November 19, 2006, regarding his involvement in the incident.

The High Court on May 7 ordered the government to explain within four weeks why it shall not be directed to allow Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to move freely. Responding to a habeas corpus petition, it also directed the telecom authorities to restore the land phone connection at Khaleda’s residence, provided that she is not in arrears with bills. Abdul Wadud Khondkar, a Supreme Court lawyer, had filed the petition on May 31 seeking a court directive for the government to end the reported confinement of Khaleda, desist from pressing her to leave the country, reconnect her phone line and allow relations, friends and well-wishers to visit her at the cantonment residence.

Former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) minister Brig Gen (retd) Hannan Shah was arrested along with his son Shah Rezaul Hannan from his residence at Mohakhali in the capital Dhaka on May 14 on charge of extortion, reports Daily Star. Shortly after the arrest, police produced both before a Gazipur court which placed them on a five-day remand. This is the first ever arrest of an former army officer turned politician since the interim government started a crackdown on corrupt high profile politicians, businessmen and professionals. Hannan had recently criticised the interim government's move to send the former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia into exile.

Badar Aziz Uddin of Cox's Bazaar, one of the many injured in the attack, filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, Dhaka. The attack that occurred in the Dhaka's Bangabandhu Avenue killed 23 persons. The other accused include Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar, former BNP parliamentarians Amanullah Aman, Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, Mirza Abbas, Mosaddek Ali Falu, Barkat Ullah Bulu, Salahuddin Ahmed, Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu, Helaluzzaman Talukder Lalu, Krishak Dal General Secretary Shahjahan Mian, Islami Bank Managing Director Nurul Islam, and businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun. Both were arrested on corruption charges from their residence in the Dhaka cantonment area. While Zia’s lawyers asked for bail, the government maintained that due to the sensitivity of the case, she should be confined to jail till the investigation is completed. The Metropolitan Special Tribunal-9 in Dhaka on October 30 sentenced the detained former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar to 17 years' rigorous imprisonment (RI) for possessing illegal firearms and ammunition at his residence in capital Dhaka, reports Daily Star. Babar was convicted for keeping an unlicensed revolver and 25 bullets of .32 bore rifle in his possession. The court awarded 10 years' RI for possessing illegal firearms under Section 19(A) of the Arms Act, and seven years' RI for possessing ammunition under Section 19 (F) of the same Act. In his observation, the judge said the accused who held the portfolio of state minister for home and also a lawmaker violated the law for keeping unlicensed revolver and 25 bullets in his possession and control. The defence lawyers said they would file an appeal with the higher court against the judgement after getting a copy of it.
