The SC released the full text of its judgment on July 27, around six months after it upheld the High Court verdict declaring illegal the Fifth Amendment. The Fifth Amendment had legitimised the Governments and military rule since killing of then President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975, to April 9, 1979. Judge Mohammad Rezaul Islam of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 handed down the sentence in presence of the convicts Tariqul Islam and Masum Mia. The tribunal ordered to send them to jail cancelling their bails, obtained earlier from another Court.

A Dhaka Court sent to jail three leaders of the Narsingdi District unit Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and two Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres rejecting their bail petitions on December 30, reports Daily Star. The five JeI leaders were identified as Narsingdi District Jamaat ameer (Chief) Abdus Sattar, Sadar sub-district JeI chief Shamsul Islam Talukder, secretary Abdur Rashid Hasemi, District unit ICS president Mahfuzur Rahman Bhuiyan and secretary Abul Hashem Mollah. They were arrested in connection with December 7 clash in which 30 people including 5 Police personnel were injured.
