A Dhaka Court on April 20 sent Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Aman Ullah Aman to jail in connection with a case of killing of a leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) in Dhaka city on December 29, 2013, reports New Age. Police filed the murder case as the BNP and its ally JeI fired gunshots and exploded crude bombs which killed Dakkhin Khan unit ICS president Mansur Pradhaniya after the Police tried to contain the situation arising out of the opposition’s ‘march for democracy’ on December 29, 2013. Police accused more than a dozen BNP and JeI for directly and indirectly instigating, plotting and financing the crime.

The Supreme Court (SC) on April 24 rejected a Government petition seeking stay on a High Court (HC) verdict that acquitted four arrested ICS cadres for killing eight persons, including six activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of ruling Awami League (AL) in Chittagong city of Chittagong District in July 2000, reports The Daily Star. The HC on April 17 acquitted ICS cadres - Sajjad Hossain Khan, Alamgir Kabir Manik, Azam and Muhamad Solaiman, condemned to death by a Chittagong court. The HC acquitted them saying that the charges brought against them were not proved, as none of the witnesses saw them shooting the eight people in the port city in July 2000.

Meanwhile, the Dhaka High Court on May 7 granted bail to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy for six months in a case filed for killing an ICS cadre, reports The Daily Star. Police filed the case after ICS cadre Mansur Pradhania (20) was killed in a clash between law enforcers and the cadres JeI-ICS in Dhaka city on December 29, 2013. After hearing a bail petition, the High Court also issued a rule upon the Government to explain why the BNP leader should not be granted regular bail in the case.

The Supreme Court (SC) on June 11 continued hearing for fourth day on the appeal filed by Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Kamaruzzaman challenging the death penalty given to him for his wartime offences, reports Daily Star. On May 9, 2013 International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) sentenced Kamaruzzaman, one of the key organisers of Al Badr force, to death after finding him guilty of committing crimes against humanity during the war. Kamaruzzaman's counsel Nazrul Islam read out before the Appellate Division of the SC the statements made by prosecution witnesses over the charges of torture on Syed Abdul Hannan, the then Principal of Sherpur College, killing of 164 people in Shohagpur village and one Golam Mostafa of Gridda Narayanpur village in Sherpur during the 1971 Liberation War.

A Dhaka Court on June 23 awarded death penalty to eight militants of banned Islamist outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B), including its 'chief' Mufti Abdul Hannan, and meted out life sentence to six others for bombing to death 10 people during Pahela Baishakh (Bengali New Year) celebrations at Ramna Batamul in Dhaka city on April 14, 2001, reports The Independent. The death row convicts of the outfit are 'military commander' of HuJI-B Mufti Abdul Hannan, Maulana Akbar Hossain alias Helaluddin, Maulana Mohammad Tajuddin, Hafez Jahangir Alam Badar, Maulana Abu Bakar alias Selim Hawlader, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, Mufti Abdul Hye and Arif Hasan Suman. Those who were sentenced to life imprisonment are Maulana Yahiya, Maulana Shawkat Osman alias Sheikh Farid, Maulana Abdul Hannan Sabbir, Maulana Abdur Rouf, Shahadat Ullah alias Jewel and Maulana Abdur Rouf. Hannan had told to the press and court that Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Home Minister in the last Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led Government, had assured him that he could stay in the country without any fear, reports The Daily Star on June 24 (today). The ex-Minister had told Hannan that he could even stay in Dhaka and move around freely. It was his assurance that made Hannan stay in the capital and ditch the idea of fleeing the country.

Prosecution witness Abdul Aziz while testifying before the International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) against Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) Nayeb-e-Ameer (Deputy Chief) Maulana Abdus Sobhan (77) on June 30 corroborated the charge of killing 10 unarmed people by the Pakistan occupation army at the behest of Sobhan during the Liberation War, reports UNBconnect. Sobhan was arrested on September 20, 2012, by the members of an Army intelligence agency at the Bangabandhu Bridge toll plaza in Tangail District in connection with the case of the 1971 crimes against humanity. After framing nine charges against him he was indicted on December 31, 2013.

Police on August 12 arrested two War Crime suspects in Netrakona District for their alleged involvement in crimes against humanity committed in the District during the Liberation War in 1971, reports The Daily Star. Obaidul Haque alias Abu Taher and Ataur Rahman alias Nani, alleged Razakars and residents of Mokhterpara in Netrakona District were arrested after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) issued warrants of arrest. Shahjahan Kabir, Investigation Officer (IO) in the case told that he had started investigation against the duo on June 6, 2013 and found “preliminary” evidence about their “involvement” in at least three to four acts of War Crimes.

A Dhaka court on August 21 indicted 13 cadres of banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B) including its 'chief' Mufti Abdul Hannan in a murder case filed in connection with the bomb attack in a Communist Party of Bangladesh rally (in Paltan Maidan of Dhaka) on January 21, 2001, reports Daily Star. Judge KM Imrul Kayes of Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka framed the charges, but Hannan and five others of the accused pleaded innocence. The court also fixed September 14, 2014 to start the trial in the case. Of the accused, Mufti Hannan, Mufti Mainuddin Sheikh, Arif Hassan Sumon, Maulana Sabbir Ahmed, Maulana Shawkat Osman and Mohammad Moshiur Rahman are currently behind bars while Mufti Abdul Hai, Shafiqur Rahman, Jahangir Alam Badar, Md Nur Islam, Mohibul Mustakin, Anisur Rahman and Rafiqul Alam Miraj have been absconding since the incident took place.

Judge Shaheb Nur Uddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 reframed the charges in response to a petition filed by Prosecutor Abu Abdullah. In his petition Abdullah said the 14 members of HuJI-B, including Hannan, were charged in the case under a wrong section of law. Earlier, Metropolitan Sessions Judge ANM Bashir Ullah framed the charges against the 14 HuJI-B members in the case filed under the explosive substances act on April 16, 2009.
