The Times of India reports on June 9 that with terrorist triggering violence in the State, chief minister Mukul Sangma stressed on strengthening the State's Police force to tackle rising terrorism in the Garo Hills. Underscoring that strengthening of the Police force and creation of a ‘Special Force-10’ to tackle insurgency was under way, Sangma said several schemes for gainful employment of the youth so that they are not lured into militancy, were also being implemented. He also said a list of interlocutors to hold dialogues with terror outfit Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) has been forwarded to the central government for the latter's approval. Besides, the Government has also appointed two interlocutors to hold dialogues with splinter groups, on condition that they abjured violence, the chief minister said. The Centre has rushed 10 companies of additional paramilitary forces to assist the State Police to contain the situation in this region. The Centre will dispatch five more companies of paramilitary forces soon to the Garo Hills, chief minister said even as he expressed gratitude to the Centre for having responded positively to the request of the state by promptly dispatching central Security Forces.

Chief Minister (CM) of Meghalaya Mukul Sangma on June 11 stated that Maoist organisations across the country have access to sophisticated weapons which have emerged from the North Eastern region, reports The Shillong Times. He noted “Even in the Maoist organization whether in Jharkhand or Chattisgarh, access to sophisticated weapons is easy because of its availability in the region.”He also added that arms were emerging from countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar and China. Sangma further stated that Government of Meghalaya would re-look into the proposed peace talks with Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA). He said that Government would have to re-evaluate this issue because GNLA has continued to indulge in criminal activities and killing of innocent people. He also added that the militancy has impacted the growth and development of the State. Mukul Sangma also indicated that the threat of GNLA to the Congress workers in Garo Hills led to the defeat of the party candidate from the Tura seat in West Garo Hills District in the recent Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian Parliament) poll. He stated that “During the election, the GNLA was threatening the Congress workers which itself had so much of ramifications in the election result”.

He had been operating with the GNLA for close to two years and his name in the group was Garo Champa.
