The Shillong Times reports on February 3 that amid the allegation of politician-militant nexus, the Government is yet to fully probe an alleged case of Police-militant nexus involving the then Circle Inspector of Williamnagar, TC Chacko, who is currently posted as the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nongstoin. The UALA, a breakaway group of ANVC-B had alleged that with the support of the Government and Police higher ups, Chacko had handed over two AK-56 and one AK-47 rifles to ANVC-B leader Rimpu Marak when he was part of the parent ANVC to arm the group to take on other militant outfits, especially the GNLA. The allegation, if thoroughly probed, would prove how the ANVC-B was formed. It was the weapons seized from other militant groups which were handed over to the ANVC-B, the UALA had alleged.

Police uncovered the close links between the GNLA-F led by Reding T Sangma and the ANVC-B after a camp of the latter was busted near Mindikgre (South Garo Hills District) in the morning of February 7 in which the documents and seals of the new organization along with one shot gun, a revolver, four rounds of 7.62 ammo, two rounds of 7.65 ammo, blank ANVC-B letter pads with the signature of the outfit’s ‘finance secretary’ Sengdura and also demand notes made out in the name of the rival United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA) were recovered. The Shillong Times reports on February 13 that a group of senior Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) leaders led by former ‘finance secretary’ Reding T Sangma have broken away from the outfit’s military ‘chief’ Sohan D Shira and formed their own organization christening it A’chik Songna An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK). On February 12, the ‘commander-in-chief’ (C-in-C) of the new outfit, Reding T Sangma, gave in detail the reasons for parting ways with Sohan D Shira. “We unitedly formed the GNLA to fight for Garoland and protect our people from oppression. We wanted to take the cause of Garos to a higher level. Over the years GNLA gained from strength to strength until Sohan broke all rules of the organization and began to take decisions without consulting the other leaders of the group” said Reding T Sangma. He blamed Sohan for the fratricidal killings within the GNLA group and for targeting other ‘revolutionary’ outfits like the Breakaway faction of Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B) and the Norrok X Momin led United A'chik Liberation Army (UALA) making them sworn enemies. The new outfit ASAK, which literally means the vanguards of Garoland has named its headquarters as Grikram. It has also roped in another senior GNLA militant leader known as Jack Marak who has now been made the ‘finance secretary’ of ASAK. Besides Reding and Jack, the other senior leaders of the group are ‘chairman’ Cheo Challang, ‘deputy C-in-C’ Chue Dilsrang Sangma, ‘secretary’ Dura Matgrik and ‘joint secretary’ Anmisil.

Welcoming Meghalaya Governor K. K. Paul’s offer of peace talks, Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) ‘commander in chief’ Sohan D Shira maintained that it can happen only if their ‘chairman’ Champion R Sangma is released from prison and leads the group in the deliberations, The Shillong Times reports on February 18. Champion R Sangma is currently lodged in Shillong jail for subversive activities. He has obtained bail in several cases but needs to secure bail in two more cases to walk out free. Referring to A’chik Songna An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK), Sohan D Shira, said, “We have reliable source that the floating of new outfit ASAK was masterminded by surrendered GNLA Mingran T Sangma”. Mingran was previously the ‘chief training instructor’ of GNLA, but had deserted the group with over a dozen cadres and substantial number of weapons. Also, the ‘deputy commander-in-chief’ of ASAK, Chue Dilsrang, refuting the allegations made against outfit’s ‘commander-in-chief’, Reding T Sangma by GNLA of fund misuse in a statement issued on February 17, claimed that during his stint as the ‘finance secretary’ of the GNLA, Reding was prevented from executing his duties as per his designation and had never extorted money for his own benefits.

ANVC-B on February 18 expressed doubt over the role of A'chik Peace Volunteers Council (APVC), the newly formed vigilante group, and source of the footage that was leaked to media where a GNLA cadre executed an unidentified victim mercilessly, reports The Shillong Times. “It is an old footage similar to Taliban execution which is aimed to unleash fear and terror. Why was the footage leaked now when the GNLA is showing signs of coming for peace talks,” the ANVC-B questioned. The ANVC-B also added that if the GNLA is willing to join the peace talks, Government must process necessary steps at the earliest to bring them on board in the best interest of Garo hills. Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, on February 18, said that the government will examine the demand of the GNLA to release its jailed chairman for peace talks. “We need to evaluate everything in hand before moving forward and examine their (GNLA) demand,” Sangma told journalists.
