Hafiz Muhammad Hamid, brother of Hafiz Mohammed Saeed, the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) chief, was deported along with his family from the United States on June 3, according to Daily Times. He is expected to arrive in Pakistan on June 5-morning. Hafiz Hamid was imam (priest) at the Islamic Centre of Greater Worcester, Massachusetts, and had been fighting immigration regulation infringements for the last several months. His other brother, Hafiz Muhammad Masood, is also fighting deportation and is now waiting for the next hearing of a US federal immigration court on October 11, 2007. Hafiz Muhammad Hamid came to the US in 2000 to attend a finance conference organised by the Harvard Programme for Islamic Finance. He stayed on to become the imam of the Worcester mosque. He reportedly worked closely with the Islamic Society of Boston. Before coming to the US, he is believed to have been in charge of the LeT ‘safe house’ at Moon Chowk in Lahore, a “facility” that no longer exists.

A senior Government official, Syed Mehdi Hussain, was shot dead in Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), on June 4-morning, according to Dawn. Police suspect it to be a sectarian attack. Hussain, a Director in the NWFP information department, had no enmity with anyone, according to his brother Sabtain Hussain Shah. The assailants opened fire on Hussain when he was going to his car parked outside his home in Jhanda Bazaar. "We are looking at different aspects of the case, including the possibility that this was a sectarian attack, in view of recent attacks on people of a particular sect," a senior police officer said.

Armed volunteers with their faces covered have reportedly been patrolling the area during nights and checking vehicles for the past week. The Taliban have told local people to remove ring tones of film songs from their cellular phones and personal computers and replace them with Quranic verses and jihadi songs. The handbills said that Taliban would launch an armed campaign from July 1 against ‘indecency’ and those involved in ‘un-Islamic activities’, including music centres, prize bond dealers, usurers, narcotics dealers, car lifters and barbers who trim beards. A poster pasted on a wall said Taliban would provide alternative self-employment opportunities to those affected by the campaign.

Militants have banned the movement of tribesmen at Darra Adamkhel in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) after 10pm and announced that any vehicle not stopping for ‘checking’ would be fired at, according to Dawn. Posters and handbills purportedly distributed by the Islami Taliban in the town cautioned tribesmen to avoid ‘unnecessary movement’ after 10pm. The handbills warned that if a driver did not stop for checking by the Taliban during the night, they had the right to shoot him. They warned that if any Mujahid was harmed between Akhurwal and Bostikhel areas or anyone was found monitoring activities of the Taliban in the area, it would be considered an ‘unpardonable crime’. "If a person is found creating hindrance for a Talib, he will not be pardoned," said a poster.

Police said on June 5 that they had arrested two suspected militants wanted in the 2002 abduction-cum-murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl, according to Daily Times. Attaur Rehman and Faisal Bhatti were arrested on June 4 in Kashmor, a town northeast of Karachi (capital of Sindh province), said Saghir Mugheri, an area police officer. However, a lawyer for the duo’s families said they were arrested by security agencies in 2003 and have been secretly held in custody since then. Mugheri said both men were members of the outlawed Sunni group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ). An unnamed police officer investigating Pearl’s case said Rehman is suspected of leading the gang that abducted Daniel Pearl in Karachi in 2002. Rehman, also known as Naim Bukhari, supervised the reporter’s detention in a shack for several days before he was killed, said the officer. He added that both suspects were also involved in the 1998 murder of two Iranian engineers in Karachi, the killing of two Shiite Muslim lawyers in 2000, and an unsuccessful attempt to release a fellow militant from a prison van in 1998 that left two guards dead. Mugheri informed that police arrested the two militants in a car traveling towards Balochistan and weapons and explosives were found in the vehicle.

The Balochistan Government on June 8 held the Hamid Karzai-led Afghan Government responsible for providing shelter to Baloch separatist insurgents, which they believe was "clear evidence of Afghan involvement in the instability created in Balochistan," according to Daily Times. "There is ample evidence to substantiate our allegations that Afghanistan is creating trouble in Balochistan and extending full support to Baloch fighters," Raziq Bugti, spokesperson for the Balochistan Government, told a press conference held in the Chief Minister Secretariat at Quetta. He said that from day one, the government had not ruled out the involvement of a foreign hand in creating trouble in Balochistan. However, he said, the government’s stance became self-evident since the Governor of Afghan province of Kandahar, Asadullah Khalid, stated that several Baloch had taken shelter in his province after fleeing from the conflict-stricken province of Balochistan. He informed that the Balochistan Government had made a formal request to the Afghan Government for handing over the people who the government believed were involved in terrorist activities across the province. According to the spokesperson, a majority of the people who were hiding in Afghanistan had escaped from the Dera Bugti and Sui areas in 2006 when the conflict between the government and Bugti tribesmen intensified.

The US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Richard Boucher, on June 14 praised Islamabad’s role in the “war on terror” and agreed to the Pakistani assertion that there was no solid evidence of Mullah Omar’s presence in Balochistan, according to The News. Boucher met Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Muhammad Yusuf in the provincial capital Quetta on June 14. During the meeting, Yousuf reportedly dispelled the impression that Quetta was the Taliban headquarters. “There is no headquarters of Taliban in Quetta, nor Mullah Omar or Osama bin Laden are present in Quetta or any other part of Balochistan,” he said, according to an official statement. The statement claimed that Boucher agreed that there was no concrete “evidence that Mullah Omar was present in Balochistan” and that he appreciated Pakistan’s role in the war against terrorism. The statement said Yusuf informed Boucher that Pakistan was an important ally of the United States in the global war on terror and President Pervez Musharraf was determined to eliminate terrorism from the country with the support of the people. APP reported that Boucher also visited the border town of Chaman where he saw the biometric system installed by Pakistan on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border with the objective to check illegal cross-border movement.

The United States Assistant Secretary of State, Richard Boucher, said in Islamabad on June 15 that holding of free and transparent elections in Pakistan was a bigger problem than the issue of President General Pervez Musharraf’s uniform, Daily Times reported. Boucher denied that he had come to Pakistan to broker a deal between President Musharraf and the Pakistan People’s Party. Speaking to the media, Boucher said that President Musharraf had assured the US that the issue of his two offices would be settled in accordance with the Constitution and the US believed him. He said that President Musharraf had also assured the US that the elections would be held in a free and transparent manner. He added that the US was willing to provide monetary, technical and observer assistance to Pakistan for the elections. Boucher opined that the US believed that Pakistan was moving towards democracy and becoming a moderate country, adding that there was no contradiction in the US policy of supporting media freedom and President Musharraf simultaneously. Asked about Pakistan’s role in the war against terrorism and frequent statements by US officials that Pakistan should do more, Boucher said “We certainly recognise the enormous effort, the enormous achievements and the enormous sacrifices that Pakistan has made so far. I’ve often said in the Congress and elsewhere that no country has done more against the terrorists or lost more people doing so than Pakistan. And I think that’s an important place to remember.” However, he said more had to be done in both Pakistan and Afghanistan to eliminate “spaces where terrorists can plot and plan”.

Cleric of the Taliban-linked Lal Masjid (Red mosque) in Islamabad, Maulana Abdul Aziz, has issued a death fatwa against staff at a magazine for publishing a fashion-shoot advertisement entitled Adam and Eve, according to Daily Times. The fatwa has been issued against the chief editor, publisher and other staff of an English language magazine called Octane. “In the magazine’s June edition blasphemy was committed against Hazrat (Prophet) Adam and Eve... Those responsible for the magazine are liable to death,” Aziz said in a statement. The offending photographs were reportedly titled Adam and Eve – Apple the Bone of Contention, and showed two models in designer-wear holding an apple. Octane’s editor, Zubair Kasuri, said it was just a commercial advertisement and contained nothing blasphemous, and had been published before by other magazines. “But even then if it creates any misunderstanding or conveys any wrong perception, we are ready to apologise,” he said. The Islamabad Capital Territory administration, meanwhile, has confiscated the edition of the magazine and all shopkeepers have been prohibited from selling it. The pictures are likely to “disseminate obscenity in society,” said a press note on June 16.

This practice is one of the main causes promoting obscenity and vulgarity in the society,” the letter said. It alleged that shops had been turned into brothels where women were being sexually abused. The letter asked shopkeepers to refrain from selling such items to women and warned that failure to comply with the advice could result in loss of their lives and businesses.

At least 22 people were killed and 10 others sustained injuries when a missile hit a cluster of compounds in the Datakhel area of North Waziristan on June 19, according to Dawn. However, a senior government official and the local Taliban said the death toll might be as high as 32. While the exact nature of the explosion is yet to be ascertained, local people said that missiles had hit a seminary, killing several people and wounding scores of others. Daily Times reported that a Madrassa (seminary) used by the Taliban as a hideout was attacked by a US-controlled drone, killing over 20 militants and wounding 15 others. "Two missiles were fired from a pilotless spy plane at around 10am and initial reports say 17 people were killed," said unnamed security officials.

The caretaker of a Madrassa (seminary) near a site in North Waziristan which was the target of a suspected missile strike on June 19 has said that a total of 34 people were killed, and all of them were locals, according to Daily Times. Maulana Muhammad Amir, caretaker of the Ziul Aloom seminary in the Dattakhel area, said all those killed were local tribesmen, and the target was not a Madrassa, as reported in the press, but "a tent on a hilltop". However, the political administration of North Waziristan said that 30 "terrorists" were killed and 18 of them were foreigners, including Chechens, Uzbeks and Arabs, APP reported. Maulana Muhammad Alam, member of a peace committee monitoring implementation of the September 5, 2006-peace accord in North Waziristan, said the political administration "knows little about the air strike and the military says nothing. We don’t know what happened."

President Pervez Musharraf said on June 29 that an operation could be launched against the Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa brigade, but a raid would lead to heavy casualties on both sides because a large number of suicide bombers were inside the mosque and seminaries, according to Dawn. Speaking to the media at the National Defence University in Islamabad, General Musharraf said: "Can you guarantee that blood of any dead or injured will not be screened on television channels during the operation?" He informed that militants having links with the Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) and al Qaeda were hiding in the mosque and seminaries and they had explosives. They might cause havoc in case of an armed operation, he said, adding: "Let it be clear that the action against the Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa brigade was not withheld because of government’s weakness or cowardice in the face of enemy." "Critics should understand that the Madrassa houses 2,500 women students with minor boys and suicide bombers inside are equipped with sophisticated arms. While police are not capable of launching such a complex operation, the army cannot be involved for it can give a wrong message to the world," the president said. He also observed, "We have involved senior clerics of the country, the Council of Islamic Ideology and the Imam-i-Kaaba to end the standoff. Shall we now call Allah to help these elements shun their wrongdoings?"
