The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) has announced that its cadres will shortly begin attacking the ruling Congress party leaders who do not oppose the ban imposed on them by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, according to The Hindu. In a statement issued from the State capital Hyderabad on September 7, Maoist representative Janardhan maintained that his party would not, however, target ordinary workers of the Congress party, but the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army and other Maoist forces would step up attacks on the leadership. He also said the Maoists were ‘imposing’ a ban on the Congress party and said his cadres would prevent any activity by the ruling party members. The Maoists also set a deadline for the Congress leadership to quit their posts by October 2, 2005.

The Director General of Police in Orissa, Sujit Das, disclosed on September 7 that a proposal to declare Sambalpur district in Western Orissa as Maoist-dominated has been placed before the Government. Once the proposal is accepted, the district would receive extra funds and sophisticated weapons to fight the Maoists. The police chief said that the Maoist problem in the region was an outcome of economic disparity and that the indifferent attitude of the Government machinery provided an upper hand to the Maoists to lure people towards them and even use them as tools in unlawful activities. Das opined that police action was not the solution to the problem. It would rather prove detrimental and the entire tribal mass might emerge as a vital force against the police and administration, he cautioned.
