According to media reports, the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has collected Rs 1 crore as extortion amount from a section of government officials and businessmen in the Nagaon, Marigaon and Karbi Anglong districts during the last nine months. This was disclosed by an ULFA terrorist who surrendered before the Army at the Mohkhuli camp in Nagaon on April 3. The surrendered terrorist is also reported to have revealed that a 25-member group, which includes three women terrorists, under the leadership of Deodhai Phukan, was active in collecting extortion in Amsoi, Ullukunchi and Langklam areas of the Karbi Anglong district.

Director General of Border Security Force (BSF) Gurbachan Jagat, while speaking to the media in Guwahati on April 5 said, "There is a shortfall of security forces along the border and so the need for a joint patrolling of the frontiers". The terrorists are reportedly armed with sophisticated weapons. The outfit, which was formed recently, by a break-away faction of the Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) would possibly target Saijong village. L Singson said, ‘Presently the militants are collecting Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 from each Kuki dominated areas. The amount of donations depend on the size of the villages.’ This was also brought to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Karbi Anglong in his letter, who has ordered for a red alert in these police stations limits, added the report.

The study would reportedly be done to make an assessment as to the extent the relatives of those who have been killed in various terrorist related activities are left traumatized. The study will also look into their requirements that are necessary for leading a normal life. Besides, the project will also focus on the ways that are required to bring about necessary changes in the training pattern of police personnel and other government officials. This would be done to effect change in the attitude of the latter to bring them closer to the public. Quoting police sources the report also said a syllabus on community policing, human rights and other such aspects would be prepared for the purpose. Professional bodies and Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) would also be engaged in this task.
