Army Chief General N C Vij, during his three-day visit to the Northeast, stated in Guwahati on January 2 that during the recent military operations in Bhutan, nearly 650 terrorists had been neutralized. The Army Chief said, "We had estimated between 1,200 to 1,500 militants in Bhutan prior to the operations, although the Bhutanese Government had mentioned a higher figure." According to him, "the remaining militants were now scattered in isolated groups in Bhutan, and the Royal Bhutan Army (RBA) had already commenced mopping up operations." He also said that "Joint exercises with the Myanmar Army against militants based in that country are likely in the near future, and we might come to that stage eventually." He however, added that "joint operations with Bangladesh had not been considered as of now."
