Assam Tribune quoting Assam Police reports that in the year 2007, 286 civilians, 24 security force (SF) personnel and 129 militants were killed in 500 incidents of violence. While 750 civilians were injured in different militancy-related incidents, SF personnel arrested 1627 militants belonging to various outfits in the State. Police sources further said that the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was the worst hit as a number of hardcore cadres of the outfit were either arrested or killed during the year. 75 civilians were abducted by the militant groups in 2007 and 55 of them were rescued.

One surrendered cadre of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), identified as Raja Basumatary, was shot dead by another surrendered cadre of the same outfit, Bigrai Basumatary, at his rented house at Gwjunpuri in Kokrajhar town on January 3-night, reports Sentinel. According to Champa Basumatary, wife of Raja, Bigrai and Raja Basumatary had disputes over financial matters. “Bigrai shot my husband dead from point blank range at the rented house,” Champa Basumatary said. Bigrai was arrested by the police. Raja had joined the NDFB in 1993 and surrendered along with his killer Bigrai in 2002.

The Golaghat police arrested three suspected Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agents with American currency in their possession on January 6. According to police, the three persons, identified as Mohammed Ahmed Hussain, Ijal Haque and Abdul Khalek, were arrested while they were trying to exchange a bank draft of American dollar with a person in Golaghat. The three suspected ISI agents were trying to exchange the one million American dollar token which amounts to 4.5 crores in rupees. The Additional Superintendent of Police (city) Debojit Deori said Sarma was on the "wanted" list since October 2004, when an arrested ULFA conduit, Anil Mazumdar, named him as the lynchpin of the outfit’s network in the city. A 17-hour general strike enforced by militant groups on January 26 to boycott the Republic Day celebrations has failed to impact the States of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura, according to Hindustan Times. Officials said public and private vehicles were plying normally with people participating in the national day celebrations. Five militant groups, including the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), had called for a 17-hour general strike that began at 1 am on January 26 to boycott the Republic Day. The other groups are the Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), the Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF), the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), and the Tripura People's Democratic Front.

Acting on a tip-off that a group of ULFA cadres were taking shelter there, the Army personnel launched an operation. Captain S. K. The seizure included three universal grenade launchers, three Austria-made grenades, two kilograms of RDX explosives, one kilogram of gunpowder, gelatine sticks and detonators. Four other persons, identified as Pranab Bey Sarkar, Swapan Malakar, Sontosh Dam and Basa Timung, who were with Khakra, were also abducted. Militants severely assaulted Sarkar and Malakar and took Dam and Timung with them. Villagers later recovered Khakra’s body and rescued Sarkar and Malakar.
