Nine opposition parties have announced 10-day protest programmes in Biratnagar in Morang District on January 22 against Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai starting from January 25, reports The Himalayan Times. The opposition parties declared protest programme to topple the Bhattarai-led Government through street protests as he has been refusing to put in his papers. They have even formed the Protest Coordination Committee comprising District chiefs of all the nine parties. According to the protest programme schedule, they will stage joint protest rally and meet in Biratnagar’s Janaandolan Chowk on January 25. A motorcycle rally would be staged in front of stadium at 1 pm on January 29. Similarly, the political parties would organise horn rally on January 31 and February 1. Finally, a public meeting with more than 50,000 participants will be held on February 20 in Biratnagar.

The clashes ensued after YCL cadres allegedly threw stones at cadres of the Nepali Congress (NC) and the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) who had gathered for a protest rally. Members from all the agitating nine political parties including NC and UML will gather at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu before initiating a march from the same place. The demonstrators will subsequently converge into mass gathering at Sahid Gate [Martrys Gate] where some key leaders including CPN-UML Vice-Chairman Bamdev Gautam and NC General Secretary Prakash Man will address the gathering. As the first phase of protests launched by the opposition alliance is going to conclude on February 8, leaders from the agitating political parties on February 5 worked out protest programs in Kathmandu for the second stage of demonstrations across the country, reports Myrepublica.com. The alliance of nine opposition parties led by Nepali Congress (NC) and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) have taken to the street since last month aimed at unseating the present Government and purportedly to foil the ruling coalition´s plan to impose autocratic rule in the country. CPN-UML leader Shankar Pokharel, a member of the taskforce, told "We have worked out the next phase of protests broadly. We will work on the proposal further in detail in the presence of top leaders. Top leaders of Nepali Congress (NC) and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) and other opposition parties address the mass meeting calling for the ouster of the Bhattarai Government. Addressing the meeting, NC President Sushil Koirala accused the ruling Maoist of not letting go of war-time mentality. He said the Maoist party should act responsibly for the sake of the country. Irate cadres of Unified Communist Party of Nepal (UCPN-M) party have vandalised their own party office in Dhading District on December 13 following a row over the handing out of the Proportional Representation (PR) seats, reports Nepal News. The District level leaders and activists burnt important documents they seized from the office, vandalized office equipment, furniture and sign board and set them on fire while chanting slogans against the party leadership. Later, they padlocked the party office to show their dissatisfaction over party leadership’s unilateral decision while selecting the party’s list of final 54 PR candidates. The Maoist activists took such a drastic step to express their resentment and dissatisfaction after Maoist District leader Ram Bahadur Bhandari, who they claimed has devoted many years of his life in the service of the party, didn’t appear in the final list of candidates under the PR electoral system submitted to the Election Commission (EC) on December 30.
