World Hindu Federation during a gathering at Bharatpur of Chitwan District on January 5 called to reinstate Nepal as Hindu state, reports Khabar Hub. Federation Chairman Dr. Ramchandra Adhikari said the movement to restore the Hindu state should be launched from Chitwan and made nationwide. Federation General Secretary Ganesh Prasad Neupane called for unity among like-minded people for the protection of the religion. He accused that Nepal was dismissed as the Hindu state due to the vested interests of political parties. Federation Secretary Netranath Poudel urged the masses to vote for the party carrying the agenda of Nepal as a Hindu state in the upcoming election.

Mohan Baidya, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal-Revolutionary Maoist (CPN-Revolutionary Maoist) speaking at a press meet organized by the Federation of Revolutionary Journalists in Kathmandu on January 11 said that there is no possibility of unity with Maoist parties, reports Republica. Baidya said that there was no possibility of unity among the former Maoist elements including the including the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist Centre (CPN-Maoist Centre). Similarly, he said that there was no possibility of unity with the CPN-Masal led by Mohan Bikram Singh and the Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-Maoist-Chand). CK Raut-led Janamat Party on January 17 announced various protest programs in Kathmandu, reports Khabar Hub. Issuing a press statement in Kathmandu, party Chairman Raut has made various protest programs to last up to February 3. Janamat Party has been in agitation expressing solidarity with the Terai farmers since last few weeks. To mark the first day of the protest programs, the party has called the district executive committees meeting to discuss about the nature of movement and local level preparations for it on January 17 and January 18. Formal protest movements start from January 19, the Balidani Diwas, literally the sacrifice day and would continue up to February 3. Keeping in view the growing number of coronavirus cases in the country, Janamat party has urged all party committees to ensure that all participants of the programs use mask and maintain physical distance during the program. The Janmat Party has been agitating in various districts of the Terai for the past few days saying that the Government has not been able to address the various demands of the farmers.

Leaders of the ruling alliance have agreed on January 18 to hold local elections in April, reports Republica. A meeting of the alliance was held at the Prime Minister's Residence in Baluwatar, Kathmandu to discuss the upcoming local elections. After the discussion, Government Spokesperson Gyanendra Bahadur Karki informed media persons that they have agreed to hold the election on time. He said that the meeting will be held again on January 20 (today) after more homework on the issue. As the regular meeting of the Council of Ministers will also be held on January 20 (today), the poll date can be fixed by that meeting, he added. The Election Commission (EC) has suggested to the Government to hold the local level elections on April 27 and May 5. Officials of the EC met Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on December 24, 2021 and drew his attention to start preparations for the local elections.

Leaders and members of the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist Centre (CPN-Maoist Centre) organized protests and demonstrations across the country on February 16, warning the Government not to ratify the US-funded Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC), reports Republica. CPN-Maoist Centre leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha also took part in one of such protests held in the capital Kathmandu. The protestors carried banners and placards demanding the Government not ratify the MCC outside the House of Representatives (HoR) building at Baneshwar. The MCC headquarters had written to the Nepali Government to ratify the MCC before February 28. It had also stated that the decision to ratify the project was in the hands of Nepal alone.

Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML) Nuwakot leader Madhav Prasad Pandey has defected to the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist Centre (CPN-Maoist Center) at a program held at the CPN-Maoist Center party office in Parisdanda on April 15, reports Khabar Hub. According to the CPN-Maoist Center, as many as 100 CPN-UML cadres joined the CPN-Maoist Center under Pandey’s leadership. Welcoming Pandey, Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda said, “I heard that UML Chair KP Oli has reached Nuwakot. It is pleasant coincidence that UML leaders and cadres joined the Maoists under Pandey’s leadership on the same day.” Pandey is a permanent resident of Belkotgadhi Muncipality-13, Nuwakot. At a press conference held in Kathmandu on May 9 it was shared that Bastola, the leader of the dissident group of the CPN is the coordinator of the newly-formed party CPN-Majority. According to Bastola, the new party was formed after “rejecting the conspiracy of some of the party’s central members” to trap the party in the parliamentary system by contesting the local polls from the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML)’s election symbol. Bastola said that the new strategy of his party was to complete the scientific socialist revolution and by carrying forward the slogan of prosperity and independence of the country. “After the Biplav [Chand]-led faction was tempted to take some central members to the polls under the UML symbol, we decided to form a new party by continuing the goal of completing the democratic revolution," Bastola said. More than 20 persons were injured in a clash between cadres of the Nepali Congress (NC) and Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist Centre (CPN-Maoist Center) at Bhorle in Nilkantha Municipality-6 in Dhading District in Province No. 3 of Nepal, reports Khabar Hub on May 12. NC ward president candidate Bhupendra Kumar Shrestha has been seriously injured in the clash. According to the Police, he sustained injuries on his head, right eye, teeth, and other parts of his body. Another 20 people sustained injuries in the clash, Police said. The clash took place during the election campaign on May 11 night during the silence period, when the cadres of the two parties engaged in electioneering clashed. The NC, on the other hand, said that its cadres were attacked again by the cadres of CPN-Maoist Center, but a CPN-Maoist Center cadre said that the fight started after the NC attacked the cadres of CPN-Maoist Center. Marking the beginning of the central-level review of the recently held local level election in Kathmandu on June 30, Thapaliya said it was EC's responsibility to conduct the polls but a decision on the election date is yet to be taken. Stating that fencing the vote counting sites was a compulsion and was done citing insecurity in the local level polls, the CEC said it is unfortunate in a democracy. The Democratic Socialist Party has submitted an 11-point memorandum to Prime Minister (PM) Sher Bahadur Deuba at his official residence in Baluwatar on June 7 (today), reports My Republica. Democratic Socialist Party leader Umashankar Argariya, Chairman Mahantha Thakur along with other party leaders paid a courtesy call on PM Deuba and handed him the memorandum demanding to solve the issues of people without citizenship, release of Resham Chaudhary and other party leaders who were involved in the Madhesh movement. He said that Prime Minister Deuba expressed his commitment to pass the citizenship bill from parliament as soon as possible. He also drew the attention of the Prime Minister to make fertilizers available to the farmers immediately. Speaking at a program in Lalitpur on June 23, Dahal said that the party had won fewer seats than expected in the local elections as he had a lot of confidence in the alliance. “"We should not expect more and stay relaxed due to the coalition like we did in the local elections," Dahal said. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded with the government to consider amendment in the Act related to transitional justice in line with international principles related to the same issue, reports Khabar Hub. Issuing a press statement in Kathmandu on July 20, the human rights agency in the country also demanded that the amendment in the Act should not contradict with the verdicts issued by the Supreme Court on the same issue. In the statement, Spokesperson Tikaram Pokharel urged the government to ensure justice to conflict-victims after adequately consulting with the victims and stakeholders as well as heeding the recommendations of the Commission. The NHRC also called attention of the government towards the bill presented by the government to amend the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Act-2071 BS and appealed with the government to revise the Act in such a way that it would be acceptable to all. “The Commission reminds the government that ensuring justice to the conflict victims is the main subject of the transitional justice,” it said.
