Director General of Tripura Police Pranay Sahay said that there were reports of National Liberation Front of Tripura’s (NLFT) movements prior to Tripura Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections scheduled to be held on May 3 (today), reports Tripurainfo. He said, “This time extremist threat during ADC elections is less. Nevertheless, movement of some militants in some vulnerable localities cannot be ruled out altogether.” He said that movements of some NLFT militants were reported from rural areas of Kanchanpur, Chhamanu, Langtarai Valley, Manikpur, Ganganagar, Mungiakami and Gandacherra in Dhalai District and Dhalai-South District border.

The United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF) accused the Kuki National Army (KNA) of indulging in threats and intimidations in the first phase of ADC election held on May 26, against the provisions of the Suspension of Operation ground rules. Consequently, people belonging to the Koms were denied their democratic rights to franchise in Sagang and Tuibuong areas in Churachandpur District and at Moreh area in Chandel District just to name a few, stated the UKLF. In the State Assembly Election held in February 2007, the KNA leaders were paid a huge amount of rupees for their active service on election duty though badly defeated and chased out from Saitu, Saikul and other constituencies, the UKLF said.

According to Indian Express, the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Bihar are trying to get close relatives tickets for the Assembly Polls scheduled to be held on October --, from their strongholds in Gaya and Aurangabad. Intelligence sources told that a top Maoist leader and regional committee member having considerable influence in the Magadh region, Sanjeev Yadav alias Vijay, is trying to get a ticket for his wife from Gurua (Gaya) seat, now represented by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Shakil Ahmed Khan. The Maoist leader, who holds a major say in the Maoists’ Bihar Jharkhand Special Area Committee (BJSAC), wants a ticket “preferably from Janata Dal-United (JD-U) because of the bigger winning potential”. A JD-U source confirmed that “a woman with affiliations to some Maoist leader” had been trying to get a party ticket, though he wouldn’t give a name.

Acting on an intelligence report, Police carried out a search of the school campus and seized the explosives planted by the Maoists, Director General of Police Neelmani said. In another incident, about ten Maoists intercepted Rajendra Singh, an independent candidate from Guruwa Assembly seat, in a location between Vishunpur and Dhanauti village in the District and poured kerosene before setting ablaze his campaign vehicle, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amit Lodha said. However, the Maoists left six supporters of Singh unharmed by allowing them to get out of the vehicle before setting it ablaze, Lodha said. Tekari and Guruwa are two of the 26 seats that will go to polls on November 20 in the sixth and final phase of Bihar Assembly Elections. Police recovered leaflets and posters from the incident site asking people to boycott the polls.

Separately, a Bihar Military Police (BMP) constable and a home guard were killed and nine others, including three journalists of private TV channels, injured when a landmine went off while it was being defused near Londa village in Imamganj Assembly constituency in Gaya District on November 20. The constable, identified as Anil Singh and others in the BMP Bomb Disposal Squad were defusing the landmine planted by Maoists when it exploded, Police sources said. Six BMP personnel in the bomb-disposal squad and three journalists of private TV channels, covering the sixth and final phase of assembly elections being held were injured by splinters, the sources said.

Sify.com reports that cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) tried to disrupt the fourth and penultimate phase of the panchayat (village level local self government institution) polls in some places in Jharkhand on December 20. According to Police, Maoists opened fire from the hilly terrain in Baridih Kanpur panchayat (booth No. 17) in Chakulia block in the early hours to terrorize the voters but the Security Forces (SFs) compelled the Maoists to retreat. SFs recovered six cylinder bombs buried under a road in Hunterganj in Chatra District. About 1.3 million voters, 66 percent of the electorate voted in the panchayat polls.
