A two-judge bench of the Kolkata High Court, on September 24, directed Purulia arms drop convict and British national Peter Bleach to file an affidavit by October 5, 2001 to state that his detention in jail was a act of ‘ blatant racial discrimination.’ Bleach is serving life term in a Kolkata jail. He submitted to the court that while the five Russian pilots, released in July 2000, and he were convicted and then sentenced to life on identical charges, ''The Russians are now free men and I am in jail because I am a British national. It is racial discrimination''. The court observed that it was still in the dark whether the five Russian pilots were released after being granted mercy or pardon or remittance. The court observed that the matter would become clear after the Union Law Ministry files its affidavit by October 5. Bleach and five other pilots were arrested after a plane dropped a huge cache of arms in Purulia district, West Bengal, on December 17, 1995. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigated into the case and filed charge sheets against Bleach and five Russians.
