Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) ‘commander-in-chief’ Sohan D Shira has ordered the closure of all dry fish markets in Williamnagar town in East Garo Hills District for non-payment of the amount demanded from them, reports The Shillong Times on January 7. Sources have informed that the GNLA is demanding INR 300,000 from each of the dry fish sellers which they are unable to pay. Other business persons too have received extortion notes but have refrained from giving any information to the police for fear of retribution from GNLA. However police are in the know since most dry fish shops have decided to down their shutters. Further, additional police forces have been deployed in Williamnagar Market to instil confidence among the dry fish merchants, reports The Shillong Times. Police have been patrolling the bazaar area during business hours. It is also learnt that representatives of the dry fish merchants and other business persons deliver the extorted amount to the family members of Sohan.

The Shillong Times reports that two militants of United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA) demanded ‘tax’ from a civilian ended up in a hospital with injuries leading to the death of one of them in a botched extortion drive at Darengre village on the outskirts of Tura town in West Garo hills District on February 1. The deceased Sanjay Ch Sangma and Bijoy Ch Sangma were extorting money from their victim when villagers rushed in and caught both of them. Police recovered from their possession a 9 mm caliber automatic and a 7.65 pistol with two magazines and three live rounds of ammunition. The two have been identified as wanted criminals from Bangladesh who were involved in a series of cases ranging from gun running, extortion to kidnappings.

Police sources said that two of those who received demands from the militant outfit, Bhupen Bora, the Congress candidate from Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency and Dr Parvez Ahmed, Trinamool Congress candidate for Barpeta constituency, have already reported the issue to the Police and their security has been tightened. Two militants belonging to the A’chik National Liberation Army (ANLA) were extorting money from traders at Jadi bazaar, near Nangalbibra when they were spotted by a Police team, leading to an exchange of fire. Four men in an auto rickshaw had pulled up at the market shortly after 6 pm and were allegedly trying to extort money when common people in the market surrounded them and started assaulting them. By the time Police arrived on the scene, the mob had vanished leaving behind three men lying unconscious and critically injured. Following a search in the area, another badly injured person was found lying around 200 meters away. Marak was undergoing treatment at the hospital after he, along with another militant Ringrang A Sangma, were beaten by an angry mob at Ampati in South West Garo hills District on April 16. Brijio M Marak, whose right hand had broken, managed to escape from doctor’s chamber. Two 9 mm pistols, one 7.65 mm pistol, two country–made pistols and ammunition were recovered from them. Kokrajhar Police stated that around 26 Nepali boys received training at a camp in Myanmar through the Isak-Muivah faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM) and added that after returning they started working for the IK Songbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-IKS). Further, the Police stated that NDFB-IKS was outsourcing activities like kidnapping and extortion to these individuals and that they may have a hand in the abduction of four Bhutanese nationals on August 8. Senior militant of GNLA Savio Ch Marak claimed that, “A meeting was held in the school playground with the entire village present to try seven persons accused of extortion and another two suspected to be police informers in a fast track court. We had wanted to shoot them but decided against it following an appeal by the village elders”.
