According to Telegraph, the Guwahati city police have put several businessmen in the city under their scanner accusing them of contributing large amounts to the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). Police sources said the businessmen were paying the outfit via electronic money transfer facility. A senior police official said that "During police questioning, the businessmen admitted they had transferred money to towns such as Hissar in Haryana and Anand in Gujarat after the ULFA issued them instructions." The official also said the ULFA has stepped up their extortion drive in the city after the peace process between the Centre and the People’s Consultative Group began in 2005. The outfit has collected at least Rupees 30 lakh from the Dispur police division area alone. He further said, "The amount will be much higher if the figures of all the four police divisions are added up."

A revolver, a demand letter of Rupees 500,000 and a list of mobile numbers were recovered from the possession of the slain militants. According to police sources, one of the slain militants, who reportedly disguised himself as a rickshaw puller, was the main ‘finance collector’ of the outfit in the Hatta Golapati area.

According to Telegraph, suspected militants of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) abducted Abhisek Agarwal, the 25-year-old son of a biscuit factory-owner, in the Tinsukia district on March 28 after the businessman failed to meet a deadline for payment of extortion money.
