SFs recovered INR 2.2 million along with 28 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, 50 rounds of 9 mm, 4622 rounds of 5.56 mm, 6 rounds of 12 -Bore ammunition.

Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur (ZSUM) called an indefinite blockade along National Highway (NH)-37, from January 1 midnight, reports Times of India. ZSUM called the blockade in protest against the alleged ‘fake encounter’ of a Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) militant by Assam rifles (AR) troppers.ZSUM demanded that the government punish the guilty personnel under the Zeliangrong customary laws and removal of AR from the Noney area. AR in a statement said that on January 1 morning, around four ZUF militants opened fire at the forces and an encounter ensued, killing one cadre. The troops seized a .22 pistol with four bullets and 14 fired cases of AK-47 from the site. The slain cadre joined Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) in 2006 and obtained training at Buning Camp, it said, adding that he deserted the outfit in 2011 and joined the ZUF and was operating under ‘captain’ Abung of ZUF.

The Sangai Express reports that four militant suspects were reportedly killed in an encounter with troops of 39 Assam Rifles at Behiang area of Churachandpur District under Churachandpur Police Station on January 21. Press Information Bureau (PIB-Defence Wing), in a statement said that the four killed belonged to the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and Peoples Liberation Army (PLA). At about 3 am, the troops intercepted the armed men trying to infiltrate from across the border and a fierce gun fight ensued in which four militants were killed, said PIB. Based on reliable inputs about militants trying to infiltrate into India and carry out Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attacks on the Security Forces, troops of Red Shield Division launched an operation to in the border area of Churachandpur, said PIB. Two AK series rifles, two pistols and large quantity of arms and ammunition and other stores were recovered from the site, said PIB and added that from the documents recovered, it has been established that the plan was to disrupt Republic Day function at Imphal, Bishnupur and Churachandpur, claimed PIB.

Police source said an encounter took place between suspected NSCN-K militants and a combined team of 5 AR and 13 AR personnel at Tamenglong Ward No 3 around 11.30 am. The incident occurred when the AR team launched an operation while the NSCN-K militants were reportedly serving extortion notes in and around the area. Gonmei was killed on the spot while the others made an escape. Two .9mm pistols and an extortion note were recovered from the spot. Based on recovery of blood stains, Police suspected injury inflicted to at least one of the fleeing militants.

A Press Information Bureau (PIB) - Defence Wing press release said, the civil vehicle was searched and 100 kg of explosive (ammonium nitrate), three pistols with live ammunition and 1290 detonators were recovered. “The explosives would have killed hundreds of innocent Manipuris and Indians in various areas of India where this dangerous consignment was intended to be transported”, it said. Preliminary investigation revealed that this dangerous consignment started from Aizawl (Mizoram) and was heading for Thinghat (Churachandpur District) where it was to be handed over to some valley based insurgents groups. The suspected militants from whom the explosives were seized have been identified as H Vantal Biak and Thangzalunmang.

The Sangai Express reports on May 19 that Security Forces (SFs) recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition buried under ground in 2007 by a cadre of United People's Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) at the foothills of Thangjing ridge, said a Press Information Bureau-Defence Wing (PIB-DW) release that identified the cadre as ‘Captain’ Moirangthem Raja alias Chingkheinganba alias Meiba. Raja reportedly surrendered to SFs of the Division and helped in locating the cache which he buried in 2007 when the camps were shifted to Myanmar. The cache included four carbine machine guns, four magazines, two .22 mm revolvers, 42 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition and two rounds of .22 mm ammunition. Raja is said to have joined UPPK in 2001 and was actively involved in various anti-social activities in Manipur, Nagaland and Myanmar. On questioning, Nongmaithem Naocha disclosed that the Improvised Explosive Device (lED) attack which took place on May 15, 2013, at Wangjing Purana Heitupokpi against the regular foot patrol party of Border Security Force’s (BSF) 116th Battalion was carried out by him in association with Laishram Kiran Meitei and one Laishram Amuchou Singh. Nongmaithem further disclosed that one lED weighing about seven kilograms fitted with one RPG mortar shell was also planted by him and his associates at Wangjing Purana Heitupokpi area near the site of blast. Following this disclosure, one lED which was more than one square feet in dimension and one RPG Shell fitted together were recovered by the SFs. Nongmeithem also revealed that he joined the outfit in last part of April 2013 along with his associate Laishram Kiran Meitei, through one Sangcha alias Oja of PLA. After joining the PLA, he along with his associate went to Tamu in Myanmar and received training in lED and explosives in the early part of May 2013, he revealed.

Based on information about presence of a suspected underground camp along the Leimatak river, troops of the Division carried out large-scale combing operations resulting in recovery of a huge quantity of explosive materials which could have been used to cause large scale damage to civilians and security forces, informed a Press Information Bureau-Defence Wing (PIB-DW) release. Listing the recoveries as eight Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), 45 electronic detonators, 7 kilograms plastic explosives, 2 meters of safety fuse, 2 bundles of trip wire, four radio sets of Icom and Rizhonglong make with batteries, five Motorola antennas, one Binocular, a portable generator set (Corola) of 1.5 KVA, Self Loading Rifle magazines, 31 live cartridges of 9mm and large quantity of rations, the release said the camp was a well established setup catering for training and rest and recoup of insurgents which had more than 15 structures including living shelters, perimeter protection, cooking and sanitation facilities. The security Forces dismantled the camp and destroyed explosives and ration stores on completion of the operation.

A Press Information Bureau-Defence Wing (PIB-DW) statement while officially confirmed that the slain cadres belonged to the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K), added that after the gun fight, a search of the area was conducted and that a huge quantity of arms and ammunition were also recovered. Modarsim disclosed that he collected four IEDs from Khudei Khullen and brought them to his house about two months back under the command of his younger brother Angrung DS and Thoudam Jiten. The IEDs were meant for targeting non-locals in Pallel area as a part of CorCom’s attacks on non-locals, said Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Yairipok, K Meghachandra. About one back, three IEDs were taken away by his brother Angrung DS and they were exploded at Pallel on November 6. Apart from arresting Modarsim DS alias Naphal, Police have seized an IED weighing about four kilograms from the house of one Morungoham on the disclosure of Modarsim, informed the SDPO.

Five M-16 rifles were recovered from their possession. In another operation in the evening of December 3, three insurgents of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), identified as Ngangom Roshan (19), Abung Malemnganba (19) and Milan Gurung (19) were arrested from Asang Khulen area in Ukhrul District by 44th Assam Rifles battalion personnel, the Police said. Police commandos in another search operation in the same evening arrested two militants of KCP, identified as Sanjoy Khan (24) and Sajid Khan (25), from Lilong area in Thoubal District. "Extortion letters" were recovered from them, the Police said. In the fire fight, one armed cadre was possibly injured; however, he managed to escape under the cover of dense jungle. One of the masterminds of the Inter Factional Conflicts (IFC) between Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) and NSCN-Khaplang (NSCN-K), Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) combine during the last two years in Tamenglong District, identified as ‘2nd Lieutenant’ Timothy Kamei has been arrested by troops operating under Red Shield Division during a search operation in Lukhambi, Noney area in Tamenglong District on December 18. One 7.65 mm USA made automatic Pistol with magazine and large quantity of ammunition were recovered from his possession. Timothy joined the NSCN-IM in January 2005 and was involved in last few IFCs with NSCN-K and ZUF in the areas of Haochong, Ijerong and Haochongpung, he had also led the NSCN-IM cadres in the recent IFC on November 26 at Haochongpung where one cadre of ZUF was injured.
