Activists of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Samiul Haq (JUI-S) along with tribal leaders held a protest outside the Peshawar Press Club (PPC) on March 4 against increasing drone strikes in Waziristan of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) reports The Express Tribune. The protesters, led by Maulana Abdul Haq Haqqani, marched from the PPC, crossed the provincial assembly, and later convened at the Governor House. Addressing the gathering, JUI-S leader and former legislator, Ikramullah Shahid said that nine drone attacks occurred during Pervez Musharraf’s regime from 2002 to 2008, whereas 230 drone strikes have been carried out in Waziristan during the current Government’s tenure, killing more than 3,500 innocent people.“The rising number of drone strikes is a tactic of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s government to obtain more funds from America,” alleged Shahid. He maintained drones are a strict violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and should be shot down. Maulana Haqqani said that the undeclared war in Waziristan has not only affected lives of people, but has also affected their mental well-being as they continue to live under constant fear of attacks. He claimed there are no foreign fighters living in FATA.

A Policeman and three civilians were killed and 49 persons, including a woman additional district and sessions judge, were injured in a suicide attack in a judicial complex in Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on March 18, reports Dawn. “Two suicide bombers entered the complex and one of them blew himself up in the courtroom of Additional District and Sessions Judge Kalsoom Zaman while the second was gunned down by police,” Capital City Police Officer Imtiaz Altaf said. He said Police had challenged the bombers at the entrance of the complex, leading to an encounter. Three policemen, including an inspector, suffered injuries. “There were two attackers and both of them were killed,” he added. An official of the bomb disposal unit said that each of the suicide vests contained 8 to 10 kilogrammes of explosives and ball-bearings. The motive of the attack could not be ascertained, but Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan said it was in revenge “for the failure of the country’s judiciary to defend jailed Pakistani scientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui” in the US, reports Daily Times. Peshawar Additional Commissioner Habib Arif said the attackers were likely targeting the Peshawar High Court just on the back side of the judicial complex.

Prospective candidates of political parties in Hangu District have so far restricted their election meetings to hujras (private guesthouses), while some of them have been demanding that elections should be held under the supervision of Army in this volatile District due to threat of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) attacks. Local people say that the decision by Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat to take part in the elections has brought a positive change in the political environment, but the threat of terrorism remains as usual. It may be recalled that in 2008 elections, TTP had forcibly taken away ballot boxes full of votes from Kahi, Shana Wari and Zargari areas and attacked A Police Station in Ghlo Chenna, while terming the elections un-Islamic.

Two persons were killed and seven others were injured, among them an election candidate, in a bomb attack on a motorcade in the Janikhel area of Bannu District, reports Dawn. Adnan Wazir, a former member of the KP Assembly who is running as an independent candidate in the May 11 elections from the PK-72 constituency, was proceeding to the Wali Noor area along with supporters to address a rally when a remote-controlled explosive device ripped through his convoy comprising dozens of vehicles in Momiton Khel locality. Malik Mumtaz and Maqbool, the two elders, were killed on the spot. Adnan Wazir and six others, including a police constable, were injured in the attack. Mr Wazir won the 2008 general elections as an independent candidate but later he joined the Awami National Party (ANP). The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. Calling from an undisclosed location, TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told journalists that Mr Wazir was attacked because he was part of the ANP Government for five years. The TTP threatened more attacks against the ANP. “We are against ANP. We have directed our associates in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to target ANP election rallies and all its leaders,” Ehsan said.
