The Peshawar High Court was informed that the Federal Government had released PKR 500,000 for payment of compensation to an old woman, whose only son was allegedly picked up by intelligence agencies being killed and dumped by the Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway. Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Iqbal Mohmand told a bench comprising Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan and Justice Qaiser Rasheed that the Federal Finance Division had released the amount of compensation and the cheque would be issued by Accountant General Pakistan Revenue (AGPR) in the next few days. In the meantime, the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and its coalition partners backtracked on their statements to table a resolution in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly against the US drone strikes in tribal areas as the budget session was prorogued. PTI and its allies, including Jamaat-i-Islami, Qaumi Watan Party and Awami Jamhoori Ittehad Pakistan, had submitted a joint resolution against the drone attacks to the assembly secretariat before the start of the budget session. The resolution stated that drone strikes inside Pakistan territory were in violation of sovereignty of the country, international law and demanded of the Federal Government to take necessary measures to halt these attacks and those civilians were killed in those strikes.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Provincial Government on July 4 suggested that Afghan refugees should be equally distributed among four provinces, reports Dawn. Responding to the State and Frontier Region (Safron) Ministry’s draft policy recommendations for Afghan refugees beyond 2013, the Provincial Government has made two proposals for the ‘sustainable’ repatriation of 1.6 million registered Afghan refugees from Pakistan, an official source told Dawn. “In case, the Federal Government wants to continue with the ‘generosity’ of hosting Afghan refugees, then other provinces should equally share the burden. In collaboration with United Nations (UN) refugee agency, it should open new camps in Punjab and Sindh provinces before relocating registered refugees there. Also, that there should be a comprehensive repatriation plan and all Afghan refugees should be repatriated within a year. The relevant Deputy Commissioners should be assigned quarterly targets to ensure 100% repatriation within a stipulated period,” he said. The KP government also opposed extending Afghan refugees’ stay in the country and suggested that should the need arose, registered Afghans be equally distributed among four provinces instead of burdening one federating unit

KP Revenue Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur on July 31 declared the Dera Ismail Khan Jailbreak incident an act of cowardice on part of local police and said tough action would be taken against those responsible for the debacle. “Police officers and constables had hidden in sewer lines when militants attacked the Dera Ismail Khan central prison. Our head hangs in shame,” Ali Amin Gandapur told a news conference. He said militants succeeded in carrying out their task without resistance for more than 45 minutes due to cowardice on part of Police. Mr Gandapur said the main gate of the prison had been built by the British and it was not something that could have been blown up. “But the irony is that our own officials opened the gate to militants to welcome them. The entire force had disappeared instead of confronting militants,” he said.

The investigating authorities of Dera Ismail Khan jailbreak have concluded that the brazen assault was masterminded by Adnan Rasheed, the mastermind of an assassination attempt on Pervez Musharraf, who himself was freed in a jailbreak operation conducted on April 15, 2012, reports The News. The investigating authorities further believe that the prison attackers were led by Adnan Rasheed being the chief operational commander of a special unit of fidayeen (suicide attackers) belonging to the TTP and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU). Both the Waziristan-based jehadi groups have already joined hands to form the jehadi unit called “Ansar Al Aseer” (supporters of prisoners) whose prime aim is to secure freedom for the imprisoned jihadis by carrying out jailbreak operations across Pakistan. Further, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government on July 31 formed a high-level investigative committee to probe the Dera Ismail Khan Jailbreak, reports Dawn. The Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) media cell, which has circulated the government orders, said the committee, headed by senior member of Board of Revenue Waqar Ayub, will also comprise Special Secretary Home and Tribal Affairs Syed Alamgir Shah, Additional Inspector General (Special Branch) KP Syed Akhtar Ali Shah and the nominee of 11 Corps Headquarters Peshawar. Meanwhile, Dawn has obtained the list of 253 freed prisoners compiled by the jail authorities submitted to the Government. Earlier, different media sources speculated an estimated 250 prisoners escaped during the jail break.
