According to media reports, on February 1, the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) have started an aerial attack against a Maoist insurgents base in the Mahat Village Development Committee (VDC) of Rukum district. Security sources in Nepalganj added that the forces launched aerial incursion on a group of armed Maoists after they were seen going across a remote valley in the Mahat Village Development Committee. No casualties have been reported in the attack.

Addressing the inaugural function of the party’s seventh general convention in Janakpur on February 1, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist) (CPN -UML) Madhav Kumar Nepal demanded that the Maoists should clearly spell out the modalities of the proposed constituent assembly and round table conference. He welcomed the peace talks and said peace is what the people and the political parties had been wanting so far. He, however, maintained that the cease-fire that was called without consulting the political parties left ample room to doubt whether the Maoists and the palace were trying to single out other political forces in the country.

During a press meet on February 2, organised by the Maoists 'Bheri-Karnali Autonomous Province' (BKAP) at an unidentified location, member secretary Rishi Gautam said that their party [CPN(M)] has decided to release some of the abducted people found not guilty of spying against them, on February 13, marking the ninth anniversary of the beginning of the ‘People’s War’. The Maoists also said they would be starting Peoples' Education classes in grades 1 to 3 in dozens of government schools in model areas within the 'BKAP' from February 13. The insurgents further declared a public holiday on the 13th and declared the week starting from the anniversary, a ‘cultural week’.

Media reports of February 4 quoting Royal Nepal Army (RNA) sources said that at least 10 Maoist insurgents were killed by the security forces (SFs) during the past 48 hours in separate encounters across the country. Three Maoists were killed in Bajeri Danda area of Kailali district, two each in Sonigama area of Dhanusha district and Syamara area of Gorkha district and one in Birampur area of Rautahat district on February 3. Also, two Maoists were shot dead by security forces in Malu area of Dolakha district on February 4. During the operations, security forces have recovered bombs and explosives and also defused the bombs allegedly planted by insurgents in Manma area of Kalikot and Lalpur area of Sunsari district. Further reports said that 11 Maoist insurgents surrendered before the administration in different districts including four in Mishi Jhatkaiva Village Development Committee (VDC) in Dhanusha, two each in Baitadi, Taplejung and Mahottari and one in the Myagdi district.
