Maoist insurgents reportedly shot dead the Mayor of Pokhara town and Rashtriya Prajatantra Party leader, Harka Bahadur Gurung, in the Ratnachowk area on June 2. The Himalayan Times said that Maoist students' wing, the All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R), has claimed responsibility for the killing. The insurgents had been reportedly warning him to resign from the post since September 2003 after his appointment by the Thapa Government. His bodyguard and driver were wounded in the incident.

Reports from Udayapur district stated that more than 150 teachers were abducted by Maoists from different schools at Beltar, Basaha, Rampur, Thoksilsa and Chaudandi villages on July 5. Further, 12 ward chairmen of the Pokhara Sub-metropolitan City have collectively resigned from their posts on July 6 citing the reason of resignation of the Surya Bahadur Thapa Government. However, media reports suspect that continuous Maoist threats were the reason. The Pokhara Mayor, Harka Bahadur Gurung, was earlier shot dead by the insurgents on July 2.

On the same day in Bara district, security forces claimed to seized a cache of arms and ammunition, including 20 pipe and pot bombs, six pressure cooker bombs, four single-bore guns and 15 kg gun powder from Sipalkavre and Selang Village Development Committees (VDC). Further, the Maoists have detonated a powerful bomb at the office of Royal Chitwan National Park in Nawalparasi district. However, no casualties were reported in the incident.
