Maoist 'supreme leader' Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda has expressed "readiness of his party for negotiations at the presence and assistance of the United Nations." He also reiterated that the longstanding demands of the Maoists for a roundtable conference, an interim government and the election of a constituent assembly were still intact and those were the minimum pre-requisites for establishing people’s sovereignty. Also he indicted the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) for its participation in the Deuba Government and said that the Common Minimum Programme unveiled by the four-parties on June 30, ‘would not lead to any solution’. Earlier, the UN Resident Co-ordinator in Nepal, Matthew Kahane expressed the world body’s willingness to mediate the peace process, ‘if the government invites’ and said that UN would not interfere in the negotiations between the Government and Maoists. However, he clarified that a UN-based mediation exercise would not mean that the UN recognises the Maoists.
