Security forces (SFs) on January 1 killed a most wanted Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) cadre, Shaukat Ahmed Najjar alias Munna Janwari, along with one of his associates in a major gun-battle at Sopore in the Baramulla district, according to Daily Excelsior. Official sources said the troops used armoured vehicles and demolished the non-residential structure of Abdul Aziz Kanjwal in the densely populated Muslim Pir locality with improvised explosive devices. Even as one of the three LeT militants, Jan Mohammad alias Jana Kandru, managed to escape, both his associates were killed. After their bodies were recovered from the rubble, they were identified as Shaukat Ahmed Najjar alias Munna Janwari alias Salfi alias Tawheed and Ghulam Nabi Khuroo alias Lamboo alias Haji alias Shooter alias Suhail. The militant infrastructure across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) was intact which was evident from the recent infiltration bids in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, the Army said on January 12, according to Press Trust of India. "Despite confidence building measures between India and Pakistan, militants continue to get support from the other side of Line of Control. This has been proved by the recent infiltration bids in Uri," General Officer Commanding of the 15 Corps of the Army, Lt Gen A. S. Sekhon, told reporters at the Raising Day of the Corps in Srinagar. The Army commander said as per intelligence reports, terrorist infrastructure like training camps, launching pads and communication hubs were intact across the LoC. However, Sekhon said due to co-operation of the people, the army, in coordination with other security forces, has achieved many major successes against the militants. The graph of militancy-related violence in Kashmir valley had come down progressively over the past five years beginning from 2001, he stated. Militants triggered three hand grenade blasts within half an hour in the Srinagar city on January 13 evening, injuring five civilians and five security force (SF) personnel. In the first attack, militants fired a grenade at a SF picket at Shah Cinema Qamarwari. The grenade missed the target and landed on the road injuring five civilians. In another attack, which took place barely after ten minutes of the first one, two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured when militants hurled a grenade at them at Boulevard in the Dal Lake area. However, no loss of life or injuries was reported. The Mirwaiz, who was in Jammu at the time of the attack, said he would not be cowed down by such attempts, according to Indian Express. The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel foiled a major infiltration attempt of armed terrorists from the Pakistani side near Matkola border post in the Akhnoor sector. A BSF spokesperson said that at around 2.50 am, a night patrol of the BSF had noticed the movement of about eight to 10 armed intruders near the India-Pakistan border at some distance from Matkola post. On January 20, Doda district Police killed two top terrorists of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) in an encounter in Nali Dolu area under the jurisdiction of Gandoh Police Station. The United Jihad Council (UJC), a conglomerate of Pakistan-based terrorist groups, has rejected the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s call to give up armed struggle to pave way for a peaceful negotiated settlement of the Kashmir issue, Press Trust of India reported. Militant leaders have been shocked by the "baseless" and "uncalled" for statement of the Mirwaiz and his colleagues who are "ignorant of the background and realities of Kashmir issue," a spokesman for the UJC said in a statement issued from Muzaffarabad, capital of the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). "The statement of Mirwaiz may please some Western circles and Indian leaders, but it cannot change the ground realities," he said referring to Farooq’s comments that it was time to give up armed struggle to pave way for fruitful negotiations to reach a lasting settlement of the Kashmir issue. In Pakistan, the visiting All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq met several members of the United Jihad Council (UJC), an amalgam of various Pakistan-based terrorist groups, and sought their co-operation for the peace process between India and Pakistan, Press Trust of India reported. "There are many groups and leaders from the UJC who are supportive of the process. In the UJC, there are about 18 parties. People have been coming individually and meeting us. There are groups and leaders. They are quite keen that this process should move further," Farooq said. In the second attack by militants targeting the separatist All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) in three weeks, militants hurled a grenade on the headquarters of the group at Rajbagh in the capital Srinagar on January 31, according to Daily Excelsior. The grenade exploded in the compound, without causing any damage. None of the top Hurriyat leaders was present in the office when the grenade was hurled.
