According to The News, the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) personnel claimed on January 15 that two alleged teenage suicide bombers were killed while a third committed suicide by swallowing poisonous capsules in the Mohmand Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). An unnamed official stated that the three alleged young suicide bombers were on their way to Ghalanai, Mohmand Agency’s regional headquarters, in a Land Cruiser from the Pakistan-Afghanistan border areas. He said the FC soldiers deployed at the Khapakh Post on the Pakistan-Afghanistan highway - about six kilometers west of Ghalanai - stopped the vehicle and asked the three boys to disembark for a body search. According to him, one of the boys alighted and another remained inside while the third attempted to escape. The official said the soldiers immediately opened fire and shot him dead. He was identified as Nadir Khan, a resident of Swabi district in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). However, the alleged suicide bomber before his death exploded the vehicle through a remote control device, killing another 13-year old boy, who was inside the vehicle. The soldiers reportedly took the third suicide bomber into custody and brought him to Ghalanai. However, the boy, suspected to be from Waziristan, swallowed poisonous capsules and subsequently died.

At least 10 people were killed and 13 others sustained injuries when a teenaged suicide bomber blew himself up amidst a gathering of the Awami National Party (ANP) and tribal Lashkar (force) at Mirali in North Waziristan on February 11, The News reported. President of the North Waziristan chapter of the ANP, Haji Anwar Shah, was among the dead. Witnesses told The News from Mirali, the second biggest town after the regional headquarters Miramshah, that a suicide bomber blew himself up when the party workers reached Eedak village where armed men of the tribal Lashkar were manning a checkpoint set up on the main Bannu-Miramshah road to search vehicles carrying goods to Afghanistan. The attacker was reported to be travelling with the ANP activists from Tappi to Mirali where they had gone as part of their election campaign. The tribal Lashkar was recently raised by the Dawar tribes-people to evict foreign militants from their area, which according to them, provoked military operations by the Pakistani security forces and caused them multiple hardships.

Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police N.K. Ilangakone told Daily News that police confirmed the suicide blast. “A woman passing by was also admitted to the hospital after sustaining injuries in the incident,” said military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara. The TMVP spokesperson Asad Mawulana said the victims were canvassing for the party when they were attacked. A suicide bomber killed eight people, including the Pakistan Army’s surgeon general, in Rawalpindi on February 25 - the highest-ranking military official killed since the country joined the US-led war on terror, according to Daily Times. Lieutenant General Mushtaq Baig, surgeon general and Director-General of the army’s Medical Services, died after a teenage suicide bomber blew himself up next to a military convoy on a busy road in Rawalpindi, the army said. "The surgeon general, his driver and guard were martyred," military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told reporters. Five civilians were also killed, while 25 others were injured, an army statement added. "This was the first suicide attack in Pakistan in which a high-ranking military official has been killed since 9/11 and also the first attack after the election," AFP quoted Abbas as saying. According to eyewitnesses, Baig’s car had stopped at a traffic signal on Mall Road when the suicide bomber exploded himself — killing the general, two of his staff and five civilians standing in front of a nearby NADRA office.

According to AFP, nearly 1,000 people were attending the funeral. Reuters quoted the number as 500, adding that most of the casualties were policemen. District Police Officer Waqif Khan said the bomber was among the people taking part in the funeral, Dawn reported. Residents of Mingora said that the blast occurred when the funeral concluded and the people had started to disperse. "A huge and deafening explosion rocked the school building when a police party had begun presenting guard of honour to the deceased," said Haji Dost Mohammad. Deputy Superintendent of Police Javed Iqbal, who died in a bomb blast along with three other policemen in the troubled southern Lakki Marwat district on February 29-morning, belonged to Makan Bagh in Mingora city.

The suicide bomber, aged between 15 and 18, blew himself up as he approached Namdar at the madrassa in Takya. An eyewitness, Amin Khan, said the attacker struck after Namdar had finished a sermon and appealed for donations for jihad, AP reported. "Half of the [suicide] jacket did not explode; otherwise there would have been many casualties," Tariq Hayat, administrator of the Khyber tribal region, told Dawn. Namdar later said he was not opposed to suicide bombings targeting "Islam’s enemy", but was opposed to attacks on fellow Muslims. He also said the attack could be a "reaction" to his group’s action against people who attempted to abduct the Mahsud Scouts troops in Kambarkhel earlier in the week. "We expelled those people... and the same people could be involved in the attack," claimed Namdar. Munsif Ali Khan, a spokesman for the group, told Dawn that the bomber appeared to be from outside Khyber Agency. He blamed Hakimullah, an associate of Baitullah Mehsud, for the attack. Officials said Haji Namdar and is armed religious groups had links with the Taliban and was said to have fought along with the Taliban in the past.

The Danish Foreign minister said a Pakistani cleaner employed at the embassy and a Danish citizen of Pakistani origin had died and three other local employees were hurt, but the embassy’s four Danish staffers were unharmed. There was no claim of responsibility for the blast, but officials said it was likely linked to anger over blasphemous caricatures, which were recently reprinted by Danish newspapers. The explosion, which occurred at around 1.05pm, damaged the main gate of the embassy and the front of the building. It also left a six-foot deep crater in the road. Windows were also broken in the nearby home of the Indian High Commissioner. Anjum Masood, a manager for the UN-funded group Devolution Trust for Community Empowerment, said dozens of its 100 employees were wounded, mostly by flying glass. Inspector General of Police, Syed Asghar Raza Gardezi, said that it was a suicide attack. Police sources said the car bore a red number plate used only by diplomatic corps, saying this had allowed the vehicle to bypass the police picket set up near the embassy. Interior Secretary Kamal Shah told reporters that initial investigations had revealed the amount of explosives used was in excess of 15 kilograms.

40 people were killed and more than 100 others injured when serial blasts struck different parts of Ahmedabad, the Capital city of Gujarat on July 26-evening, reports The Hindu. Unconfirmed reports said the worst attack occurred near the trauma centre of the government civil hospital, where at least 25 people, including two doctors, were killed. Some eyewitness accounts claimed that it was a “human bomb” attack. The body was said to have been shattered but the incident was not confirmed by the Police, who put the casualties in the hospital attack at six. The police reports indicated that there were 17 blasts in 10 different areas and all, except the minority-dominated Sarkhej and Juhapura, were in the labour-dominated eastern parts of the old city. Most of the blasts occurred in crowded and congested points like traffic circles, near a Hanuman temple where a large number of devotees turn out on Saturdays or near bus stops. The first blast was reported from the Hatkeshwar locality in the Maninagar area at 6.38 pm (IST). Thereafter bombs went off at 7 other places - Bapunagar, Narol, Ishanpur, Saraspur, Sarangpur, Raipur, Sarkhej, Juhaapura - all within the next five to seven minutes. About 40 minutes after the first round of blasts, bombs went off near the trauma centre of the civil hospital and the main portico of the L.G. General Hospital in Maninagar, even as the injured were being rushed to the hospitals. About an hour later, three more blasts were reported from Maninagar and surrounding areas. The bombs were planted on old cycles apparently to avoid being identified. The preliminary reports from the sites indicated those gelatine rods in Tiffin boxes or in cloth bags with timers and tied to cycles were left behind in crowded areas, possibly minutes before the blasts. A couple of vegetable vendors, admitted to hospital with injuries, claimed to have seen a person leaving behind a cycle before the blast.

32 persons, including seven policemen, were killed and 55 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up near the emergency ward of the District Headquarters Hospital in Dera Ismail Khan on August 19, Dawn reported. The attack was carried out when a large number of people had gathered there to protest against the murder of the local Shia leader Basit Ali earlier in the day. Attacked by a gunman near the Faqirni Gate, he was brought to the hospital where he died. Police said the 20 year-old suicide bomber blew himself up in the presence of police personnel who were trying to control the crowd. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack. TTP spokesman Maulvi Omar told Dawn they had targeted police and other Government officials and "did not intend to attack any specific religious sect (the Shia)." He said suicide attacks would continue till the military operations in Bajaur and Swat were stopped. The explosion took place amid tension between the Sunni and Shia communities in the region that has spawned several targeted killings in recent weeks. "The motive behind the blast appeared to be sectarian and Shia protesters were the apparent target," said a police official.

Two suicide bombers blew themselves up on August 21 at the gates of the Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) in the high security cantonment town of Wah in Rawalpindi District of Punjab, killing at least 70 persons in what was described as the deadliest attack on a military installation in the country’s history, Dawn reported. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack. The POF at Wah is a cluster of about 20 industrial units producing artillery, tank and anti-aircraft ammunition for the Pakistani armed forces, according to Daily Times. It employs around 25,000 to 30,000 workers. The bombers blew themselves up outside two gates of the factory at 2.35pm (PST) when hundreds of workers were leaving after a shift change. Most of the victims were civilian workers. The first explosion occurred outside the main gate and it was followed by an equally powerful blast at gate No.1 located close to a busy market. Witnesses said the bombers were on foot and they exploded themselves within a minute of each other. The death toll could increase as 35 of the injured were in critical condition, hospital sources said. Security force personnel found a ‘suicide vest’ in the toilet of a nearby mosque and arrested a suspected suicide bomber, Hameedullah of Khyber Agency, from the Mall Road. According to sources, police arrested three suspects. One of them was said to be "covering up" the suicide bombers. A belt filled with explosives was also found in a mosque, the sources said. Taliban spokesman Maulvi Omar claimed responsibility of the suicide attacks saying that they had been carried out in retaliation for military operations in Bajaur and Swat. Ten army soldiers were killed and seven others injured in the fighting and three army vehicles were damaged. Several militant hideouts, including their command and control centre in Kabal, were destroyed. Major Nasir said the operation would continue till all objectives were achieved and the government’s writ was restored. However, the Taliban dismissed the military version, claiming in turn that they had killed 33 SF personnel. Spokesman Muslim Khan said that the Taliban had carried out the suicide attack in reaction to the killing of 14 militants in Doaba in the Hangu district on August 22. He said, “It is only a beginning and more attacks will come if the operation is not stopped in Swat.”

Local hospital chief, Chaudhry Ahsanul Haq, said that Niwani had suffered leg injuries. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Officials said the Niwani might have been targeted because he is Shia and lives in an area where there have been frequent sectarian attacks blamed on al Qaeda and Taliban-linked Sunni groups. Nawani has spoken out in parliament several times recently against growing sectarian violence between Sunnis and Shias. Bhakkar is in an area where sectarian tensions have run high. The attack is the third targeting a politician in the country in less than a week.
