Eyewitnesses said the two terrorists intruded into the IT office located in the Barbar Shah locality around 3.30 pm (IST) lobbing grenades and firing indiscriminately. They entered the building and opened fire at the personnel of the 27 battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) guarding it. The second terrorist is believed to be trapped in the complex till last reports came in. This is the first suicide attack of year 2005 in the State. The Al-Mansooran, suspected to be a front outfit of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Three police personnel, a woman employee of the Revenue Department and two terrorists were killed and four persons sustained injuries during a Fidayeen (suicide squad) attack at the Divisional Commissioner's office in the capital Srinagar on February 24. According to Daily Excelsior, the two terrorists forced their entry into the Revenue Complex while throwing a grenade and firing upon the guards, at 1500 hours. Three police personnel were killed in the initial round of firing and equal number sustained injuries. Both terrorists were shot dead in the subsequent gun-battle. Around 250 people, including the Srinagar Deputy Commissioner and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Kashmir Range), were in the building at the time of the attack. This was the second Fidayeen attack of the year in Kashmir valley. A spokesperson of the Al Badr told local news agencies over telephone that cadres of his outfit had carried out the Fidayeen attack. He reportedly identified them as Irfan Bhai and Sikandar Bhai, residents of Gujarat in Pakistan.

At least 25 people, including a suspected suicide bomber, were killed and approximately 100 others sustained injuries during a powerful explosion at the Bari Imam shrine located in vicinity of the diplomatic enclave in capital Islamabad on May 27. Dawn reported that casualty figures might rise as 12 of those wounded were said to be in critical condition in different hospitals of Islamabad. Approximately 8,000 to 10,000 devotees were reportedly attending the annual gathering of Shia sect when a bearded man of medium height and dark complexion walked up to the stage and blew himself up, said eye-witnesses. The Shia sect claims Bari Imam as their religious leader and holds a special Majlis-e-Aza (religious gathering) the day after the conclusion of the four-day annual Urs of Bari Imam.

Six people, including two of the three assailants, among them a suicide bomber, were killed and 19 persons sustained injuries in an explosion in the courtyard of a Shia mosque at Gulshan-e-Iqbal in Karachi on May 30-evening. Syed Akhtar Hussain, a witness, told Daily Times that the congregation had just commenced prayers when gunshots were heard in the courtyard followed by a large explosion. Police said three men approached the well-guarded mosque and one of them snatched the machinegun of a head constable. They shot him dead while the other police personnel killed one assailant and injured another. The mosque’s private guard, Fida Hussain, was also killed while two police personnel were wounded. The suicide bomber managed to run into the courtyard and blow himself up, killing one worshipper, the witness said, adding that the bomber’s head was decapitated and looked of African origin.

A few hours before the swearing in of Ghulam Nabi Azad as the tenth Chief Minister (CM) of Jammu and Kashmir on November 2, a Fidayeen (suicide squad) terrorist detonated a powerful car bomb in the Nowgam area of capital Srinagar near the old residence of outgoing CM, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, killing at least 10 people and injuring 18 others. A 10-year-old boy, a female pedestrian, three Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel, including a Sub Inspector, and the terrorist were among the ten persons killed in the suicide attack, responsibility for which was claimed by the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). A caller, who identified himself as Jaish spokesperson Abu Qadam, telephoned local media organisations in Srinagar and said Mohammad Mubashir, a resident of Abbaspora in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, was the Fidayeen who carried out the attack.

Two soldiers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and an equal number of civilians were killed while 17 persons, including a Japanese journalist, sustained injuries when terrorists carried out a Fidayeen (suicide squad) attack at the business hub of Lalchowk in the capital city of Srinagar on November 14. Both the terrorists involved in the grenade-and-firing attack were believed to have escaped from the incident site, which is a CRPF formation at the defunct Palladium Cinema. Police and CRPF personnel subsequently launched a joint operation to neutralise the terrorists and rescue civilians holed up at a number of hotels and restaurants. After six hours of the cordon-and-search operation, Inspector General of Police, Javed Makhdoomi, informed that Police managed to rescue as many as 70 civilians. According to him only four to six people were still holed up at Hotel New Peak View where one of the terrorists had been spotted after the shootout. A cadre belonging to the suicide squad of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) exploded a bomb killing two senior assistant judges, Shaheed Sohel Ahmed, senior assistant judge of Nalchhiti sub-district and Jagannath Pandey, senior assistant judge of the Sadar sub-district and wounding three people in the district headquarter of Jhalakathi on November 14. Police arrested the bomber, Iftekhar Hasan Al Mamun and seized an unexploded bomb strapped to one of his thighs along with 24 leaflets of the banned outfit. Daily Star reports that the judges were driving to the court by an official microbus from the government staff quarters and had stopped on the way to pick up another judge. The JMB cadre appeared on the scene and after attempting to hand over some leaflets to the judges, hurled a bag at the microbus, which exploded killing Judge Sohel Ahmed on the spot. Judge Pandey died on way to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital. Daily Star further reports that the arrested JMB cadre has confessed before a magistrate that he is a member of the JMB’s suicide squad.

In a Fidayeen (suicide squad) attack at Hawal in the outskirts of capital Srinagar on November 23, two terrorists and three security force (SF) personnel were killed while seven persons were wounded when the former stormed a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) company headquarters. Deputy Inspector General of the CRPF, S. R. Ojha said both the heavily-armed terrorists were killed 15 minutes after they launched a suicide attack on the company headquarters of the 96th battalion housed at the defunct Firdos Cinema Hall. In the exchange of fire, a nearby restaurant caught fire and was damaged. Two AK assault rifles were recovered from the slain terrorists whose identity is being ascertained, Ojha informed. No outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack thus far.

Nine people, including two lawyers and a police constable, were killed and 78 persons sustained injuries in two suicide bomb attacks by suspected Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) cadres in the Chittagong and Gazipur court premises on November 29. In the first incident, a JMB suicide cadre blew himself up near a police check-post at the entrance to the Chittagong court and in a similar incident, another suicide cadre detonated explosives in a crowd of lawyers and their clients at the Gazipur bar association building. The suicide bomber involved in the Gazipur incident was killed, while the one involved in the Chittagong incident, identified as Abul Bashar, was seriously injured. Two notes found with Bashar termed the attack a preliminary warning to the forces working to ensure security of judges and announced to continue the Jihad until 'an Islamic welfare state is established'.
