At least 40 persons were killed and an unspecified number of them wounded at Parachinar and other parts of the Kurram tribal agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on April 7 on the second day of sectarian clashes. Arbab Muhammad Arif, Secretary (Security) for the FATA, told The News that 40 persons were killed and 43 injured in the fighting in Kurram Agency. He said authorities have not kept any count of the number of Sunnis and Shias who have died in the clashes. However, he denied the suggestion that Pakistan Army’s helicopter gun-ships had caused most of the fatalities by firing at combatants from the air. Conceding that the clashes have spread out of the regional headquarters, Parachinar, to other parts of Kurram Agency, he said efforts were being made to control the situation through effective measures. Earlier, Kurram Agency's Political Agent, Sahibzada Anees, said the government could resort to the use of helicopter gun-ships to intercept and attack fighters in the outlying areas of Kurram Agency to prevent the escalation of fighting.

On January 27, 15 people including six police officials were killed and 60 others injured in a suicide attack targeting a Muharram procession near Qasim Ali Khan Mosque in the Dilgaran area of Qissa Khawani Bazaar in Peshawar, capital of Pakistan's North Western Frontier Province (NWFP). Peshawar police commissioner Mallik Muhammad Saad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), three other police personnel and a Nazim (local official) were among those killed in the blast. Superintendent of Peshawar Police Zaibullah said that an unidentified bomber detonated explosives strapped to his body when police stopped him from entering the procession, which was to be taken out from Qasim Ali Khan Mosque. A senior security official said the two severed legs of the suspected bomber had been recovered from the site. The blast also caused a power outage that left the city centre in darkness, complicating rescue efforts. NWFP law minister told Daily Times that the attack is “an act of terrorism” and there was no evidence to suggest that the incident was part of Shia-Sunni sectarian violence.

Major General Arshad Waheed, Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations, informed reporters that the cleanup operation was almost complete and that 73 bodies had been collected, and none of them were of women. He also said that another soldier was injured in overnight fighting, taking the casualty figures for the armed forces to 10 deaths and 33 wounded. Three more militants were also killed in the fighting overnight, the military spokesperson informed. However, he did not disclose the number of civilian casualties. Around 100 graves were being prepared in the Sector H-11 graveyard for the collective burial of militants killed in the Lal Masjid operation, Geo News reported. According to The Hindu, there is no clarity yet on whether those killed inside were all militants or if they included "civilians" who, the government said, were being held hostage by "a few hardcore militants." More than 500 dead bodies of female and male students have been recovered from the debris of the Lal Masjid in the second phase of Operation Sunrise, according to Frontier Post.

At least 12 people were killed and around 150 injured in a daylong shootout between Madrassa (seminary) students and security force personnel near the pro-Taliban Lal Masjid (red mosque) on July 3, according to Daily Times. The administration confirmed that a journalist, one soldier of the para-military Rangers, a businessman, seminary students and bystanders were among the dead. Unconfirmed reports suggested that the death toll had mounted to 16. Sporadic clashes continued till past midnight when unconfirmed reports suggested a massive security operation to clear the Lal Masjid of armed militants, according to Dawn. The shootout commenced at around 11am after students of the Jamia Hafsa and Jamia Fareedia, Madrassas affiliated to the Lal Masjid, marched towards the nearby Environment Ministry building and a security picket outside it. The students snatched weapons from police and took four officials hostage, according to the police. Rangers personnel fired teargas to repel them, and students stationed inside the mosque responded by opening fire, witnesses said. The students subsequently set fire to the ministry and Estate Office buildings in front of their seminaries. The encounter between the two sides reportedly continued the whole day. Students armed with AK-47s and wearing gas masks took up positions behind sandbags on the roof of the mosque and bunkers inside the mosque courtyard, chanting "Jihad, Jihad!" There are some 5,000 students at the seminaries affiliated to the Lal Masjid. Dawn reported that the Lal Masjid brigade was equipped with 3mm riffles, Kalashnikovs, 222 rifles, hand-grenades, petrol bombs, tear-gas shells and light weapons.

Security forces, assisted by helicopter gunships, killed 15 militants in an encounter near the Banda checkpoint in North Waziristan on July 31, according to Dawn. The clash reportedly occurred when two vehicles were seen moving towards a paramilitary post, some five kilometres south of the Miranshah town. Even as the troops fired warning shots from the Banda post, people in the vehicles fired back at the paramilitary forces and an encounter ensued. The troops later also utilised Cobra helicopters which targeted suspected locations of the militants in the area and the two vehicles. According to Daily Times, four Pakistan Army personnel, including a Major and a Lieutenant, were killed on July 6 in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack on a military convoy in the Dir district of North West Frontier Province (NWFP). "Four soldiers have been martyred in an IED explosion," said ISPR Director-General, Major General Waheed Arshad. He, however, denied that the attack was a reaction to the standoff with the Lal Masjid brigade in Islamabad. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. According to the locals, the outlawed Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi (TNSM) could be "behind the blast." Dir is a stronghold of the Jamaat-e-Islami and the outlawed TNSM. The attack is the second such in as many days and comes after cleric Fazlullah in Swat gave a call to his supporters for "jihad" on his illegal FM radio channel following the action against Lal Masjid. Agency reports added that Police said the suicide bomber, who was riding a bicycle, killed four security officials.

Nearly 50 people, including 35 foreign militants, have been killed in two days of fighting between the al Qaeda-linked militants and Pakistani tribesmen, Pakistani Government officials said on March 20, reported Reuters. Fighting broke out on March 19 in Shin Warsak village, 7-km west of Wana. "According to our reports 35 Uzbek militants and 12 tribal combatants have been killed," said a senior Government official, who declined to be identified. Among the dead were three children killed by a mortar bomb on their way home from school on March 19, a teacher said. "The children were getting off their school bus and some had started walking home when a mortar bomb hit," said the teacher, Noorzali, adding, some children were wounded. Military spokesman Major-General Waheed Arshad said the fighting was still going on and up to 35 people had been killed, at least half of them foreign militants and added that security forces were not involved. A battle between foreign militants, most of them Uzbeks, and ethnic Pashtun tribesmen erupted in the remote area near the Afghan border on March 6, when militants tried to kill a pro-Government tribal leader, in which seventeen people, most of them Uzbeks, were killed. It followed Government efforts to convince the tribesmen to help keep order and stop militant raids into Afghanistan. "It's a success of the government tribesmen strategy ... the tribesmen are fed up with them because they and their activities adversely affect their lives and business," Arshad said.

According to the deal signed between the government and militants in September 2006, the army has to take the peace committee into confidence before taking action in the area. This was the first coordinated operation in the area since the deal was brokered.

A suicide bombing in a crowd welcoming former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto killed 138 persons and injured approximately 550 others on October 18-night in Karachi, according to The News. Two explosions struck near a truck carrying Benazir, but she was not injured and was hurried to her house, police and officials of her party said. "The blasts hit two police vehicles which were escorting the truck carrying Ms Bhutto. The target was the truck," senior Karachi police official Azhar Farooqui told Reuters. Police officer Raja Umer Khitab said evidence at the incident site suggested it was a suicide bombing. He informed that the legs and head of the suicide bomber were found. "There were two blasts, one on the left side and one on the right side of the procession… It appears these were suicide attacks, but it is not confirmed," Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao said. "This was an act of terrorism targeting Benazir Bhutto and aimed at sabotaging the democratic process," Sherpao told AFP. "We suspect these were suicide bombings because any pre-planted or timed device would have been prevented by jammers attached to security vehicles," he added. The two explosions occurred a minute apart shortly after midnight near Karsaz bridge close to the vehicle Benazir Bhutto was traveling in, at the head of a procession of hundreds of thousands of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) supporters who had flooded the streets of Karachi to welcome their leader on her return from eight years in self-imposed exile, according to Daily Times. "Benazir Bhutto was immediately taken to her ancestral Bilawal House after the blast," Interior Ministry spokesperson Javed Cheema told AFP.

Militants on October 26 publicly executed four security force personnel in a village, 16-km west of Mingora, the headquarters of Swat district in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), and exchanged heavy gunfire with security forces in a nearby sub-district, according to Dawn. Masked militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles brought the four men to the village at around 5pm, fired a few shots in the air and later beheaded them. "Let this serves as a warning to all those who spy for the government or help the government. All sons of Bush will meet similar fate," a resident quoted one of the militants announcing shortly before the execution. People in Shakkardarra said that militants of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), who had set up check-posts on the main road and took positions on hills, seized the four men during the checking of vehicles. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the execution, but Maulana Naddar, a lieutenant of TNSM leader Maulana Fazlullah, said in a broadcast on an FM radio that the men had been executed to avenge the death of three militants killed early in the day.

Taliban militants attacked a military base near the Afghan border on September 13, leading to an encounter with the security forces in which at least 50 militants and two soldiers were killed, according to Dawn. Eight soldiers were wounded in the clashes. Military spokesperson Major General Waheed Arshad said security forces repelled repeated militant attacks. Army helicopters and ground fire destroyed four militant positions, he added. He said the army’s initial estimate was that at least 30 militants were killed, but added later that tribesmen informed officials that up to 50 militants had died in the military attack. He dismissed a claim by militants that they had killed over 100 soldiers in the region in the past two days as "totally false" and "baseless". As reported earlier, the security forces also killed around 40 militants on September 12.
