At least 16 persons including two children and one Frontier Corps (FC) personnel were killed and 30 others, including four FC personnel, sustained injuries after an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded at a vegetable market in Hazarganji vegetable market of Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, in the morning of April 12 (today), reports The Express Tribune. The target of the attack was Hazara Shias as the area belongs to them. Eight of those killed were members of the Hazara community. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Abdul Razzaq Cheema confirmed the death toll and said that the blast was targeting members of the Hazara community.

Police and Security Forces (SFs) personnel killed five Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants holed up in a house in E-sector of Phase-VII in Hayatabad area of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on April 16 after a fierce gun battle lasting over 17 hours, reports Dawn. One Police officer also killed during the gun battle. The TTP in an email message issued claimed that six of its members were involved in the gunfight with law enforcement personnel. The gun battle started at 7.30pm on April 15-evening as Police tried to enter the house in E-sector during an intelligence-based operation (IBO). Assistant Sub-Inspector Qamar Alam lost his life while trying to enter the house. A terrorist was also killed during an initial exchange of fire that triggered a fierce gunfight which continued till the killing of the four remaining terrorists around April 16-noon. Two SFs personnel and two civilians, including a woman, were injured during the gunfight. The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDUS) during the clearance found an explosives-rigged bike on the ground floor, which was connected with explosive materials planted in the basement of the house. The BDU destroyed the bike with an explosive charge, which brought down the two-storey house. “The house and bike were rigged with about 60kg explosives, which had been destroyed with a 250-gram explosive charge,” BDU chief Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Shafqat Malik said.

Four militants were killed during a search operation carried out by Security Forces (SFs) in Kulachi tehsil (revenue unit) of Dera Ismail Khan District Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on August 16, reports Daily Times. According to a statement issued by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), the operation was launched on a tip-off about the presence of militants in the forests near Bacha Abad and its suburbs in the Kulachi tehsil. SFs came under attack from various locations as they combed the forests for the militants. However, the SF personnel remained safe. At least four militants were killed in the counterattack. Two of them were identified as Javed Malana and Abdur Rehman Ustrana. They were wanted in eight different acts of terrorism, including attacks on the SFs and a Police mobile in Parova area.

According to security sources, militants with sophisticated weapons ambushed a security post of Panjgur Rifles 59th Wing at NA-85 China-Pakistan Corridor Highway, martyring four FC soldiers. “The security personnel were heading towards the mountains when the ambush took place. Terrorists started indiscriminate firing. The FC soldiers retaliated, but could not fight back,” the sources said, adding that the terrorists managed to escape and took their (soldiers) weapons and wireless sets along with them. Four Frontier Corps (FC) personnel were killed during an exchange of fire with militants trying to storm the residential and administration compound inside a FC training centre in Loralai District of Balochistan on January 1, reports Dawn. Four militants were killed in the clearance operation undertaken by FC personnel following the attack. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the FC personnel challenged the terrorists at the entry point of the "residential/administration compound of the training centre" and foiled their attempt to enter the facility. Having failed to enter the residential compound, the terrorists reportedly opened indiscriminate fire and entered a compound adjacent to the checkpost which was immediately cordoned off by FC. The exchange of fire at the checkpost left four FC personnel martyred and two others injured. The killed FC personnel were identified as Subedar Major Munawar, Havildar Iqbal Khan, Havildar Bilal and Sepoy Naqshab.

Quetta Deputy Inspector General of Police Abdul Razzaq Cheema said “At least three people, including prayer leader Hafiz AtaurRehman, have been martyred in the blast, while 28 worshipers have been injured”. The other two worshippers killed were identified as Shahbaz and Sultan. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Operations, Bahram Mandokhail confirmed that up to two to three kilogrammes of explosive material was used in the attack. “The prayer leader was the target of attack,” added the SSP. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

According to Police, unidentified militants had attached a remote-controlled explosive device with a motorbike and parked it near Muslim Commercial Bank at Taj Road area, which went off. As a result, JUI-F leader Maulana Hanif, Abdul Hadi, and Izat Ullah were killed on the spot and 12 others sustained injuries. The injured were identified as Haroon, Fazal, Asghar Khan, Arif, Haji Gull, Mateeullah, Ahmadullah, Mehboob, Daroo Khan, Ubaidullah, Sher Jan and Abdullah. Police said Maulana Hanif was the target of the attack. According to the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) officials, four to give kilograms of explosives were used for targeting the JUI-F leader.

A Policeman was killed and three others sustained injuries in a suicide attack on a Police vehicle in Loralai District of Balochistan on September 30, reports Dawn. One suspected militant blew himself up and another one was killed by Police during the exchange of fire. Station House Officer (SHO), Loralai, Abdul Rehman said personnel of the Police's Eagle Squad stopped two suspects riding a motorcycle near the Loralai commissioner's office. However, one of the militants blew himself up and the second was shot dead in retaliatory firing by Police. Three Policemen were injured during the exchange of fire, SHO Rehman added. Soon after the incident, Police and Frontier Corps (FC) personnel cordoned off the area.
