Six persons were killed and four others injured on August 5 when a group of six unidentified terrorists attacked a Christian missionary school in Jhika Gali, Murree. City Mayor Khurseed Abbassi said all six killed were Pakistanis. The terrorists escaped from the incident site. Approximately 150 students, children of foreign diplomats, aged six to 18 years were attending classes at the time of the attack. Russell Morton, Australian director of Murree Christian School, said the terrorists while escaping had also left a letter, which states that the attack was in retaliation to brutalities against Muslims all over the world. According to media reports, three terrorists, suspected to be involved in the August 5-terrorist attack at a school in Murree, reportedly blew themselves up with grenades in Khapadar in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), on August 6, after being intercepted by local residents and police. According to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Muzzafarababd, Tahir Qayyum, villagers of Khabader saw the three terrorists moving around in a suspicious condition and reportedly surrounded them. The villagers quoted the terrorists as saying that they had hand-grenades with them and that they had already accomplished an operation at the Murree Christian School. On being approached by local residents and police, the three terrorists reportedly fastened the grenades on their bodies and blew themselves up, the DIG said.

Three women and a terrorist were killed and 24 persons injured as terrorists attacked the John C. Heinrich Memorial chapel in the Mission Hospital at Taxila on August 9. According to media reports, it was unclear thus far whether the terrorist was shot by his accomplices or died from a shrapnel injury. The police have recovered a hand grenade from his body. The three women killed were staff nurses at the Mission Hospital. According to eyewitness accounts, there were approximately 200 hospital staff participating in the service when the terrorists attacked the chapel. The other two terrorists of the group managed to escape from the incident site. The hospital, which is supported by the Presbyterian Church USA and the Presbyterian Church of Pakistan, was founded in 1922 and treats mostly poor Muslim patients. Preliminary police reports indicated that the Taxila attack was linked to the August 5 terrorist attack on a Christian missionary school in Muree in which six persons were killed and four others injured. Police sources indicated that the Taxila assailants were linked to the Murree incident as the attacker who died was wearing clothing similar to that of the terrorists who carried out the Muree attack.

10 persons were killed and over 20 others injured as three unidentified terrorists opened fire on a group of approximately 40 persons offering prayers at the Shah Najaf Mosque in Khayaban-e-Sir Syed, Rawalpindi, on February 26. Media sources indicated that no group has thus far claimed responsibility for the suspected sectarian killing. No arrests have been made either in connection with the massacre. Meanwhile, while strongly condemning the massacre, President Pervez Musharraf has directed the Punjab and Federal governments to swiftly undertake a joint investigation and submit a report at the earliest. The President added that groups opposed to the government's policy of countering terrorism are "out to detract it from pursuing it vigorously…Those responsible would be unearthed and given exemplary punishment." Media reports have indicated that it was the first sectarian attack since the January 12-Presidential announcement of a crackdown on Islamist extremism and sectarianism. Separately, Interior Secretary Tasneem Noorani said the massacre was "a very reprehensible attack. This clearly appears to be a sectarian attack. It (sectarianism) has been curbed in the past, but to expect that everything will fall in line is expecting too much." Rawalpindi Range Deputy Inspector-General of Police Fareed Nawaz said the killing appeared to be sectarian motivated and was most probable that the killers had fled to neighbouring Islamabad.

Pakistani police said on February 28 that two outlawed Sunni sectarian groups were likely behind the February 26-massacre at a Shiite mosque in Rawalpindi. "We believe those detained have links with an outlawed terrorist group, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi," said Punjab police chief Malik Asif Hayat. He said most also had ties with the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi's (LeJ) parent organisation. As reported earlier, two armed men opened indiscriminate fire on Shiite worshippers at the mosque in the northern city of Rawalpindi, killing 11 persons and injuring 14 others. Asif Hayat indicated that LeJ terrorists who had returned from their safe havens in Afghanistan consequent to the fall of Taliban militia are likely to engage in terrorist activities in Pakistan.

Six terrorists were killed in an encounter near Bahawalpur, official sources said on July 28. The encounter ensued when four assailants attacked a police party escorting terrorists, numbering four, to Khairpur Tamewali from Bahawalpur to help recover weapons. The assailants intercepted the police and managed to set free the four terrorists from police custody. However, police chased the fleeing terrorists and clashed with them, killing two of the assailants and all the four who ran away from their custody. Two of the assailants managed to escape. The four terrorists who fled from custody are among the perpetrators of the St Dominic Church massacre in Bahawalpur on October 28, 2001. As reported earlier, a police personnel and 17 Christians, including five children, were killed and nine others injured when six unidentified gunmen opened indiscriminate fire at a church in Model Town, Bahawalpur.

The four Al Qaeda cadres of Chechen origin were coming from the tribal area of Miranshah, headquarters of North Waziristan Agency, near the Afghan border. According to official sources, the Al Qaeda cadres were probably on a terrorist mission in Kohat or Peshawar. SF personnel recovered four Kalashnikovs, one machine-gun, two pistols, 15 hand-grenades and a rocket launcher from the encounter site. The Al Qaeda men reportedly opened fire and lobbed five hand-grenades at the SFs from inside their vehicle. In a suspected incident of suicide bombing, approximately 12 persons, including five women, were killed and 51 others injured when a car containing explosives exploded outside the boundary wall of the US Consulate in Karachi on June 14. According to media reports, one of the three vehicles, which came from the direction of Clifton Bridge and were passing through Abdullah Haroon Road, exploded near the US Consulate building after crossing the Marriott Hotel. However, top police officials while denying that the attack was a suicide bombing said that the bomb exploded in a moving vehicle. According to these sources, a car, in which four women were seated, was passing through the road and the blast resulted in the death of all the four occupants. Separately, other official sources were quoted as saying that the bomb was concealed in the car driven by a lady and that some persons, who were probably following the car, blew up the explosive device through remote control when the car reached near the US Consulate. The identity of the alleged suicide bomber has not been ascertained thus far.

Ten Pakistan security force (SF) personnel and two Chechen cadres of the Al Qaeda terror network were killed in an encounter in South Waziristan Agency on June 26. According to media reports, SF personnel had raided Azam Warsak, a remote tribal area bordering Afghanistan, and arrested Al Qaeda terrorists hiding there. The operation followed reports that Al Qaeda terrorists had taken shelter in the house of Abdul Khaliq Sarkikhel Wazir, a resident of Kaza Paunga. In the ensuing encounter, 10 SF personnel and two terrorists were killed. Two other persons were injured during the encounter. Confirming the encounter, Assistant Political Agent Wana Anwar Ali Shah said "Our forces have lost 10 persons, five from the armed forces and five from the South Waziristan Scouts in the encounter last night." The other terrorists at the hideout managed to escape from the encounter site. Local residents indicated that there were approximately 35 of them in the hideout. This encounter is the first confirmation of the presence of Al Qaeda terrorists in tribal areas of Pakistan. Eyewitnesses were quoted as saying that four American officials had monitored the operation in Azam Warsak, approximately 14km from the Wana Camp. The raid was reportedly based on tip-offs from US intelligence agents that 40 to 50 Al Qaeda fugitives from the March 2002-Operation Anaconda offensive in eastern Afghanistan were hiding in two buildings. SFs arrested a Chechen terrorist, identified as Muhammad Yahya, who reportedly claimed to be an Afghan from the Kunduz province. They also seized an 81mm mortar gun, an Al-Qaeda uniform and literature from the hideout.
